  1. Thanks Sally. It was a very funny conversation.

I am moving back to Vermont over the next few days and signed up for phone and internet with the small Vermont company that handles my little town. I asked if they were collecting information and was told they do not! Now only my cell phone use will be recorded.

  2. Mia – I love your anecdote. I work primarily online and get asked multiple times a day, every day, if I’m “real”. I’ve always found this an odd quality of my work, specific to our time and place. I know there are many others like me, fielding the same existential question as a basic part of their job. I often wonder how the people working for American companies abroad feel when they’re asked.

It’s an odd thing, to carry out so many conversations that have value specifically *because* of my humanity, but are assumed to be “other than” just because they happen in a digital space.

I think some of the complacency about the monitoring lies (at least in part) in this lack of exposure to the very real human and physical resources required to power online life.

Anyway, I live for those human moments across continents!

  3. I just made a payment to AT&T for my cell phone and talked to a man
named “John McClane” in Asia. I said his name must not be his real
name and in fact was the name for the Bruce Willis character in the
Die Hard movies. He told me he was a big fan, he told me the call was
being recorded and we laughed over the fact that we are ALL being
recorded, and, that he has had nothing but rain in Asia as well, for
weeks. He also ended up sharing his real name. We have a major
company pretending their employees are American while calls are being
routed to Asia and people are working under aliases. And, he is
choosing the name of a Bruce Willis character from a Die Hard movie!!!
You can’t make up this stuff. He was very sweet. We are all living
    in the Twilight Zone.

  4. What a great oracle, Kitty, and totally appropriate for the moment. I pray that Mr. Snowden will be able to regain his identity again, his life and his future. This is something I would not wish upon another human being.

  5. After listening to this podcast, I went to the PW Oracle and asked about Edward Snowden, his release of documents to the Guardian, and the potential outcome(s). This is what it gave me:

    Aries – Weekly

Are you surprised things have worked out the way that they have? If you trace the thought process back to the origins of the situation, you’ll see that some tangible beliefs were involved, combined with a firm commitment, and that these are what have come true. Commitment plus belief: this is pretty much what makes the world go round. Those who lack commitment are usually on the losing side of whatever game they play; those who have some, even a little, are a lot more likely to get onto the winning side. But those who are at the greatest advantage are the people who can evaluate what they have done, and what they are doing, and make appropriate adjustments. That time has arrived, and finally it’s no longer an uphill struggle.
