Closing in on the Virgo New Moon

Friends, readers — greetings from my kitchen, where I haven’t been in a few weeks.

Today the Virgo Sun moves into exact alignment with the Saturn-Uranus opposition. Saturn-Uranus is a longstanding aspect; it’s part of an approximately 35-year cycle, and once the aspect forms it lasts for about two years. Recall that it was exact first on Election Day 2008. When the Sun and Moon align with a slow-moving aspect, as they are about to do with the Virgo New Moon, this can enhance the effects of the alignment or make them become obvious. Until then it can reside in the background as an influence we don’t always notice, or whose effects are spread so far and wide they just seem like the “normal” background.

The Virgo New Moon conjunct Saturn is exact at 2:44 pm EDT on Friday, Sept. 18. Mercury will also be in Virgo for this affair, and the planets involved all align with the lunar nodes by trine/sextile. The nodes in this case can act as a resonance device, giving anything that occurs greater influence with the public.

Notice, for example, the ongoing, long and extremely boring standoff between the Obama administration and so-called conservatives over healthcare; and various splits among the Democrats as well. Again in presidential politics, notice the school districts that refused to air a speech by the president directed at school children, as if it would be an option under any other president who is not black and who is not being accused of socialist leanings because he thinks the government has some responsibility to take care of people. Notice how many people know how shockingly little about what any of this means, and are spouting off slogans such as “spread the wealth around.”

Last year in the run-up to the election, we talked a lot about the tension between the progressive and regressive forces that this opposition aspect represents. Saturn and Uranus often manifest as radically different energies, with Uranus representing progress and Saturn representing the status quo. The whole mess seems intractable. Nobody wants to budge; the progressive cause, the one that says that every American should have the freedom to get medical care, needs to persist — and with that energy coming from Uranus in Pisces, you can be sure that it is indeed persisting and making progress.

A strong factor in Pisces will often have an invisible influence, until that influence becomes obvious. We may get a glimpse of that this weekend and next week, as the energy ripples out from Friday’s New Moon in Virgo.

We will get another taste when Saturn shifts from Virgo to Libra on Oct. 29 and makes its first square to Pluto in mid-November. Then, with two strong forces in cardinal signs, sitting on the Aries Point, we will get a feeling for what is really going on behind this conversation; but we’re a little ahead of ourselves.

At the moment, what we’re about to experience is the full effect of Saturn-Uranus across two mutable signs, which is a probable source of all the mental tension we’re feeling at the moment: not just the healthcare standoff, but the mystery over whether the banks will stand up to the economic crisis. Many believe we have not seen the end of this, and some 80 banks have failed so far this year. Here is a list that will inspire you to keep your money invested in macaroni and canned fish. This gets personal; you can watch this TV and suspect that it’s all a heap of lies, until one day you observe how concerned you really are.

Has anybody noticed how morbid the domestic news has been this year? We’re not quite talking the summer of ’69, with the Manson clan being uncovered, but still — I keep seeing images of a lot of cops digging in backyards.

I have a theory about that, which is that it involves suppressing awareness of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. We are not dealing with this, but below the surface it has our nation deeply divided. I don’t think anyone knows what to do or what to say. We all know it’s among the many fleurs de mal of Dick Cheney and the Neocons, and presumably too much for us to handle as individuals. What we haven’t figured out, as they finally did in the Sixties after a while, is that it feels good, is healthy and is productive to express our anger and concern about a global issue.

Saturn-Uranus is still a work in progress. There are two more exact oppositions: one on April 26, 2010 in Virgo-Pisces and finally July 26, 2010 in Aries-Libra, making an exact T-square with Pluto. That aspect, by the way, is a full serving of 2012 astrology — what we are leading up to is precisely the cardinal t-square of these three planets. At the moment, we are gradually experiencing this come into focus.

  1. 5145dj,

It IS fun to think about isn’t it? Glad you are feeling better now. Enjoyed reading your thoughts about the Uranus/Saturn face-off as it relates to healthcare reform. Made me think about how a chicken has lost his head but keeps running around in circles. Sad but so gruesome to watch. The government takes so long to accept, to change and to get on board when new realizations take over a population, such as the way equality between black and white, men and women, and now rich and poor. Uranus has all the consciousness we need, but swimming with the fishes, as you say, it’s all out of order and unclear to the average on-looker.

