One more from that bookcase

Random collection of old books in the special collections reading room, SUNY Albany archives, May 2010. These are kind of a gestalt presentation, not assembled because they're relevant together, but more for decoration. The main thing these books have in common is that they don't have call numbers slathered on the spine. After briefly discussing the news ethics of this decision, we moved several books from the left side of the shelf so that the Magna Carta would not be obscured by glass. The polarizing filter just wasn't doin' it. Thanks Geoff for a fun afternoon in the truly obscure part of the library, where all the good stuff is. Photo by Eric Francis.

  1. P.S. The snooker table was still standing there except it was hidden and unusable under a gazillion books!

  2. LOLZ Beth — your comment and that beautiful display of books above made me think of my dear uncle who was a bibliomaniac. He used to take his car out to book fairs around Ireland and return with the vehicle completely STUFFED with books, much to the scolding of his wife never to bring another book into the house!

I took a friend to see his awesome house one time and wanted to show him the snooker room (it was a huge house) which I had frequented as a child on summer visits. Damn if the room didn’t resemble a maze with books floor to ceiling every which way and not a snooker table in sight! When he had to downsize and sell his house due to my Aunt’s illness he bought two houses — one for both of them and one for his collection of books!!!

Thank you Eric and Geoff AND Beth!

  3. Hot diggity dog! “All the good stuff” This photo encompasses a girls wet dream. I love books, I love old books — perhaps a rock on that shelf. Sacred text, almost better than therapy Thursday’s. Thank you Eric, Thank you Geoff!
