We’re living in a world being colored and shaped by the Jupiter-Chiron conjunction, which is still three arc minutes from exact at the time of this writing Monday morning New York time. As mentioned, this is a once-per-generation conjunction; and also a gem. Jupiter and Chiron both are elements associated with Sagittarius: the sign of the far away and the exotic. This conjunction happened in last Cancer in June 1990, just as Chiron was entering perihelion phase for a few years — coming closest to the Sun, and therefore its fastest average daily motion. Because Chiron was moving so fast for most of this side of its orbit, it’s taken Jupiter 19 years to catch up (and correcting a prior statement), there was indeed an exact conjunction on May 23, 2009, very close to today’s; and a second pass on July 22. Today’s is the final pass for this cycle; the next conjunction takes place in 2023, as Pluto is getting ready to exit Capricorn.
When you think in longish cycles, it’s easier to remember that a conjunction like this defines an era, not a few days, or a single year. There is also a contact between Jupiter and Neptune involved, in about two weeks; and finally Chiron and Neptune, exact Feb. 17. For those contemplating this triple cluster of planets, that last one is the ‘big one’ because it’s been building for so long, as Chiron and Neptune have crept across Aquarius for quite a long time.
Simultaneously today, there is a Mercury-Pluto conjunction — the cosmos is serving up a little extra fireworks, with a conjunction between a very near planet and a very far one. (I am sure your daily horoscope from astroservice-dot-whatever will be all full of Plutonian good cheer, you don’t need to take it too seriously. Mercury describes a state of mind, which is a state of awareness.)
This is an interesting mix of light and dark, as Mercury-Pluto in Capricorn would presumably be a bit obsessive and oriented on themes of power. Yet that aspect may be playing bass in the planetary symphony today. Aspects are one thing when they happen on their own, and another entirely when they happen in the context of something else. From the standpoint of our perceptions, contrast is useful. The universe may be all love, but on Earth we need light and shadow in order to see.
The Sun is still aligned with the Great Attractor, and now for the next 12 days will be moving into, and through, an alignment with the Galactic Core. These two very different points are both in mid-Sagittarius, and the Sun aligns with them every year at this time of year. When it does so, it’s as if the Sun becomes part of them, concentrating and amplifying their energy. I am sure that by later today I will have some new calculus on this sequence of events, though for now, I’ve just got the basic news; let’s see what turns up in the comments area.
The Great Attractor is too new and too subtle for most people to identify, but not too unusual to feel. For those curious about these points, I have some extra reading if you want. Now, let’s consider a news item that arrives with all of this: the Copenhagen climate conference. The activity in Capricorn describes corporations and governments and that in Sagittarius describes another potential. Sagg is ruled by the Earth in one system of astrology. It’s like we’re being offered two ways to get this message — as a death threat, as an evolutionary impulse, or as a statement of potential: perhaps all three.

I’m just old and just young enough to appreciate and to have experienced some of those you speak, Dizzy G. and Ella F. too in concert in NYC and several of those writers and other musicians I was lucky to catch on the tail end as one of those not-really-a-baby-booomer kids who, growing up, wanted nothing more than to stand on the corner of Bleecker and McDougal and feel the vibes. Which I did, although the vibes were a quickly fading memory, the spirit was alive. “Jack K’d” across the country myself just to make up the difference. Ah, memories! astroderm – of all the dates you cite, in only one case was Chiron in the mix with Jupiter and Neptune – 1945. Not only was it the end of WW 2 and the beginning of Nuclear Damocles. In NYC alone, Charlie Parker and Dizzie Gilllespie were creating a whole new universe of the mind (that most of us are still catching up to) while Jack Kerouac and William Burroughs were among the best minds of that generation, flirting with the edge most chose to deny (and who’s to say what strategy is best in the long run?).

The Mercury-Pluto conjunction is interesting because (unlike many of the other aspects and transits) the orbit of influence is comparatively short (and will not be revisited during the upcoming Mercury Retrograde). So much meaning, so little time. Invitation and imperative – like a car pulling up to the curb and someone you know asking you to get in. As for as the climate conference, does Mercury-Pluto sound like stolen e-mails to you? Then, wham-bam Mercury is squaring Saturn and out of town before anyone has a chance to count the sliverware.
But it’s the Jupiter-Chiron conjunction that (as Eric put it) brought the color and shape. It may be exact for the last time today, but it’s been a long time developing and it fruit will be feeding us for a long time. For example, the first stem cell lines were just approved by the current presedential administration, breaking a needless logjam over a decade old.
Neptune has quite an act to follow.

I’m gonna stream-o-conciousness it here,.. Lately I’ve been realizing that reality is not about ME in any capacity, it’s about OTHERS. I can slip in and out of this shit day after day, and it still doesn’t matter, BUT, I’m still HERE. I’m realizing that I’m a function, a point of reference within the continuum, “someone” who activates according to self-awakened-need-in-society. As well, I’m seriously starting to give-a-fuck about “anyone” else. (It kinda freaks me out, I’m scared of attachment.) (..and my Love needs some evolution.)

Thanks for the links back to the Galactic Core and Great Attractor material. Although I enjoyed re-reading the material, I realized how much more I enjoy your writing now. The evolution and improvement in the depth of your analyses is worth celebrating. It’s a joy to watch a writer developing a true individual voice.
June 1990 was the beginning of one of the happiest 12 months of my life. ‘Think I’ll get another span like that? That would be a true gift.
I would like to point out that the last time I did a review of Jupiter Neptune conjunctions, I discovered that these aspects seem to correspond with mostly significant political and ideological turning points in our nation’s history. Some are easier to spot than others.
2009: Obama, rise of teabaggers (authoritarian conservatism), health care reform
1997: welfare reform, Clinton re-election
1984: Reagan’s “morning in America”
1971: anti-war activism peaks
1958: John Birch society founded, Baby Boom brith-rates begin to decline
1945: End of WWII
1932: FDR elected
1920: Prohibition begins, Congress refuses to ratify treaty of Versailles, women gain right to vote
So here am I, looking again to better position “how astrology works” by way of personal experience. And as always anticipate that other’s posts coupled with Eric’s writing will teach.
Sunday received email from relative to whom I’m not close (but who appears to consider me close – I think that’s a contrast in emotional terms versus genetic).
This relative had set up “accounts” for all relatives considered worthy (or necessary) to participate in a (commercially promoted and not individualized) ‘family’ website.
The email was the first I had heard of this, and it seems to me that if I were planning on setting up an internet account for someone else that exposes them to the general public that I would first ask if it were “OK” with them? (Like, I wouldn’t make an account for a friend on FaceBook without asking?!)
I responded with polite but firm “no negotiation possible” email requesting my removal. I chose not to burden the situation by trying to understand the ins and outs of the project; I left it “black and white” for the time being rather than engage in what would most likely be a series of email mis-understandings.
And so this feels like a self proclaimed authority figure taking leave to do what they like – wit all good intentions on their part -, and me, the individual, while complementing the authority figure on the positive nature of the project, still being very sure in my individual need to not participate on their terms and furthermore to be able to speak up and say “leave me out” with certainty, clarity of my own purpose etc.
I’m thinking this is yet another instance of what some of our current astrology is suggesting -? There are other facets to the analysis of the situation to be sure, but as always trying to keep this post simple.
I’m looking forward to everyone’s reponses to Eric’s essay as I think these points will continue to come to light.