The rabbit will be plucked out of the water in due time. Maybe even the March 2010 time you mentioned as the 3/15/10 New Moon would be a spectacular time for Uranus. Maybe in May, the anniversary of the Taurus conjunction of Saturn and Jupiter in 2000; there is a New Moon within a degree of that historic aspect and Uranus and Jupiter close by and within the last five degrees of Pisces.

Jupiter will also oppose Saturn later that month, marking the half-way point of the conjunction they made in 2000. That moment would also be near the end of the 7 + months that Mars has been in Leo, stirring up all the baby boomers’ Plutos, and, what with Uranus entering Aries by the end of the month, followed by Jupiter in June, the sh… will hit the fan when they square Pluto if it hasn’t passed. Well, I guess it’s gonna hit the fan anyway, but maybe for something else! Let’s see if it works.

  2. Hi, just a couple more quick bits of thought as a post script to that last entry…

–about how it’s not just Uranus heading up the group, but Uranus intuitively heading up the group of all of us, and how intuition can offer startling insights and brilliant flashes all along the emotional spectrum

–how both sides offer mirages of the other; even me asking so many questions with detail and flourish in my first entry a la Saturn in Virgo

–how when we learn about a woman who doesn’t have ovaries, but does have internal testes (which frankly seems like the same thing with a different name since both are balls, which may or may not come in pairs, with powerful, core-of-life stuff inside), that we’re learning about her because it’s time we all know. This being, human, is not cookie-cutter, it’s not predictable and it’s not repressible.

    I know-i know… duh? and wow.

My biggest apologies if this sounds preach-y; I’m just really awed by it (the greater scene) (and it’s so fun to think about!).

  3. Dear bkoehler (and EF),

Hello, thank you for such thorough and helpful replies! I’m sorry this reply is so late; bk I got to the computer Thursday just long enough to read your response and EF’s new post, and then promptly got pummeled with the flu Friday morning. (Not THE flu, or maybe it was, who knows–it was just one of those brief but flattening ones… handfuls of elderberry ended that. Nevertheless, I know it’s way late to be replying to this thread now. So much has happened since last week already! But, I wanted to anyway.)

First off, THANK YOU BOTH! I don’t know why my brain wasn’t grasping the Uranus in Pisces piece. It just wasn’t, but when I read both of your posts UinP was so comprehensible. The fishes don’t need to be talking; they’re busy doing their own thing and that’s also part of why the “no don’t change” side has to make a bigger fuss and splash. Fish don’t (seem to) even pay attention unless your swatting/swishing/making a ruckus right at them. And there are so many fish right now, all living with and negotiating the current “health care” nets (sometimes called safety, sometimes called red tape).

Forgive me if all of this has been covered in subsequent articles; I’m not caught up in the least bit, but I can’t wait to be. That photo, “Dawn over the UN” is gorgeous!!

“An interesting health care debate would include a discussion about how complimentary care prevents disease for a fraction the cost of “curing” it; it would include something about nutrition and its role in health; it would include a conversation about how we might reduce some of the stress we are under, not just so we might live better (naughty, in a puritanical society) but how we might reduce the stress on the health care system that comes from how we abuse our bodies and our minds.”

    I could not agree more.

“Why is mainstream healthcare all so expensive? What are the real options to $700 prescriptions?”

    A gluten-free diet. (I write this in 100% seriousness.)

No one I know who uses complimentary care as their primary care would forgo it for antibiotics, or untested vaccines, or (and the list goes on and on). Yes-yes, there is a need for modern medicine, and I am thankful for it, but, when I think about it, if I had to pick just one planet to see me through and face off with Saturn (poor Saturn, not bad at all, just stuck with that side of the conversation this time) et al, it would be Uranus; so I get it: we all are currently (tee hee) under the most creative, least fearless care (protection? tutelage?) the Universe can provide.

Thanks for helping me connect the dots in the Sky and on Earth!

  4. jlo – Thanks for the info. So we got Lachesis who decides when to cut off life, Sappho the poet and of “kindred spirits” fame, and you have a handle on Logos. Here’s what Phil Sedgwick said was negative about Logos: “use of data and numbers to defeat valid arguments”! Otherwise,we can think of it as logic; pragmatic and scientific thought.

Phil says about Makemake: articulate and ultra communictive. Quick to report findings. On the negative side: cunning and verbally manipulative. Double talk. Diversion of facts.

