Mystery to Light – The Scorpio Full Moon

By Len Wallick

…all of the laws of man working in nature and history and evolution say for all human beings to come always closer and closer together.”
Woody Guthrie

The Scorpio Moon exacts its opposition to the Taurus Sun tomorrow morning (7:09 AM EDT). That’s a Full Moon and it is neither “super” nor ordinary in any way, shape or form. It symbolizes a unique and special opportunity to examine and overcome the darkness that keeps people apart. It is also the gateway to a rare and powerful series of eclipses that will bracket the Cancer solstice.

Daily Astrology & Adventure by Eric Francis

Taurus and the implied second house represent the integration of life with matter, both in the animated body and what that body identifies as its own. This principle has been gradually accumulating momentum while a lengthy, complex and powerful collection of planets in Aries held energetic focus.

First and fittingly it was the Sun that left the cardinal fire of Aries and its theme of initiative for the grounding of the fixed earth of Taurus just over three weeks ago. Then the New Moon — a conjunction of the luminaries — at the Beltane mid-point between seasons got the current lunation rolling. Now as that lunar cycle is reaching its peak, the personal planets Mercury, Venus and Mars have joined with the Sun in the sign where self-awareness ascends to self-possession.

Scorpio and the associated eighth house is where personal resources are shared with others. The consequences of that sharing have generated social conventions that govern the exchange. Those conventions often involve confidences and financial responsibilities. Family, community and government have an avid interest in the transfers and transformations attending issues like sex, death and taxes. Paradoxically, those collective processes inhibit individual examination of the inevitable — death. That acquired inhibition, in turn, often keeps us separate and alone in the dark about what we need to know and understand in order to live whole and be free. That separation has, of course, been exploited by those who seek power and control.

The Full Moon in Scorpio symbolizes a light brought to those dark places. The question is whether we are willing to look. In the case of this particular opposition, the opportunity for illuminating the social shadows is magnified, having been preceded by an extended opportunity of self-discovery afforded by the Aries stellium. Because these particular shadows are a collective phenomenon, however, we will be required to build on self-awareness and go beyond.

We will need to seek, find and forge connections with those who wish to share mutual empowerment and support our growth. We are also being called upon to recognize and dissolve bonds with selfish power structures that would exploit our attachment to conditioned ignorance. But before we can act on the ties we have with others we must attend to what is within ourselves.

For just as surely as Luna’s full face is illuminated by the Sun, the ability to look into our common sources of isolation is lit from within. It begins with the hard feelings that we have become attached to through past associations with other people. Bitterness, resentment and lack of trust say a lot more about what’s on the inside than anything on the outside, in the now.

Whether carried forward from another time or another person, conscious and aware possession of our shadow material is what protects us from being possessed by it. While accepting the darkness within is integral to accepting ourselves, that does not mean we should cleave to it. Rather, we are best advised to recognize and then let go of these behavior patterns. If enough of us can do that, the light of our highest and best selves will be given room to take over and become our conscious identity. In doing so we can serve as an example. We can encourage others to let their guard down in turn so that we can truly say that the enemy within has been transformed into the friends we have been seeking. That will prepare us for the next phase of our journey when we will soon be called upon to join hands and bravely take a leap to promise when the luminaries next conjoin.

  1. burning river, i had the same reaction to the nodes comment, but didn’t take the time to ask…

  2. be aren’t moon’s nodes always on opposite degrees? Help me follow your thought. loved what you were saying.

  3. Check out how the moon is hitting the nodes just prior to full: working shadows with the north, and playing a little off kilter with the south. Plus, it swipes Jupiter, on a 150 just before its hit with the Sun, cool yod. Very trippy moon, I’ll have to sit with this one.

  4. last night i woke up to the (almost full) moon shining on me and my pillow. this is not a normal thing and only happens when the moon is in that perfect place. in my half awake state i thought of the various ancient stone structures created to capture that one beam of sunlight on the equinox or solstice. and now your article has also pinpointed much for me, as usual. with libra sun almost to scorpio and in the 8th house, i have an affinity for that strange and complicated darkness you speak of so eloquently. looking forward to this evening’s meeting with the full moon. thanks so much len.

  5. “conscious and aware possession of our shadow material is what protects us from being possessed by it. “–Len W.

Freedom from possession by darkness, freedom from fear. So many fears. So much freedom! How I loved ALL posts today that enriched your considerations, Len.To be spending extra, concentrated time at this moon phase here–at the loosening points–becoming more and more conscious of what is dark, what can be let go of–to have that control because of the willingness to be conscious–how good to share this rarefied atmosphere with the PW family. I have been using something called the Sedona Method to do just that these past couple of days. Amazing how easy it is, if one wants to do it. Sunshine, smiles and hugs, dear hearts.

