First Exit Poll Results Are In:

Indiana, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Ohio are the first states to have national exit polls reported. An exit poll is “a poll of voters taken immediately after they have exited the polling stations. Unlike an opinion poll, which asks whom the voter plans to vote for or some similar formulation, an exit poll asks whom the voter actually voted for.” Also, keep in mind that many people have voted early, and are not being accounted for in the following percentages.

Without further ado, here are the results:

New Voters
Indiana: 73% Obama to 27% McCain
Ohio: 69% Obama to 31% McCain
Virginia: 63% Obama to 36% McCain

White voters
Indiana: 44% Obama to 54% McCain
Ohio: 47% Obama 52% McCain
Virginia: 39% Obama to 58% McCain

Late Deciders
Indiana: 52% Obama to 45% McCain
Ohio: 54% Obama 39% McCain
Virginia: 44% Obama to 55% McCain

  1. More exit polls – from Marc Ambinder of the Atlantic Monthly:

    National Exit Poll Data….First Takes…

76% of the country believes it’s off on the wrong track.

    Bush’s approval rating is 27%

More than 60% say the economy is their top voting issue; 9 in ten say the economy is in bad shape; more than 80% are worried about their own condition next year.

Change voters made up 35% of the electorate; 30% wanted someone who shared their values.

One in ten voters are late-deciders..

And CNN tells us that of those who listed Iraq as a key issue, Obama’s leading two to one.
