Good morning.
Today’s podcast addresses the shootings in Tucson, Arizona. I talk about the signs leading up to the incident on Saturday. The discussion leads into describing the charts of Jared Lee Lougnher and Gabrielle Giffords. I conclude that, in the end, this was a sex crime. That is to say, it was a gender bias crime and a form of rape.
Here are the charts, both set for noon as we don’t have birth times. One thing I don’t quite cover in the audio is my delineation of the Mars-Chiron-Eris configuration in the charts of both Giffords and Loughner. I describe the synchronicities; for example, their mutual Mars-Chiron conjunctions.
In other words, each has Chiron where the other’s Mars is. Then, the two placements are square one another, essentially, creating a tense situation. Mars-Chiron calls attention to the warrior aspect of the male side, perhaps the most injured aspect of maleness there is (with the possible exception of sexual desire, which just about everyone wants but which is not exactly openly permitted to exist).
Both of these compound placements are aspected by Eris in Aries (a very longterm thing, which has not moved much in the 18 years between when the two were born). That adds a factor of mental chaos in Loughner’s case (he was a self-described nihilist, that word having the same root as annihilate) and a powerful, well-integrated woman in Giffords’ case. The thing about Eris is if you don’t pull the parts together, you end up with something deeply fragmented. It can work both ways, creating someone whose life can take many forms, or whose psyche fragments. In this situation, we have one inflicted on the other.
Loughner had other issues; he has many placements in Virgo, again, trying to express masculine biology through a feminine filter. He has the Sun conjunct Nessus, as did Giffords. Nessus, as I explain in the presentation, has a structural delineation of things that come full circle; it can also indicate sexual abuse, and I feel strongly about that potential in Loughner’s case.

I think my life has conspired to prevent me from hating men even though most of my abuse was perpetrated by them. Divine masculine has been a major part of my healing despite the anger that I carried for many years. I forgot to say my husband and I paid off my therapist several years ago. She let me run up a $17,000 or so bill and pay it off little by little. I used to call myself her ‘walking IRA.’
wordedgewise, You might want to try some visualization techniques. Get into a quiet state with some log slow breaths-breathe in the light through you crown chakra and and exhale the negative out your feet or sole/soul. Picture yourself in a beautiful ethereal bubble, like the kind you see kids blow, with a mirror surface. When confronted with evil or Palinesque energy it will reflect it back at them and you remain in a safe place unsullied and serene. It’s a simple image I find helpful.
So I was in a therapy group for quite a few years recovering from years of sexual abuse and multiple rapes. When a man in the group shared about his perpetrator history honestly, I was finally able to move out of the victim identity I had been locked into. He enabled me to see that I had also been a perpetrator in some of the ways I had acted out my abuse history and my rage and pain about said history. It was the biggest emotional gift I received in that group. Admitting this to myself and group members was the beginning of forgiveness for my perpetrators and myself. It was this same man who helped me learn to recognize and accept appropriate and safe masculine love.
One of the guided meditations we did in this group was to imagine ourselves with the genitalia of the opposite sex. The therapist talked us slowly through creating this imagery in our minds. At the moment my glorious penis and balls were complete I was overcome with joy. The very next instant was filled with terror and this thought: “How can I keep from using this as a weapon?” Then I felt sad.
I benefited from therapy so much. It helped me see my masculine and feminine spirit as acceptable and powerful and now, so interwoven that I can call upon the qualities of both in any situation. Not perfectly but mostly competently. It took forever and I probably spent upwards of $35,000 over the years getting it. When I crashed with my history, I was 30 years old. I read an article on Adult Child of Alcoholic syndrome when I was in a treatment center trying to keep from committing suicide in a psychotic break. I read that working through those emotions was like crawling back through a minefield that you had only just survived. At that moment I knew what I wanted. I decided to crawl all the way back through the minefield. I decided I wanted to become as close as possible to being the person I could have been had none of those bad things ever happened. People occasionally told me I was worth this investment. Now I know I am, and I’ve known it for a long time.
I’m anti-death penalty. I used to think that a far greater punishment for a perpetrator along the lines of Jared Loughner would be to have to live with what he or she had done. Now I think letting the perpetrator live allows for healing and forgiveness on both sides of the event, even the victim’s side. Honestly, I hope I don’t ever have to live through finding my way to such a forgiveness as either victim or perpetrator. I do hope that should such an eventuality occur that I will do just that with the help of like-minded people and all benevolent powers of the universe.

