Additional coverage of Neptune in Aquarius is at the Reality Check diary.
Today is Monday, Jan. 30, 2012. In the background of this week’s astrology is Neptune’s change of signs from Aquarius to Pisces. Outer planets changing signs mark distinct eras in the story of the world, or perhaps just the story of our culture. Being able to see these changes, and see the defining moments of these eras, is a basic element of modern astrological training or even awareness. The cycle that turns over on Friday, when Neptune ingresses Pisces (and makes no more retrogrades into Aquarius) has its origins on Jan. 28, 1998 (the day Neptune changed signs to Aquarius prior to its retrograde into Capricorn), and a second root on Nov. 27, 1998 (when Neptune entered Aquarius to stay for that cycle).
A lot has changed since 1998. You could argue the point that more changed in these 14 years than in the century that came before them, but really one is a logical extension of the other. Let’s come back to that in a moment — it will be a recurring theme this week, in blogs here, on the Reality Check website and with a focus in this week’s subscriber editions. Friday subscribers will receive a special edition horoscope focused on Neptune’s sign change.
Let’s look around at the rest of the sky. Mars turned retrograde a week ago and is still close to the point where it stationed, at 22+ Virgo. The theme of this degree is the discipline to control the martial power of Mars (the resemblance in the two words — Mars and martial, is not a coincidence). Mars is useless and even dangerous if we cannot control its power — which is about will, intention, vital force and more aggressive manifestations of the psyche.
The Sun and Mercury are in early Aquarius. The two are close to a their exterior conjunction, which happens Feb. 7. For Mercury retrograde watchers, this is the midpoint between the retrograde phases. The next Mercury retrograde begins March 12 and ends April 4.

The Moon is in Aries overnight Sunday to Monday and ingresses Taurus at 1:28 am EST Monday. The Moon is now opposite Saturn, which can be emotionally tense — but can also represent the resolution of a standoff of some kind. This doesn’t mean you will resolve it with whoever is involved (that is possible) but this setup represents the potential to come to some closure in your own mind and feelings, particularly if there is an impasse. Once ingressing Taurus, the Moon makes a conjunction to Jupiter and a sextile to Chiron, calling attention on one of the true gems in the sky right now — the Jupiter-Chiron sextile. This is useful spiritual power with some leverage behind it — especially true given that Jupiter is currently in the part of the sky where Chiron was discovered in 1977. Think of that as Jupiter sextile Chiron and Jupiter conjunct Chiron at the same time.
Notably, this involves the traditional ruler of Pisces (Jupiter) and Pisces itself, during the very days when Pisces is about to receive the ingress of Neptune. There is something here about staying aligned with the inner wisdom-from-the-core represented by Chiron, which guides us to access the wider, culturally-focused wisdom of Jupiter. You could say the message is pay attention to the expressions of subtle energy, ideas and inspiration. Where Chiron is a factor in the equation, the message is pay attention and take notes, then you will receive the benefits of information related to your healing process and the wider healing process that we all share.
As you do this, remember the sign change of Neptune. This is both a turning point for you individually and for the society we live in. It’s the beginning of a new cycle involving a subtle but extremely effective influence — Neptune — that is badly abused by our society. Neptune energy is almost always exploited or used for escapism, when it has the power to inspire us, or to grant that sense of connection to something else. Neptune is too often used to con us with lies and denial when it’s much more effective as a beacon to guide us toward our inner truth, subtle and elusive though it may be.
You cannot really catch Neptune in a flask, but Chiron in Pisces is reminding us that if we use our minds, use our senses and keep a sharp pencil around, we can learn plenty, and that information will have the odd property of actually being useful.

Oh, gosh. I am sooooo sorry. I just got carried away with Eric’s note about the government and lighthouses.
Please forgive me, all of you good people. I shall not post any more. Promise.

