All Hail Mercury conjunct the Sun

Here is an astrology head’s up for tomorrow, in full effect today and overnight Monday: Mercury is conjunct the Sun. This will of course be in Aries and Mercury is in direct motion. Sun-Mercury conjunctions are often special days; there is something a little odd about them, and though astrology can have a peculiar amoral quality (that is, ‘good’ and ‘bad’ seem to matter less than we would like to imagine) I consistently see positive developments under this particular aspect: the superior or exterior conjunction of Mercury and the Sun.

The chart for tomorrow’s conjunction is one with some penetrating power: Mercury/Sun in Aries is sextile the lunar North Node. The Moon in Gemini (beginning at 9:35 am ET) also picks up the nodes by trine/sextile. The nodes offer momentum, public contact and in Aquarius a level of social interplay. Note today’s article in the Sunday New York Times about Facebook getting its 100 millionth member. The North Node is in Aquarius; the calling is to push forward into unfamiliar social territory rather than what we think we know and love.

Painting in the darker shades, Atlantis is square Hylonome, which is a cautionary note about the way that our technology is damaging us in a self-inflicted way. Facebook and the various controversies surrounding it are one of the milder examples of this — mild, that is, unless you notice that humans are social animals and that online contact may offer something but it’s not going to substitute for personal exchanges where pheromones, eye contact and the sound of someone’s voice are part of the experience.

Tantalus is conjunct the Aries Point. On the next page, we get a reminder of what a tease our world is, and how we drive ourselves forward with that tease, seemingly to no end — until we stop. Vesta squares Neptune: the question here is, to what extent do we believe in the concept of sacrifice? Do we see the extent to which sacrifice is the cornerstone of our belief system?

The Moon is waxing toward first quarter. The Sun is still in the first 10 degrees of Aries. It is a little over one month till Beltane, the Midspring holiday.

I’ll catch you in the morning. Subscribers and longtime readers, note that I will be changing the schedule of this blog, posting more subscriber content for about one week. This is designed as an invitation to some new readers to get involved. So if you’re seeing posts that say things like “Welcome to Planet Waves” and “Look at all this cool stuff we do,” you know why — and if you’re a subscriber and you like what we’re doing, please offer your comments if you have a moment.

Many thanks.

Eric Francis

PS, just so you don’t miss this one — Chimes of Freedom performed by Youssou N’dour. Right on. And those harmony vocals…
