I found this century-old farmhouse in eastern Vermont about three months after it burned. I spoke to the owner's father, who said that it was caused by fireplace sparks igniting the couch directly below the bedrooms of the two children. Mom, dad and the kids all made it out safely, but the home was burned beyond repair. A massive horse barn several feet from the house did not catch fire; there would likely not have been as happy of an ending to the story. Photo by Eric Francis.
