Ancient glacial waterfall

Created by glaciation during the last ice age, this waterfall was part of the runoff system for water melting from glacial ice. Soon after, lots of naked tripping hippies hung out there for a while. Now it's pretty quiet. It's in Ulster County, NY, which incredibly is considered a suburb of New York City. Photo by Eric.

  1. I just only discovered this grotto last week, and I have been to this land many times over the past 5 years. Not sure if its my love for grottos or not, but this little spot is sweet. And I had the greatest time ever climbing to its “roof” and soaking in its architecture. That tree to the left may have fallen over or have been pushed — at some point in time, but it’s still very much alive with all this amazing stuff growing/living with it. Plus, when your on this “roof” that I speak of, there’s this cool light leak where you can pop your head in and say hello to your friends. It rained that day, and on the topic of the smell of water….. Almost nothing makes me happier then the scent of streptomyces. Thanks for the photo! I can smell it too…

  2. I can smell this photo! I’m the lady with the cisterns in New mexico that I’ve been cleaning out for a while. They got clean, swept and last week the man came from the East Mountains (near Albuquerque) and filled both of the cisterns with water (because I don’t have the rain catchment part set up yet). I had forgotten the beautiful smell of water pouring! This photo smells great!