Thank you. Once again your erudition and wisdom takes a Daily Astrology post to a broader and deeper meaning. The node knows!

  7. ps, for me the statement wasn’t about religion vs science but rather a statement about being here Now and having no Fear but rather, Peace.

  8. interesting that this should pop up on my desktop today from a man who certainly has peered through many a gateway:

“Guardian writer Ian Sample asked Hawking if he feared death in a story published yesterday. This was his response:
I have lived with the prospect of an early death for the last 49 years. I’m not afraid of death, but I’m in no hurry to die. I have so much I want to do first. I regard the brain as a computer which will stop working when its components fail. There is no heaven or afterlife for broken down computers; that is a fairy story for people afraid of the dark.”

  9. Len,

Whenever the Moon’s nodes park on a set of opposite degrees, as they are right now, I know it’s gonna be an extended and (usually) forced observance of some issue for me. I’m thinking though, after reading (a 2nd time) your offering today and then reading the Sabian symbols for them, that maybe the nodes are encouraging and enabling us to follow your wise suggestions.

You say “. .those collective processes inhibit individual examination of the inevitable death. That acquired inhibition, in turn, often keeps us separate and alone in the dark about what we need to know and understand in order to live whole and be free.” Listen to what the south node symbol is. . Children Skating Over A Frozen Village Pond; Keynote: The use of inhibiting circumstances for the development of character and a transcendent approach to the environment.

Both the ice and the pond itself inhibit. Dane Rudhyer says ..”it is through the mind that man can transcend the entropy of the universal process of existence. We see here indeed man’s TRIUMPH OVER ENTROPY.”

When your wrote that “Taurus and the implied 2nd house represent the integration of life with matter, both in the animated body and what that body identifies as its own”, I found the north node symbol in Sagittarius to be supportive of that as well as your words “It (Full Moon) is also the ‘gateway’ to a rare and powerful series of eclipses that will bracket the Cancer solstice.” The symbol pictures “A Bluebird Perched On The Gate Of A Cottage”, and the keynote: “The reward which meets every effort at integration into a social environment for those who remain true to their own selves.”

I peeked through that gateway and saw the solstice itself, noting that the personal planets Mercury and Venus, who right now are joined together and sextiling Neptune, will have important messages of their own. Mercury will square Saturn and trine the Moon, seemingly to favor the people over the establishment. Venus will be giving us a preview of her 2012 conjunction to the Sun, and of course, the nodes will be in the same degrees they are in today.

So my attitude toward this enforced observance/examination of the darkness that keeps people apart is not something I will fear. In fact, just the opposite it seems. Since fear is a big component of the separation itself, knowing we are being aided by the Universe with extra time to learn why we fear and how to overcome it is comforting. We are all one and we can overcome.

  10. You are indeed an angel holding your light high, guiding my path should I be willing to let go just a tad of my human fears; be aware and trusting enough to follow.

    Thank you, Len.

  11. love Woodie Guthrie. yep.
beautiful writing again, Len. actually quite a beautiful day all around! all these Neptunian sextiles working their magic and, yes, looking forward to the upcoming Flower Full Moon, which coordinates with the Wesak festival that has been going on (3d.prior, 3d post).

great time to be meditating or pondering, thanking the cosmos tomorrow morning, as in some traditions the Buddha’s rays are said to be ‘streaming down’ to humanity during this Full Moon time.. I’m thinking that those bowls or cups of water some of us put out to capture the full moonlight every month will be xtra nourishing and special with this influence. (even my dog’s water bowl, the hamster cage and my fish tank will go outside for this one).

something to think about anyway, if it interests you.

    peace Everyone, enjoy the day!
even if it’s raining where you are, I can feel all hearts are Sunny today!!
    yeah!

  12. This is amazing Len. It exactly describes the process I am going through, and went through yesterday with my husband. Your words completely affirm that we are on the right path in shining the light on our patterns. It feels so much better to be facing things and looking them over, rather than sidestepping them to keep the status quo. It is ground that has been covered before, but it feels as if we are getting to the deep root causes of things, finally. I suppose that is the Scorpio element…? I am looking forward to seeing how this plays out with other people as well. Thank you for your words, they have brightened up this rainy day!

  13. I just watched Endeavour take off then read this amazing post and now I’m floating as high as a kite with love and vision — I think I’ll stay up there to watch as the moon grows fuller!

Brilliant, Len. Words cannot adequately express my gratitude for this one.