Wikipedia says of Typhon: a deadly monster of Greek mythology, rejected by all. . . He was thought to cause volcanic eruptions, hot dangerous wind storms, earthquakes and tsunamis!

I also learned that Apophis is Greek for the ancient Egyptian Apep, an evil demon, the diefication of darkness and chaos, thus the opponent of light. A real snake! He was sometimes able to swallow Ra, “the bringer of light”, during the day and cause solar eclipses. So the legend goes.

And these are the guys, along with Pallas, Mercury, Sun and Moon that are traveling with Saturn, who is opposed to his father Uranus. Quite an entourage. I think I’ve seen and or heard some evidence of their presence during the healthcare reform debacle, er debate.

  5. Be, I’ve got delineations for sappho and lachesis, courtesy of treehouse mountain. Lachesis: “intervention, assessment mid-way into a sequence, what “interrupts” an evolving sequence from going as one would have expected (from the way it began or is underway.)” Sappho: Friendship; bonding; feeling close to or the same as others; kindred spirits; having things in common; artistic interests; shops/galleries. Sappho as “pairs” assumes another importance in medical astrology.
Logos, I’ve always intuited, it’s on my saturn in the first, “the word”, this is where I need to focus, where logos stands, I need a sharp eye and a steady brain to grasp that one.
Sorry I can’t add more. I’m a little external of the details these days. My brain is fuzzy and I’m regrounding.

    Peace,

    Jere

  6. . . .and does it have anything to do with Cheney’s achin’ back? Also, since the Galactic Core/Center is squaring all these bodies (see below) and Uranus, any chance it could be conducive to some raising of the (human) body of consciousness or group consciousness if you will?

  7. Would you just look at what’s happening right now! (per serenna.com/astrology/ephemeris.phm)

    Sun 25 Virgo 50
    Moon 23 Virgo 56
    Mercury 29 Virgo 55 rx
    Saturn 25 Virgo 6
    Makemake 25 Virgo 18
    Typhon 21 Virgo 25
    Logos 22 Virgo 45
    Pallas 23 Virgo 1
    Sappho 29 Virgo 45
    Lachesis 27 10
    Apophes 27 Virgo 46

5145dj said it doesn’t seem equal, and that was when it was only Sun, Mercury, Moon against Uranus. Now I’m thinking maybe it’s BECAUSE of the New Moon/Saturn opposed Uranus.

Eric, or anyone who’s familiar with these “bodies” please add some understanding to the meaning of this picture. I’m familiar of course with Pallas Athena, and know a little of birdman Makemake’s meaning, and the lady Lachesis can stop progress and get a new direction for a project, but what about these guys: Apophes, Sappho, Logos, Typhon . . .what are they up to? Seems to me that Saturn has “corporaled” the guard for a showdown with the Uranus “out of this world” forces.

  8. Morgana:

Having visited the South (New Orleans and Winston-Salem, NC) I can believe it. There is a powerful and mostly awful history accompanying the place–so much karma collected. Perhaps we can all do with sending a little light that way to move people out of the mangrove swamp of the past. Just a thought.

  9. Morgana S.,

I found your comments fascinating and praise and thank you for telling us your story. You know, I’ve never thought of it that way, or heard it said . .that the south is haunted. Well, why not? Do whatever you can do to bring your people to the more conscious view of humanity that you now have, and I will do the same here! Bless you.

  10. Fe, reading Carter’s words to the press yesterday took me back to the year 2000. At the time, I was a conservative Christian Republican, suddenly grappling with a strange idea: that then-presidential candidate John McCain had supposedly fathered a child with a black prostitute, and that he and his wife were now (at the time) raising that child.

It was a lie, of course. Bridget McCain is Bangladeshi, and not McCain’s biological child at all.

To me, the “horror” some people felt at McCain supposedly sleeping with a black prostitute and putting the “evidence” on display ended up being beside the point fr me. The point was the idea that this lie, so easily verifiable, was told by “my” people. I started asking questions. Who started this rumor, and what did they hope to accomplish by spreading this around? I got the answers to those questions. Those answers precipitated a fundamental shift in my worldview.

I’ve lived in the South since I was 14. I’m 46 now. I believe Carter’s statement, that’s causing such an uproar, is factually correct. Racism is behind all of “it.”

Hopefully some of “the crazy” that’s going around now is helping some of our other fellow citizens have the same sort of epiphanies I’ve had.