Even if they don’t meet, face to face, again in this lifetime, it feels like there is more to play out in the relationship interaction between them, *somehow*, given the amazing connection in their two charts, and the fact they both survived…. Will sure be interesting to see.
and saying that feels a bit cold-blooded…….. yet, along with the heart response to this situation, I am very interested at the same time. Because in so many ways this drama feels archetypal and very important as it continues to play out…….
Jere, I was sensing that they may meet up sometime in the future as well. I want to feel she survived for a reason; a healing one. That’s she’s alive, responsive and communicating in some fashion is fantastic. Thumbs up right back at you Ms. Giffords.
With regards to their charts, and again referencing BHC (Barbara Hand Clow) with her learned expertise with Chiron, Giffords has a more favourable positioning in Aries to his placement in Cancer. In the case of the later, Loughner would have “an intense insecurity dynamic operating” whereas Gifford’s Chiron in Aries affords a more compatible attunement to the energy of Mars, and people with this aspect often become “trailblazers and are known as courageous people.”
Gabrielle Giffords has courage all right, setting up to meet the public *out in the open* like she did last Saturday, when she knew that she had been threatened and targeted repeatedly. Eric’s astute discussion here about Loughren’s disconnect from his inner feminine, along with being threatened and enraged by her successes out in the world would help explain why he went after her like he did. “Gender rage” fits for sure, massively sad and all as that is.

Eric, you have brought up a topic that was toward the end of your commentary regarding “gender rage”. Nobody really talks about this so thanks for bringing it up.
Also, re signs and symbols, when I wrote 1/1/11 on a check yesterday it seemed auspicious and looked like primitive markings. Did you ever see I Claudius on Masterpiece Theatre where as a young man a tiny wolf cub that two eagles had been fighting over falls out of the sky and into the arms of the emperor-to-be? He was scoffed at because he was thought to be an idiot.

It looks like it’s time for us to embrace the asteroids! If we approach them with an open mind and readiness to heal I believe they will teach us much in the way of how to heal our emotional wounds involving relationships. When I first looked at these charts I couldn’t see what you were describing but once I let go of my preconceived notion of what “I know” then I saw it. Kind of like looking at one of those 3D Magic Eye pictures.
Also, could you post that etymology website you mentioned? I couldn’t pinpoint it.

Unless she visits him in jail, they will probably not meet. I cannot imagine he will have a trial. To get out of the death penalty he will have to plead, and let the state out of the expense and trauma of a trial. If he’s a real terrorist he will put them through precisely that and try to make them kill him; but the next stage will be up to psychiatrists.
They have both survived, in radically transformed ways.
Eric, good point. So — acknowledging that we don’t know what would have happened and that this is more of a stretch — both of his primary targets, the one “outside” and the one “inside” – Giffords and himself, survived this. Which itself is interesting. It would be instructive to see how their charts might speak to any future encounters they might have. (Hoping of course that anything like that would be a step toward healing…… wouldn’t that be a Chiron-ish development????)

You’ve managed to tease out the underlying theme quite succinctly. When I heard yesterday that Loughner fixated on Giffords a couple of years ago, it struck me that the shooting had more to do with violating her than it had to do with politics. This may have been an act of sexual aggression. There’s a lot of healing that needs to happen, personal and political.
Usually these mass killers shoot themselves. I guess he thought he was going to be able to reload…he had four magazines with a total of 91 rounds. He fired 31 times. So we have no idea what he would have done, had he reloaded.

Eric, this podcast is great, very compelling. I was stunned to learn of the Chiron/Mars relationship in both charts, wow, that alone! is so powerful.
I listened to this last night shortly after it was posted as I happened to catch it then, and the only venue was the player here — I use Firefox and have Snow Leopard OS — and the audio on this onsite player has uneven sound for me, cuts off and back on repeatedly, but I was able to listen all the way through despite that and forgot about it in my interest in the content. 🙂
