Terminal, Not Terminal — Scorpio Solar Eclipse

Temperature at the airport is 88 degrees, which is stupid, man, ’cause i don’t know anybody who lives at the airport.
— George Carlin as Al Sleet, the Hippie Dippy Weatherman

Think of the Scorpio solar eclipse at 7:50 am EST Sunday as a tropical air, train, ferry or bus terminal, and you will have it aced. First, it will be more than one thing, with many things happening at once. Also, it’s not where anybody resides, but it is where hot weather is rightfully monitored. It’s to be a place of arrivals, departures, connections, loss and findings, where time itself often changes. Most of all, Sunday’s solar eclipse will not be an end so much as a transition.

Astrology by Len Wallick

The most obvious transition for many will be the change from Daylight Savings to Standard time just hours before the hybrid (part total, part not) solar eclipse. The annual “fall back” feels like a loss for many, which fits.

One of the correlations that gives eclipses an undeservedly bad name is their association with loss. It does not have to be a bad thing. You can actually participate with an intent to lose what you are better off without, such as bad habits. Another way to go with the flow is to practice releasing attachment to things lost which truly feel like a loss. Such a practice will help you set healthy and useful pattern.

All eclipses correspond with pattern setting, but this one has it in spades. That’s because Scorpio, the location of Sunday’s solar eclipse, is a fixed sign (as are Aquarius, Taurus and Leo). It also has to do with Saturn’s proximity to the New Moon conjunction of the luminaries (Sun and Moon) and lunar North Node that will constitute the eclipse.

Saturn, among its other attributes, expresses as the proverbial setting of patterns in stone. Scorpio (where Saturn has been sailing since Oct. 5, 2012) is where the Sun symbolically fixes in place the season initiated with the Libra equinox. That is how all the participants of the Scorpio solar eclipse combine to indicate that you should prioritize being aware of what you are doing.

You should be aware so that any patterns in your perceptions, behavior, practice and intent are undertaken consciously and carefully. Make sure you know what you are doing, and where you want to go, because you will have to live with the consequences. The patterns you are setting now really are like making an air, train, ferry or bus connection. If you board the wrong conveyance this weekend, it will be a long time gone, a long road traveled, and a lot of trouble before you are able to correct your course.

Retrograde Mercury will be precisely conjunct the lunar North Node and closely enough conjoined with the Sun, Moon and even Saturn during this eclipse. How you think and communicate is therefore due some considerable diligence. When in doubt, simply note events in detail for later reference. Honor your feelings for sure, but more along the lines of observing them than acting on them in the midst of all the other astrological hubbub.

For if there is any correspondence between Mercury’s Scorpio retrograde and the metaphor of our impending solar eclipse as a transportation terminal, it would be a correlation with the hubbub often encountered in such a place, and the importance of both focus and restraint under such circumstances. For that reason alone, the next several days will be no time to draw hasty conclusions or make summary judgements lest you lead yourself and others energetically astray.

Fortunately, or unfortunately depending on how you handle it, a lot of energy will be associated with this impending solar eclipse as indicated by Mars. You might say it will be the weather inside you. With a precise sextile from the conjoined Sun and Moon to its Virgo transit, Mars will offer its vitality to either support your transition out of an eclipse cycle or make it a bumpy ride. At the terminal end of an eventful journey that started with the Aries lunar eclipse of Oct. 18, you will be able to use the energy, so long as it is not using you.

That’s how you should monitor your internal weather going into and through the weekend. In spite of what the legendary Al Sleet may think, it’s an important factor. Even though you will just be passing through the terminal as the Moon’s shadow falls across the Earth from one side of the Atlantic to the other, the quality and outcome of your arrival will largely depend on how you handle the heat that goes with it.

  1. recognizant: Thank you for sharing your resonant journey so eloquently. It appears you are on the appropriate path. Your empathy and compassion remind me of Steinbeck, and i’m sure that your sympathetic artistic path will be something he would admire. Best of luck glimpsing the eclipse.

Strawberry: Speaking of a resonant journey! Thank you for sharing your dream. It gave me a feeling of personal liberation just reading your words.

maddalena: Welcome. It is a privilege to receive your comment. It is good to know you find gain where others feel loss – that is an inspiration for all of us to do the same. Best of luck on finding the perfect room mate soon.

  2. with all due respect, I look forward to FALL BACK every year because it feels like I am getting another hour!
gritting my teeth with this mess in my 7th house while i look for a roommate. ARGH.

