  1. As I said, I don’t think you meant to characterize the base soldiers as such –gun nuts. But I know some people who would easily extrapolate the comment of everyone on base having a gun into an over-generalized image “gun crazy” culture. You said nothing that implied the soldiers were gun nuts; only wanted to clarify the side arm access detail.

  2. I didn’t call the service people gun nuts, I was thinking about the people around me(I live in New Mexico) who have guns, in fact several of my friends (all ladies) have more than one and have concealed carry permits for them. None of the service people I know are gun nuts, in fact they’re respectful of weapons. I went to a shooting range with one of my Buddhist friends to learn about guns and learn how to shoot them, for sport, or target practice. Going in, I thought I might want to get one once I learned about them. After several hours of learning about how to use them, how they work, etc, I decided I did not want to get one. But my Buddhist friend, who had thought it was all very barbaric to begin with, wanted “a little glock for the house for protection”. It’s insidious. I dont’ know if she got one, I really haven’t wanted to ask.

  3. Hazel– I understand and agree with you that guns are no adequate answer to pain or anger or injustice. I don’t think anyone here would disagree with that. However, I don’t want to run too far in the other direction and characterize all our servicemen and women as gun nuts simply because they serve as an armed force. (Yes, there are gun nuts in the service, but I imagine there are as many civilians with guns on the brains, too.) I don’t think you meant to characterize them this way, but I was concerned about working with an accurate picture of fire arms use on military bases. Moreover, many many serviceman/women would agree with you that violence does not eliminate violence; it’s a paradox I’ve heard many of them admit.

  4. What upset me is that it seems that taking up a gun became a solution to fear or pain or horror or injustice. It’s an option, sure. Solution? Nope. Maybe since the man lived he can say why he did what he did and why he thought it would work, or if he thought it would work.

  5. Mystes– had forgotten about the Killeen Luby’s killings. Looked it up for another Saturn/Pluto connection, but it falls outside the ’92-’95 window. But the Luby massacre is often connected with the San Ysidro McDonald’s killings in ’84. That did occur during a Saturn/Pluto conjunction –when Saturn last passed through Libra.

  6. Shanna, you are absolutely right about side arms on an army base. They are generally not issued or permitted. But you need to remember that this is Texas, where carrying or handling arms is considered a Gawd-given right. A right that pervades and warps all kinds of other cultural overlays.

Just as the right to execute murderers is a peculiarly Texan legacy. Hence the need to resuscitate this poor guy so he can stand trial and die by the hand of Authority.

And the base is abutting Killeen. I tell you, the epicenter of the violence is in the town, not the base.

  7. Actually, very few people on an Army base are walking around with side arms. MPs, for instance, always carry them while on duty because *they’re the base police force*. It’s important to remember that a CIVILIAN police officer was one of the first called in to respond to the crime scene, a sure clue that no one in the vicinity had a gun to fight back.

Yeah, these people handle guns –sometimes everyday– but they don’t carry them around like salad forks. Guns are locked up until they’re needed for training, etc. And don’t forget the thousands of people serving who are non-combatants desk jockeys, support, medical personnel, etc. These folks rarely handle weapons.

  8. I noticed that you put blood in the water of the “Waves” at the top of the page. It’s sad that it’s true, there’s blood in the water. The way we as a country have been behaving it’s no wonder that a man who listened to his patients talking about all of this destruction of fellow humans brought the destruction home. The gun nuts say that if everybody has a gun there will be no crime, so what about a military base where pretty much everybody has a gun?????
