Yes, a week or two ago Amy Goodman had a guest on Democracy Now! whose name escapes me, but he’s a professor of Russian history at Yale or something (she had him on the show in January, too) to discuss the protests. He was very adamant about the far-right element in the protests taking things over and inciting violence in what had been otherwise peaceful protests, and definitely took the view that the US is doing their own angling in the area for its own interests. It was an interesting point of view to hear, including his description of Ukraine as being so fractured culturally for so much of its history.
In any case, I appreciate cartoonist Matt Bors’ observation about how little we know about the crisis if we rely on mainstream media — and just how easy it is to be mislead by the flashiness of modern “news” coverage.
Parry was awarded the George Polk Award for National Reporting in 1984 for his work with the Associated Press on the Iran-Contra story and uncovered Oliver North’s involvement in it as a Washington-based correspondent for Newsweek. He is known for his role in breaking the Psychological Operations in Guerrilla Warfare (CIA manual provided to the Nicaraguan contras) and the CIA and Contras cocaine trafficking in the US scandal in 1985.
Founder and editor of Consortium News online, Parry has written several books, including Lost History: Contras, Cocaine, the Press & “Project Truth” (1999); Secrecy & Privilege: Rise of the Bush Dynasty from Watergate to Iraq (2004); and America’s Stolen Narrative: From Washington and Madison to Nixon, Reagan and the Bushes to Obama (2012).
Parry’s latest report on Consortium News is “Putin or Kerry: Who’s Delusional?” (March 5, 2014)