I’m a practicing witch and shamanist now, so I try to understand all this with an eye to Spirit. I’ve come to the conclusion that the South is haunted. Many of its native people are in serious need of an exorcism. I did my own.

  11. 5145dj,

Good questions; I’m on my way to check on that Saturn, Uranus trine, but until Eric comes back to you with more detail I will refresh everyone’s memory about how Aries is the beginning and Pisces is the ending. I would say that Uranus is in the disolving business (behaving a lot like Neptune) and until we climb out of the water there won’t be what we all want; forward, direct, to the point motion/action/talk. But as Eric says, we are persisting and making progress, and I take that that to mean that the old ideas and the entrenched attitudes, in this case about how we deal with our sick people, need to be worn down….dissolved. Water can do that, but it does take a while. Already though, we grow tired of the fighting and our defenses weaken. Pisces, ever elusive and Uranus ever surprising will not announce their plan. You won’t see it coming, but it will make you gasp; it will be revolutionary, and I’m betting it will be good for the soul of this country.

On March 15 there will be a New Moon at 25 Pisces 10 and joined by Mercury. They will join Uranus at 26+ Pisces. The Sabian Symbols are:

26 Pisces – Watching the very thin Moon Crescent appearing at Sunset, different poeple realize that the time has come to go ahead with their different projects. (Keynote: A keen appreciation of the value of individualized responses to any challenge of life.) This is a very interesting read, but a piece of it is “The Fallacy of Totalitarianism”

27 Pisces – The Harvest Moon Illumines a Clear Autumnal Sky (Keynote: The light of fulfillment that blesses work well done. Rudhyer says “….the time has come to reap what we have not only sown, but also cultivated – or failed to cultivate”

A lot can happen in six months.

  12. Hi, as always love and appreciate the articles published here, but could someone discuss and clarify the following a bit? “…with that energy coming from Uranus in Pisces, you can be sure that it is indeed persisting and making progress.” Since Pisces is a dual sign, with those very-quiet fishes (who aren’t making their case en masse verbally or otherwise to the press–maybe the details of the goal are still murky) swimming in opposite directions, that action does not seem persistant or particularly focused (to me–don’t the splits in the dem party also reflect these differing piscean directions?). I totally see the symbolism of Saturn in Virgo in action: the conservative/status quo group are quite eye-catching and popping up everywhere (like a breathtaking harvest of this summer’s discontent), making a bold, undeniable, and yet also somewhat ambiguous, “NO” statement. (Check out the blog entry titled “For Or Against, Just Get Your Facts Right” at http://www.npr.org/blogs/tellmemore/ where the incongruity is succintly documented.) I understand that Uranus is progress, but under the care of the fishes how can one be sure of what will come of the journey, or where that (unpredictable, no?) Innovator is going?

It does seem “normal” that the debate surrounding this topic is playing out this way; many people do not know what the specific goal of the Obama administration is [it’s not health care, just mandatory, but also affordable (another reflection of Saturn v Uranus) health care insurance]. With the Moon and Mercury joining Saturn who’s already hanging out with the Sun, against Uranus, the teams do not seem equal. Of course if anyone can pull the rabbit out of the hat, Uranus in Pisces can, right? All that conservative emotion, chatter, obstinance and grandstanding is hard to ignore though.

    ***
Perhaps, the health care insurance tax credit will the beam of light (north node in Cap as of the moment) that both sides agree to and pass come March 2010.

    {Is it ok to think out loud here? Thank you for listening.}

Maybe my real question is how long will it take for Saturn and Uranus to reach their next trine? I feel like I’m ready for the evolution of this conservative v liberal static noise into something constructive (or am I? goodness knows it’s nice to be able to have the freedom and leisure to do nothing but bicker with your siblings, and dig in the dirt if that’s your thing and since it’s Virgo-time, without much in the way of outside worries or pressures at home).

Thank you in advance for any wisdom you may have; I love-love-love how much I learn thanks to PlanetWaves. Happy Rosh Hashanah!

  13. Something else I wanted to mention that just adds to the interest of times we are witnessing. Pandora (the asteroid, not the commenter PandorasWood!) is about 20 degrees of Aquarius, right in between Jupiter on one side and Chiron/Neptune on the other side.

Would somebody tell her to put a lid on her darn box of troublemakers?

  14. Frankly I think the rabble rousers are more like cornered animals with no avenue of escape. These folks didn’t just get this way. They come from a long lineage of parts of our society that have been encouraged by 8 years of Bush to think there is a chance their way of thinking and living can prevail. It is sort of sad to witness the death throes of an era.

