  1. It’s all so true — like we’ve been holding our breath for decades (or moving to New Zealand).

Free at last! Free at last! Thank God Almighty, we’re free at last!

NOW to do something we consider productive with our newfound sense of Freedom.

  2. I could not stop crying. I am 48, white, centrist Liberal, married, stay-at-home mom of four, secular homeschooler, that remembers the MLK marches and assassination. I have worked against bigotry and prejudice my whole life. My younger brother is like Barack Obama; half Black and half White. I called him and cried for this day because now his kids, who are part White, part Black, part Latino from their Mom’s side, and part Native American, will have a chance!

All I can hear in my mind is MLK saying “Free at last, Free at last, Thank God almighty we are free at last!” Free of Bush and Cheney and Rumsfeld and Wolfowitz and Rove. Free of the PNAC. The NEO Cons didn’t win THIS time.

Barack is a Gen. Jones, not a Boomer or GenXer, but a Joneser. He is a Trans-Culture-Kid, raised in another culture. He is bi-racial, and a parent of young kids. He is what we need NOW, to bridge the gap between all the things that divide us.

God, I can’t stop crying in relief and joy! I am beside myself. I am dancing the dance of joy, like David of Israel danced into Jerusalem. Finally, we have the right person for the job.

Now everyone PRAY, to whatever you believe in, that he remains SAFE, he and ALL his family.

    YES WE CAN!!!!!!

  3. Karen continues her report from the White House. Lots of people chanting “Barack’s house!”.

Sounds like a wild party in a town where the home team has just won the Super Bowl. She also says word on the street calls Obama’s win a mandate.

  4. Just got off the phone with my friend Karen.

She and her husband Dick are headed to the White House where a peaceful celebration is taking place. Washington D.C., a city built by slaves, is about to have an African American as President of the United States.

People are hugging each other and falling on each other. Washingtonians are experiencing a sense of relief tonight. And joy.

Is this really happening to us? Its amazing.

  5. My parents were ministers in Detroit during the Civil Rights movement– I grew up on (what felt like) steady diet of protests and riots, how many kids do you know that had a poster of MLK, RFK, a copy of the I Have A Dream speech and an American flag on their bedroom wall instead of posters of the Beatles? — so many of us from so many backgrounds have waited for this “moment”.

For the first time since JFK we have a president who brings dignity to that office.

Lots of tears. My kids are aware of how powerful this moment is. So cool.

  6. Rahmana:

My sister called me twice tonight and we just laughed the entire time.

Then she sent me a great Power Point slideshow of 100 years of history with “Change is Gonna Come” playing in the background.

As students of history, and educators, she and I are just revelling in the river of history that tonight is. We’re right in the middle of that stream. We should all be laughing and crying at the same time.

  7. Oh Fe, what is this like for you and the people from your generation? Thank you Fe! Thank you Assata! Thank you Harriet Tubman! Malcolm X Martin Huey Soujourner Nat Turner Frederick Douglas W.E.B. Dubois Zora Neale Hurston Langston Hughes John Coltrane John Lennon Ralph Nader All Abolitionists All comedians All poets all activists all community organizers, and thank you George Bush, were it not for your bottomless un-restrained self-serving callous greed, people would not have finally stood up and said ENOUGH.

  8. WHOOOOOOOOOOO HOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!
I am in tears and cannot say much more, except that my father died for this . . . You did it Papi!!!!!!!

  9. Yes, I caught the congratulation for being black – the bigotry was there just as it was when he pointed to “That One” in the debate – but I do think that overall it was an appropriate speech — gotta consider what a huge leap this is for him and those who support him.
