Ceremonial fire at the Grandmother Land during the total solar eclipse of Aug. 1, 2008. Photo by Eric Francis. |
Dear Friend and Reader:
Being an astrologer has taught me to create my own little brand of Paganism. You could call that a form of religion where you worship the natural world. When I can, I mark important events like eclipses or the changes of seasons with a ritual, something that helps me experience the moment consciously, and remember it in my senses and in my body.
Here is a photo of my fire from early this morning at the Grandmother Land in High Falls, New York.
Today’s Oracle takes us to the Taurus daily horoscope of Jan. 28, 2005.
Taurus can take a while to make a decision but when it finally comes, look out. There are certain issues on which you are not willing to compromise. You refuse to play games with right and wrong. If more people had this attitude the world would be in a state of peace and harmony every day. The best we can hope for is to change the world one person at a time beginning with ourselves. I suggest however that you not underestimate the power of your seemingly private choices on the world around you. Each decision you make no matter how small has impact far beyond what you imagine.

I can’t seem to find the picture that was posted of a guy measuring the moon–I wanted to find out who the photographer is and maybe get permission to use it. Here’s a poem I wrote after seeing the picture:
Measuring the Moon
At the top of the hill we found our chance,
the golden light erupting over the rim
like a fire-line in strong wind.
We held the tape between us, dabbing
our fingers in the molten edges while
crickets fiddled their raucous song
into the quavering air.
Somewhere, down below, we both knew
the kitchen light was on and people were wondering.
But civilization depends on the love of beauty,
numbers, light. I didn’t need to see your face to know
we would do our part.
The world these days is a death toll, spreading at the edges
like a stain. But the moon still rises over these rivers and fields,
with a lightness unpenetrated. How could I not understand
the insatiable greed of a tyrant, wanting to own that?
The moon sails above these things we do to each other:
these little wars, these little loves of ours.