At this time when Uranus is in Pisces and the “crazies” and the “dreamers” are influenced by the combination of unexpected, irrational, and radical energy in a state of intangible, unclear, idealistic thinking and feeling. The healthcare reform “debate” is a perfect vehicle to express pent up emotion. When Uranus leaves the formless, spiritual sign of Pisces and is reborn into Aries it will be expressed in quite a different way.

Fe’s description of a cancerous boil is a perfect way to picture the scenes we are witnessing. The boil has to be lanced and drained before it can heal. Pluto is bringing the toxins to the surface; Uranus and Saturn are “expressing the toxins” and both sides of the debate can be seen as radical or reluctant depending on your view.

Once the two planets have moved into the cardinal signs next in line the energy will take on a new form and that’s when the real action will take place. We all have a ring-side seat.

  15. Eric:

Add to this conversation President Jimmy Carter’s observation yesterday on national media about the racism inherent in the continued and escalating invective against President Obama, including Rep. Joe WIlson’s “You lie!” comment during the President’s speech last week.

The reaction across the board is rippling. Some journalists are welcoming it as a means to lance the ugly cancerous boil that seethes underneath here in the US. Whatever it is, we’re coming face-to-face with the old unanswered, unresolved dreck that has held us back and down from evolving as a culture and society. Some folks want to prevent this by tearing the country apart using race-baiting and violence as the triggers.

No wonder Obama read so much about Lincoln before he took office.

  16. I’m with you Vic and Be, thank you both for your insights. I like the perspective you offer Be, it helps round things out.

  17. just a few comments and questions:

BKoehler-Great point about all the Cancer water energy….Yes, I too welcome some relief from all the watery emotions that have been surrounding everything this summer. Having a Pisces Moon, I am very used to being in touch with my feelings, but feeling everyone elses’ feelings this summer has me wanting some people out there to ‘tone it down’ and get a grip, and I’ve also seen a rise in violence and acts of hate in Maui where I’ve been for the past few months. It’s scary to see up close. I am used to being a westside of LA resident and quite sheltered from Conservative/Old School people. I am very concerned about what is happening, and quite annoyed with the stupidity so plentiful in our Nation, but have tried to express and release my anger/frustration, express and release, express and release…mostly it feels like a few months of dodging bullets-many from people who just aren’t ready to move forward, who are stuck in the old paradigm…..

Unfortunately the side of the team I’m rooting for (Uranus in Pisces and the Progressive Movement) is all too often afraid to express themselves in any type of negatively perceived way. Eric’s point about wondering when/where the anger is now compared to the 60s made me wonder: “Is there a role reversal going on now….the progressives are the ones who are calm and ‘toned down’ and the Conservatives are ‘raging in the streets’?” We know what happened when the 60s Radical energy petered out….the Neocon movement was born and they took over. Does this mean as they kick and scream their way through this birthing process of a new paradigm, that we should plan on it being time to move ahead (visualize, intend, and assume it is happening). I want to see Uranus get tough and plow through this rough terrain towards Unity and Peace, which includes dismantling old systems that just don’t want to budge and building new ones. Anyone with me?

  18. On the other hand, I found the long standoff over healthcare quite stimulating; emotionally and intellectually. It gave me the needed time to hear (read) all the heated arguments against (fears mostly) and then the defenses (just as heated!) for the various components/issues in the healthcare debate. There has been a lot of feeling expressed in net articles and the blogosphere, although not so much at PlanetWaves, about the repercussions that might or might not happen if this or that were to become law. It has been a wonderful astrology lesson to boot!

I say this because, starting with the summer solstice still in effect, we had the Cancer Sun/Moon opposed by Pluto and joined by Vesta. Vesta has kept the personal and political core fires burning while Pluto exposed the repressed feelings/fears of many U.S. citizens. This followed by a solar eclipse in Cancer and two eclipsed full moons, including among this the two new moons in Cancer. There’s been a lot of feeling let loose since late June. The madness abounds, yes, on tv we have seen the crazies demonstrating, on talk shows and even in the senate/house chambers.

But it has been a learning experience, and now the exhaustion sets in from all the emotions expressed. I welcome the earthy stability of the Virgo New Moon and the support and structure of Saturn to bring us back to some semblance of sanity.