  3. Last night I dreamed that I boarded a bus to Puerta Vallarta baggage-free. Earlier in the dream I’d been trying to figure out how to get everything I needed into my bags, but then it was time, so I left it all behind, boarded the bus, asked the driver if it was the right one & whether I could get there without all my baggage, and when she said ” yes” I sat down feeling amazing. I know what’s in those bags I left at the terminal, & tho bit may be nerve-wracking to go on without all of it, I truly don’t need it where I’m going. 🙂

Thanks for the travel advice, Len. Eclipses have a way of wringing me out, but they leave me lighter.

  4. Thanks Len, yes I have been getting that message from multiple sources……..It was NOT my first choice for these aspects, but then that one has been eliminated very terminally several months ago.
Traveled 1505 mile round trip Oct 17,day before the eclipse to join other family members in scattering the Matriarch’s ashes in the Atlantic Ocean, Oct 19.
“Wherever you go, there you are.” the trip was an observation of sociological conditions in other parts of the country. We hadn’t checked in to our NJ ,motel for more than an hour when I observed to my Brother….”I think these people are living here.” We were watching a gang of racially mixed children play in a gazebo, on the green, center of the parking area, while their parents watched from chairs in front of the units. Every once in a while an adult would ride off on a bike or be pocked up by someone ina car. & I realized they were going to work, leaving the other parents to supervise. We jokingly referred to it as the Section 8 motel, but no, these people were other own. AS I sat in the motel office with my laptop for better wifi reception, I witnessed one guy having to check out he didn’t have the money to stay, & another came in a pickup with a wife & 3 kids, having earned enough $ to stay the night. ( They’d been there before. ) The Indian & Pakastani desk clerks were sympathetic to the situation and doing what they could do, to ease the situation. So the group was racially & nationally mixed.all pulling together to make the most of a bad situation.
I had already encountered before leaving Maine, a Tea bagger, whose rant prompted my response; “We both want & need the same things, but we are 180˚ apart in how to achieve them, how can we work together?” And yes I’ll seek the beach early tomorrow am.The eclipse NN is 1˚ from my 8˚ NN & 3˚s from opposed my N Sun. I am thinking the choice needed, is to set aside, the beautiful water paintings I have been doing, & use my artwork to communicate, educate and bring together these opposing, ideologies………via comics & graphic novels, to making us all one with a positive agenda…………..I am consciously open to indicators that I am on the right path.
bkoehler…..your astrological assessment is right on as usual.

  5. Hello Len
Do you think that energy March and Uranus was at work in your article?, and yet these planetary energies will act on the East coast of the United States. I will bring together three methods in my next article on my blog, it is ready to post, but I prefer to do it under the Moon sextile to Venus and the Sun at its Zenith and not to the Nadir.
Eclipse of the moon on 18 October in America, but the other removed from the Ocean it was 19 and in the Tarot of Marseille 18 + 19 = Moon Sun my nickname, the miracle of the Court, as the average age…, 2 o’clock in the morning spent in France… good night all 🙂

  6. Bette Loreen: Thank you again. It is very gratifying to know my small service has been helpful to you.

Chief Niwots Son: Thank you for sharing how your experience correlates with the astrological weather. My heart goes out to you for having endured such a long transition. My humble wishes are for peace in your stout heart, and for all the spirits and souls involved.

palock9: It is for me to thank you for finding use in my service, and for distributing it to others who may be able to use it was well. Thank your also for sharing how the transiting events are integrating with your personal astrology.

wandering_yeti: Congratulations on attaining the grasp you have so long reached for. May Venus further serve to support your practice and provide you with the sort of abundant return you seek on your creative endeavors.

  7. Rhetorical I think…in speech the sonic inflections would have communicated that the sentence was meant to express my feeling of not having quite gotten used to this way of feeling Venus yet. Direct motion started creeping out of the station on my nadir at 25 Capricorn last December.

I’ve noticed that for timing life events secondary progressions are the most obvious. When my prog. Venus crossed from Aquarius to Capricorn in 1999 I stopped writing songs, stopped practicing stringed instruments, and spent the next 13 years building back up to songcraft again starting by playing hand drums. I wasn’t even aware of my progressed Venus position until recently so I couldn’t have engineered it that way. So yeah, it was a rhetorical statement if I understand what rhetorical means. I’ve spent nearly 40 years trying to express my ascendant’s ruler in backhanded ways. I’m still getting my sea legs on the new groove.

