This is our 6,000th blog post

Planet Waves switched to a blog format in July 2008, just as the presidential election was warming up. It took a lot to get me here, and we experimented with several different platforms before choosing the one we currently have — Word Press. This post is our 6,000th on this blog. That means that for the past four years we’ve averaged 4.1 posts per day.

Original cover of Planet Waves as it appeared starting in late 1998. This particular version is from mid-2000. Note the Aquarius glyph built into the logo for the website. The text along the bottom is elvish for “A star shines on the hour of our meeting,” spoken by Frodo Baggins to the elves who helped him and his fellow hobbits out as they were being stalked by the black riders the first night they were on the road to Rivendell. PW logo (always in my handwriting) and elvish script were rendered by Via Keller, and the supernova is some clip art that I modified in Photoshop.

When we started the Planet Waves blog in 2008, my vision was for a group project, featuring a diversity of writers and subjects, moving quickly and providing mostly original content. I also envisioned an active audio channel, with both talk and music programming, in the form of Planet Waves FM. This, we have been able to create without taking a single advertisement, incurring no debt to investors and retaining full ownership of the company.

We are sponsored by our subscribers and customers, and some people who have written checks just because they wanted to — thank you for doing your metaphysical and personal healing ‘shopping’ here.

If you like this blog you will love our products, and you’ll be supporting the holistic enterprise known as Planet Waves. Publishing this feature is a collaboration of many writers, an editor who puts half her hours into this one feature (that would be Amanda), graphic support from Sarah and tech support from Anatoly. What most websites do to cover those costs is weigh their page down with ads. As I’ve said many times, that’s not the purpose of Planet Waves. We’re here for you, because of you and we thrive on your participation and contribution to what we’re doing.

A few other stats: the first year we were averaging about 60,000 visits per month; we’ve doubled that over four years. We are rapidly approaching four million visits to this blog. As of today there have been 37,498 comments. And so far I nave not seen spam appear in a comment, even once.

  1. The Mad Hatter: “There is a place. Like no place on Earth. A land full of wonder, mystery, and danger! Some say to survive it: You need to be as mad as a hatter. . . Which luckily I am.”

There is no other place like Planet Waves.

Late in commenting, but one of ultimate gratitude for an excellent oasis in a world gone mad. Simply thank you to all for all you do.

  2. I arrived on this blog by chance in April after a search on Google on an asteroid and trained in this mad astrological adventure on planet Waves, me am left bringing me a renewed vacuum source.

You have a wonderful idea Eric to create this community blog that it would be difficult to compose if you were alone in publishing. The drafting of an article time consuming itself between the publication, dissemination, responses to the comments….

I also experienced this excitement that provides as many visitors when I was on the 24 h Post would receive 5000 visitors, there was a big traffic on this community space and in January the version changed by becoming the Huffington Post in French and closure of the blogs of the members. I have not had no choice after wandering on Epanews which I not liked to revive my old blog which had suffered a migration on WordPress…
My tendency for asteroids is relatively recent and well was something deep in me turning it in a unique way in its French version….

Without being a scholar of the English language, the translator has become another form of learning the language that I Ma not at all and which deprives me of the audio part, but I do does that this makes the property has my soul….

Astrology was in need of a great shakeout, thank you contribute Eric and all the other authors Len, Amanda… thank you has you all ๐Ÿ™‚ ๐Ÿ™‚ ๐Ÿ™‚

I barely remember the old format…you continue to evolve in a lovely, engaging way, and your content is mind- (and soul-) boggling. It’s refreshing to come here after bopping my way around other sites I visit. Kinda like taking a walk through the magical forest. I feel so lucky to have been a small part of this endeavor for all this time. *swak*

  8. I’m a newcomer here, but I was just thinking a few minutes ago, before logging on, that reading and listening to PlanetWaves is what I do instead of watching TV. This is an extraordinary site, comforting and useful and challenging (in a good way), addressing all the stuff that’s most important in life. It’s worth every penny of the subscription fee. I know as a journalist myself how hard you all must work to keep it all going โ€“ the velocity, quality and substance of what you post. I’ve often wondered how you do it! So congratulations, and deepest thanks. K

  13. Congratulations, Eric, for your vision and persistence and talent.
Congratulations to everyone at Planet Waves!

You have created an amazing, intelligent space that has helped me make sense of the nonsensical, understand myself (and many others) better, prepared me for moments good and bad, and introduced me to a community of some damn smart and talented people – some of whose personal kindness and wisdom have helped me through some very precarious times.

I think Planet Waves is dynamite.
    Love to you all,
    Janet

  14. But for the grace of Eric, Amanda and others on the Planet Waves team, i don’t know what i would be doing or where i would be. “I’m Aquarius/Pisces cusp and Eric’s horoscopes have been dead on! Keep ’em coming!” –Nicole

and here’s a fun one about the Woody Guthrie edition of PW FM, which was tied in to the subscriber issue a couple weeks ago:

“Thank you so much for this wonderful program! I was so inspired by this! In fact, I was a DJ for 20 years and stepped back for a few years. Then last week made my first attempt to host a show again and felt inspired. Thanks to this show, i see how much can be given in a radio show and I am inspired again! Thank you!” — love, Blue

we are lucky, lucky people here at planet waves, getting to put this vision out into the world…
