After a hard week…….reflexing and re-focussing the human condition……..in order to pay the rent….I got home 3 hours ago…..and after a few Plutonic/Chironic moments…… managed to reach the computer….and sat down to read Judith Gayle’s “Fear of Flying”
As one who read the original Erica Jong work 30 years ago……and in conjunction with Erics’ assertion that there was no sexual revolution per se in the 1960s…….I would like to add an observation.
The 1960s was simply the time that desire finally overrode the negation of behaviour through fear….with regard to sexual activity. There was definitely no qualitative choice about partners or relationships. Simply put, the marketing strategy finally became the winner in the battle with moral/religious teaching that sex was for marriage only. The “pill” was available…and hey we need to sell a few million….so lets all get laid!!
This in itself was not a bad thing…we did at least check out the Wilhelm Reichian idea that repression is the root of anger and violence. A few million tons of marijuana later….I think we can all agree that he was right! But this was no qualitative approach to our fellow men and women. It was an Aries Point macrocosm of the teenager who decides to get laid many times….in order to feel confident about seducing the love of his/her life ….who has yet to appear!!
And so to Fear……!!
Judith’s work is one of the most accomplished pieces of prose that I have ever read. Yes….Psychology is “my bag”……and I would argue that…….in Shakespearian terms….the other side of love…is despair……!!! Fear….and Hate are singular emotions that “eat the Soul”…..as Fassbinder’s film beautifully illustrates….!!
But those of us who are old enough…..still “with the program”….and with a vision of life in the 21st. century….need to recognise that we cannot have freedom without resposibility. The choices have to be made. We are capable of charging up our batteries….so that we can love…in the face of madness…….poor governance…… poverty……and lies.

Now where have I heard that before….?
For me….it was a no brainer in the 1960s……I let my emotions rage…to every Rock song that filled the space…….and Jazz has a fairly large repetoire too……..!! Until eventually…the voice of Intuition began to knock on the door of my Personality….. saying “Hey Man….move over….gimmee a go….!!”
And in that moment…my Soul began to take the Wheel….I have been listening …..ever since…..!!
