Reflection Time

Today (or tonight, depending on where you are), the Full Moon in Libra furthers the cardinal sign ambiance that has consistently been the daily tableau since the Vernal Equinox. With frequent emphasis on the first degrees of Aries, Cancer, Libra and or Capricorn this pattern is consistent with the events that have taken place in our public and private lives. The political has now become continuously personal. This phenomenon is a clear indicator of a new era.

Before attending to the Full Moon, however, please allow us to pause and consider a rather momentous transit that concluded the eventful week just past. The point that represents the center of our galaxy has clearly and cleanly moved into the twenty-eighth degree of Sagittarius.

When we look at an ephemeris, the Galactic Center, if it is listed at all, is classified as a “fixed” point or “star.” Indeed, it would seem to be so. However, it does in fact progress along the zodiac at the almost imperceptible rate of about one arc minute per year. In other words, it takes over sixty years to move one degree; This is longer than it takes for Saturn to orbit the Sun twice. And it’s not really what’s moving — the Earth is wobbling, creating the illusion of movement.

The Sabian Symbol for Sagittarius 28 is “a splendidly built bridge, a heritage of unknown ages, still spans the beautiful and wildly primitive stream.” This image is consistent with the vision that Eric has forged into his annual editions over the last several years with titles “Bridge to the Core” and “Spiral Door.” It brings us into immediate appreciation of the vision he has unwaveringly held and communicated through Planet Waves.

The fact that this change of degree takes place within days of a historical grand cross aspect in the first degrees of a cardinal sign is no accident. The fact that it occurs in the midst of a long series of outer planet squares and oppositions in the cardinal signs is entirely consistent. This small change of degree is a big milestone along the road of astrological events that began in 2008 and which will carry through to 2012 and beyond.

In today’s blog we cannot hope to convey the full meaning of the Galactic Center’s transit to a new degree. Nor should we try. After all, we have more than half a century to sort that out. However, we can take clue from the Sabian representation. We have come to a bridge constructed long ago and still useful. That bridge intersects (in a square aspect, if you will) something even more ancient. A representation of the Earth in its natural dynamic, the source and sustenance of our physical being.

But that’s the future and this is now. A Full Moon is the most accessible example of an opposition. The Sun is on one side at 9+ degrees Aries, the projector. Luna is on the other side, in the opposite sign, 9+ degrees Libra, the screen. We, here on Earth, are in the middle, the audience.

In the hours before this monthly opposition takes place, the Moon enters Libra with yet another in the recent and continuing series of cardinal point events. Minutes later it conjoins Saturn, retrograding towards its penultimate opposition with Uranus. Soon after it forms a sextile (sixty degrees of separation) with Mars, moving forward in the third degree of Leo, as we move forward towards making our desires real after a long winter of getting clear on them. Finally, just before fullness the Moon forms a square (90 degrees of separation) with Pluto in Capricorn, bringing us back to the big picture and the transformations we will be called upon to co-create in the years to come.

Thus the unique character of this Full Moon is defined. Not so much a culmination of the last few weeks, although there is some of that. Rather, a moment to contemplate what we have been through and are in the middle of. As such, it may be wise to take some time away from being in action, some time to reflect.

Some of us can still remember when the only way to view a motion picture was in a theater. This required stepping away from the activity of life for a few hours. It required us to be quiet and still in a public place as we sat in the dark among friends in passive observation. If weather permits, we may be best advised to do the same tonight as we view that big silver screen in the sky. To put the issues and conflicts and tension aside for an evening. To pull the paddle out of the water and drift along on the smooth water, thinking about where we have been and look around to appreciate where we are. To be refreshed.

Such a respite will become increasingly rare. Venus reminds us of that. Soon after Luna has reached the peak of fullness Venus marks the near end of its heroic journey in Aries by forming its very first trine (120 degrees of separation) to the Galactic Center in in its new degree.