  8. Wow – this just brings it all into focus. Thank you, Len. I’ve sent it to some of my less “astrology minded” friends for it clarity and ease of understanding. Personally – my 11th house cusp is 13.52 Scorpio and my Mercury is 9.29 Cap – and most of my other natal planets are involved in the current astrology so I’m definitely in the center of the storm at the moment. Using hummingbird medicine to find stillness in flight amidst the chaos.

  9. Transitions indeed! My family was able to complete a piece of business after 6 years, closing out the estate of the Matriarch. Freedom for everyone involved, especially appropriate for Dia de los Muertos.

I am looking forward to what can come in now that the past has been laid to rest, and the dead are grateful.

  10. Len – re your remarks about the meaning of “abstract” – I had never thought of it that way.
Very helpful – thank-you. It’s so easy to become accustomed to specific (narrow) definitions.
Rob44, I’ll vouch for Len’s remark “Wherever you go, there you are” – on the other hand, there are occasions when I’ve consciously chosen to refuse to come out until I’m darn good & ready. But when I do come out, there I am, but hopefully on my terms.

  11. Salamander: Thank you for what you have shared. There are some excellent patterns here that you are setting. First, you are in action – that is huge. Next, you have the realistic understanding that gratification may be delayed – that is important too. Finally, you have realistic, attainable goals and ways of measuring your progress. Please persevere while also giving yourself credit for what you have already done.

  12. The notion of a transition with this eclipse makes perfect sense, Len Wallick. For a while, I have been preparing myself for part 2 of my internship (still waiting, but I’m sure an interview date will be established shortly after the eclipse, or when Mercury turns direct). I’ll also be practicing the finishing touches of my driving.

As far as Mars is concerned, I’ve been working on motivating myself, and really working on self-improvement in many ways (physically, intellectually, emotionally…).

I also realize how important it is for me to help my mother as much as possible.

  13. wandering_yeti: Please, is your question rhetorical. In the even you are seeking an answer, please accept my service. Take he age you have reached (or will reach) on your nearest birthday. Say, 27 years. Convert that to days – that is to say 27 days. Find an ephemeris for the year of your birth. count forward 27 days and see if Venus has stationed direct yet. Of course all of this assumes age 27. Please use whatever age you actually are or are about to be. Finally, congratulations on the apparent consolidation of your musical collaboration! That is an excellent development.

Bette Loreen: Thank you for sharing your rich resonance with the service offered. Take a hand in guiding the emerging patterns because, you know, you can. From what i understand the “abstract” in “abstract art” means “to select”. If that understanding is correct, any discretion you exercise to make or change the patterns of your life will, in fact, be an abstract artistic practice.

Rob44: Please, how may i serve to help resolve this in a satisfactory manner? Perhaps if you describe where you see a double bind in today’s offering that would be a start. In the meantime, please consider that everything in today’s offering was intended to empower you by suggesting what you can do. Taken that way, staying in the house would be no solution because “wherever you go, there you are”. Standing by to serve further if you wish.

  14. This read too much like a double-bind situation to me, in the context of other readings here on the weekend’s passages. Makes me wonder if I should even leave the house for the next three days.

  15. Thank-you, Len – your imagery here has lent itself quite wonderfully to my making sense (& keeping track) of all sorts of incoming information, energies, etc. I normally live a very solitary life, often not seeing or talking with anyone for a day or three or more. Being in any transportation hub (literal or metaphoric) has never been a comfortable place for me.

People have been popping up & popping in, including a friend whose codependent vulnerabilities has him deeply enmeshed in someone else’s drama, as he exhausts himself playing rescuer…I’ve had to define my boundaries around how much I am willing to even hear, yet find a way to value his good intent. Then there’s the pal from fifty years ago wanting to spend time catching up. I think I’d like to do that, sometime after Mercury turns direct.

Then there’s the relationship history surfacing (Saturn transiting natal moon, & the eclipse will be there also), trailing all sorts of feelings, some quite ragged & ugly, which must be felt, processed, worked through…sometimes I wish I could do abstract art – it might lend itself better to such material.

Anyway, I’m thankful for the advance notice I’ve gleaned from all at PW, as I work my way through this unaccustomed “busy-ness”. I’m staying close to home, finishing my yard work, sorting papers (more history). Mars is currently in my 4th, so that seems appropriate.

New moon/eclipse on my 5th house moon – yes, time to get to my art table. A landscape study, I expect – with water in it.