Neptune and oil:
Kermit and PIggy Fire Back at Fox News
http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/upshot/kermit-piggy-fire-back-fox-news-223536274.html
(heh-heh)
“Several weeks ago, Dan Gainor of the conservative Media Research Center told Fox Business host Eric Bolling that “The Muppets,” the new movie starring Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy, had a liberal agenda.
“It’s amazing how far the left will go … to manipulate your kids to … give them the anti-corporate message.” Gainor went on to say that Hollywood is trying to brainwash kids. Bolling later apologized (sort of).
The film’s villain is an oil baron named Tex Richman (Chris Cooper) who wants to destroy the Muppet studios in order to dig for oil.
The stars of the movie, Kermit and Miss Piggy, recently responded to the accusations. As Forbes reports, at a press conference in the U.K. for the movie’s premier, a reporter asked Kermit how he felt about the charge that the film is “dangerous.”
A sarcastic Kermit responded, “Oh, it’s so dangerous! No, it’s a funny thing. They were concerned about us having some prejudice against oil companies. And I can tell you that’s categorically not true. And, besides, if we have problems with oil companies, why would we have spent the entire film driving around in a gas-guzzling Rolls-Royce?”
Following Kermit’s comments, Miss Piggy chimed in. “It’s almost as laughable as accusing Fox News of, you know, being news.”
Kermit then said, “Boy, that’s going to be all over the Internet.” Good call, Kermit.”
You know, lighthouses and the “good government” they stand for is in large part responsible for me joining the Coast Guard so many years ago.
Almost every day I could watch the local Guardsmen go out and do something constructive, like save lives, tow boats to safety, maintain those buoys and lights, all of it. There was a lot to do, and they were good at it. Instead of taking life, they kept the rest of us from harm’s way on the sea. Not a bad gig if you do it.
Well, I never did save anyone directly, nor did I maintain any buoys. Instead, I helped all those who did do just that get their jobs done. In all six years the “save” count from my side of things was somewhere around 1000 or so. Not a bad career’s work for a government tool.
As for King Neptune, he’s in my fourth house – Scorpio that moment in time.
You know, the thing that is special about this installment of Daily Astrology took some contemplation for me to discover, even though it is plain and clear. The thing that is special is that this piece manages to use Neptune as a compass of sorts. That is some kinda awesome achievement. Don’t think i have ever seen that done before.
Hmmm.. Neptune rules Pisces which is 12th house (government, schools, hospitals) energy. Aquarius is ruled by Uranus which likes to break up stuff (the government?). Might Neptune going into Pisces mean a change in the way government is perceived and used in the near future? Instead of people wanting to break it into little pieces (aka “less government”) it may get a lot bigger in ways hard to define or see (Neptune). Or not. Just an amateur posting; I am very inexperienced about this stuff.
Also, I recall something about Pisces being more inclined to emotional absolutes (was that Liz Greene saying within Pisces is the Virgo rigidity?) which are hidden beneath other things whereas Aquarius is about breaking up absolutes and concrete things. I can’t remember. :::scratching head::::
Mental wanderings over….back to your regularly scheduled program now.
I love it here, as you must know by now (I mention this everytime I post a reply!) and I’m loathe to infect this lovely Pisces vibe by my own humble hand … but here goes.
Eric mentions this glorious government effort of the lighthouse. I am a huge fan of not only the lighthouse here, awesome share Amanda!, but of those who give a shout out to the good that government is here to do if indeed we participate … alas, here’s my petition, the Obama people emailed me to participate and this is the best I could do with their insistance that I use only however many words. Let me know thoughts, if you guys feel so moved. I labeled it: “We the 99%”
we petition the obama administration to:
Discuss recent financial meltdown; impact of money derailing lives and gov system. Fine / regulate those took advantage.
Money Derailed System; let us all participate in the solution. We the 99% need a methold to participate in the system since our Congress is bought and paid for by the 1%. Help us help you help us.

Neptune, Neptune, Neptune-
ahhhhhhhhhhhh! Am awaiting it on my Sun! Been Squaring my Moon forever (and my Neptune) – what can I say?
Article led me to wonder………….Neptune was in late Capricorn, when I returned to college, ( Maine College of Art), a non-trad student, 1996-97, Graphic Design major. What a horrible year……..Nept was opposed my N pluto 2nd H, The school was run by sclerotic old white men…..
# in medicine, Sclerosis (medicine)
# in zoology, a process which hardens animal exoskeletons by adding proteins such as resilin and sometimes mineral salts such as calcium carbonate
# in botany, a process which hardens plant tissue by adding fibers and sclereids, resulting in sclerenchyma
# Cyberbrain Sclerosis, a fictional disease introduced in Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex. The disease is characterized by hardening of the brain tissues precipitated by the cyberization process.
I DID learn the nuts & bolts of computer software, but even with T Saturn crossing my MC when I should have reaped the fruits of my earlier labors……….it did NOTHING for my creativity.
That column on the left side of the MECA facade? Paid for by my tuition!
I hear, happily, that the school has changed now.
I found it truly moving to discover (after coming home, and searching Wikipedia to write my caption) that this lighthouse was the first ever public works project of the United States of America. The first of anything is worth paying attention to. Consider the current public debate about privatizing everything and the government having no role (which as ever sounds to me like the Mafia lobbying to get rid of the FBI). This is the kind of thing that a government is born to do — and they did a pretty good job — it’s still in great shape and doing its work: protecting sailors and ships, aiding navigation, supporting the pleasure and commerce that fall under the general heading of “freedom.”
