I was in Egypt mid July for 5 days.
Firstly, you cannot trust the media to give real news. Tahir Square was very quiet and people went about their daily lives. It may be that the month of Ramadan and the extreme high temps kept people at home.
The majority of Egyptians, divided between Muslim and Coptic Orthodox, both intended the removal of the Brotherhood led ex President Morsi.
97% of the population are in cahoots, religion has not divided them on this front
A civil war between a majority and smaller minority is not feasible
Muslims in Egypt are secular and they have no desire to spread Islam the way the Brotherhood intends.
Morsi had a very short time ( a year) to make some quick developments whether in infrastructure or to the standard of living, but he is seen as simply furthering the Brotherhood agenda.
Egyptians want a better standard of living not more Mosques!
The government of Turkey is run by the Brotherhood and sure enough its reign there will soon be over.
Most recently in the United Emirates in Dubai, 65 men where arrested in less then 20 minutes and jailed up to 15 years for undermining the UAE government for trying to spread the Brotherhood agenda. The women, all of 25 in number, where not sentenced.
The UAE follows the Quran very closely – strict followers of Islam law. Even so they do not want the Brotherhood embroiled in their way of life
As for Obama, Egyptians mistrust his political agenda and they believe he secretly supports the Brotherhood.
Interesting that last night the mainstream media focused on the burning of Christian churches and made it look as though Muslims were doing it. If there were a covert message it would sound like our government is using what is happening there as one more “proof” of Muslim savagery. What better way to whip up American Evangelical frenzy than to show Christians being persecuted by Muslims. Evangelicals already have a strong pro-military “kill the heathens” attitude; this would be another boon to the military industrial complex: we just “have” to sell-weapons/occupy/help-protect-the-Christians, blah, blah, blah.
I am not saying that is what it is; but it is one idea (among many) that popped up in my mind as I watched churches burn last night on the news. Propaganda works and is alive and well in America.

spoke to a close family friend last night whose family is still in the midst of things in cairo–a few things came up which i find interesting as a sample of popular discourse that is resulting of the violence:
1) muslim brotherhood is the one sacking/burning the coptic churches
then blaming it on military
2) popular opinion is that hamas has infiltrated muslim brotherhood and is
trying to incite civil war to install an Islamic republic along the lines of 1979 Iran
(his words were ‘comme Khomeini’- a Khomeini style government)
3)insists that despite what is being shown on television, the violence is still concentrated on specific areas and directed specifically towards the brotherhood by the military, and not towards the general public unless they are in the thick of the protest action, i.e., encampments set up in protest.
i know its just heresay but i find it interesting when there arise breaks in official and popular version of events, especially in the light of your comment about mars and eris and covert operations.