  16. Is my progressed Venus direct or something? I was born a day after the station retro so I’ve been waiting awhile. I guess that’s just part of the package when you feel Venus vibrating entirely through signs ruled by Saturn on the level of secondary progressions- Aquarius back to Capricorn for me. The eclipse squares my natal Venus: the artist wants to fly so bad he could break his wings if he takes off too quickly. Saturn sez: not so fast.

A group of cats I’ve been jamming with almost every tuesday for the last 3 years organize into a band. Few details visible from this side of Winter, but as you say we gotta focus our intentions on locating the right bus now. Yes, for now we winter up and woodshed, honing our skills so that when the dragon lands in the spring we’re ready to fly.

  17. be: Thank you so very much for an additional, useful, and very pertinent take on “terminal”. Thank you also for a look ahead to the critical Taurus Full Moon, which (even though it will not be an eclipse) is something to consider as part of the whole. Please do not worry about the flub. It appears that retrograde Mercury is snagging all of us somehow. Perhaps everybody in the world should dress as Homer Simpson today in order to lighten up and enjoy this particular Halloween united in good will and good humor (as well as in peace and joy). Mmmmm….candy.

  18. Adore this Len; terminal, not terminal; terminal as end, terminal as a place to connect to a system taking you somewhere else. . .

However, I would not be able to reply in a timely fashion to your marvelous thoughts if I gave considerable diligence to my own thoughts. Therefore I’m going whole hog into acting on my feelings, rather than just observing them. Webster in his 4-part description of the word Terminal says for #4. . . “a device, usually with a keyboard and video display, for putting data in, or getting it from, a computer.” 🙂 This could put a whole new slant on the Scorpio-eclipse-Mercury rx-Saturn-loss-Mars-Virgo scenario. Now THAT I will spend some time pondering.

In the mean time, I’m thinking about how the media has doted for days on the startup of registering for Obamacare. Boring. However, today the media gave a nod to the long overdue farm bill sans food stamps (SNAP) $$ which lends itself to the Scorpio-Saturn-Loss part of the picture. An eclipse could change that scene however, if Mars in Virgo sextile Sun-Moon in Scorpio (conjunct-Mercury rx-north node) is added, giving Virgo (aid, crops) Mars (push forward) in mutual reception to Scorpio (power) Mercury rx (re-think) who conjuncts the NN (path forward) some extra time to wheel and deal. Think of it as a detour, or a longer wait than expected for the connecting flight. That would make me hot.

You see, the Taurus lunar eclipse at 25 degrees on Nov. 17th will conjunct Pres. Obama’s Vesta (25+ Taurus), and the farm aid bill is something the President is deeply inVESTA’d in. By December 1, trans. Mercury will have stationed direct and be approaching the President’s MC (reputation) just as Pallas-Athene reaches the degree where this Sunday’s solar eclipse Mars is/was (7+ Virgo), and will sextile the north node (still at 7+ Scorpio!!)

This sextile between Pallas-Athene (strategy) and the NN (path forward) will form a yod with Uranus (8+ Aries) who is in station-direct mode and just loves to break through stalemates. That “station” will happen the same day as the full moon on December 17 at 25+ Gemini. Just in time to avert a costly aspect of a 1949 law from going into effect on January 1. The solar return chart for the U.S. Sibly birth time has Mars at 24 Gemini 17 and conjunct the IC (getting to the bottom of things). Oh, the drama of it all. To terminate or not to terminate. . that is the question.

  19. suria: My thanks to you in return for being so kind.

DivaCarla: Thank you for asking. Please, there is no confusion. Standard time takes effect in Maine before the eclipse. Therefore, the eclipse is precisely three seconds before 7:50 am. Best of luck on glimpsing it. Many thanks to your close friend as well. May her vision come true and unite the world in peace and joy. Just please remind her to re-set the orgasm clock the night before.

  20. Len, I am so confused about the time on the eclipse, thanks to the time change in US. Not your fault of course. It matters to me because I live in one of the places where I may get to observe. The sun is rising in partial eclipse underway in Maine. So I am getting the local sunrise time from the tide chart and heading for a hill overlooking the ocean. It’s a crapshoot with ocean clouds if I’ll have clear view of the sun rising out of the ocean. Going for it, unless we have pouring rain.

Meanwhile, I want to share the thoughts of a close friend who reads these posts though she does not comment… This eclipse is going to unleash a huge orgasm when it passes. THAT’s what we have to get ready for. More accurately, that’s one of the possible outcomes we can choose for channeling this energy!
