To Our Friends in the Midwest

Dear Friend and Reader:

Today as the late spring astrology comes to a crest, the Mississippi River is also coming to a crest. We are in a fast combination of a Full Moon, Mercury stationing direct, Pluto re-entering Sagittarius and the solstice (the Sun’s entry in to Cancer, which occurs Friday). We covered this in a recent edition of Planet Waves, which looked at Aries Point events surrounding the current retrograde.

To our Planet Waves readers living through this disaster along the Midwest, we are with you, worried about you, thinking about you. We have been following the news of the flooding since June 9, when it started in Wisconsin and spread to the Mississippi river. We’re glued to our television and computer screens as levees broke, as 40,000 of you were evacuated and as you lost homes, fields and livestock. Now we read that up to 30 more may overflow from Burlington, Iowa, down to St. Louis, only adding to the twenty that have overflowed already this week.

Saying that this flooding exceeds the damages from 1993 is little consolation to those of you experiencing the devastation of this flood. The situation has now reached a critical level and we are compelled to write to you.

The greatest concern, is the raw sewage and chemical pollution that is spilling out from chemical plants, wastewater treatment plants and sewers into the river and some of your well water. And, while this is a new danger, there is an older poison sitting on the bottom of the river.

One of the problems with the Mississippi flooding is the amount of dioxin sitting on the bottom, much which is being flushed up to the land, including to farmland along the flood plane, thus entering the food chain. The dioxin was put there by Monsanto through most of the 20th century, and the facts came out in a lawsuit called Frances Kemner vs. Monsanto. Dioxin primarily acts on the endocrine (hormone) system and is particularly dangerous to the highly sensitive female reproductive system.

As time goes on, we will see more of these “hidden” environmental problems come to the surface and demand attention. We had a similar situation with the flooding in New Orleans as a result of Hurricane Katrina. Yet notice how little attention it gets in the press, as if the problem does not even exist.

But your troubles exist to us, here at Planet Waves. We remember losing our first office to flooding in 1999, though it’s a drop in the sea compared to the Midwest over the last week-and-a-half. Our hearts are with you, and we hope you are safe.

Has someone moved into your apartment who refuses to leave? I’m sure they have a good reason for staying, such as being short 50 cents for bus fare back to Indianapolis. But I do suggest you be sure you want them there if they’re going to stick around. Remember that bed privileges are strictly optional, and should be based strictly on skill and quality.
