Consider some of the similarities between relationships and religion. I have a hunch you’re already onto this theme, though not necessarily in quite these terms. Religion is a belief system grounded in tradition and based on faith. A relationship is a system of coexistence with a person who is often granted divine powers, or to whom we are bonded in a ritual that is blessed by spiritual agency, often based on personal tradition and, when it’s working, is rooted in faith. Yet more often, religion and relationships are really based not on faith, but rather on hope and belief. We “believe in” people, we believe in the story of our love. And, very dependably, we believe in sacrifice — a very religious theme. What if your religion of love shifted to one based on faith and natural processes — like the seasons, for insance — rather than any of this other stuff?
