A brainstorm

I wonder if the effects of microwaving food have ever been studied. We take for granted that it’s the same as other ways of making something hot, but it’s not. Water is normally heated through conduction, not by radiation. A microwave is literally a home irradiator.

If you’d be interested in chasing down studies and articles on this subject, please let me know.

  1. my understanding is that microwaving destroys the enzymes in food (needed for digestion of the food) and vits/minerals

  2. i got rid of mine 4 years ago for the same reason/research. i also looked into research on cooking with particular pots/pans (clay & iron vs. aluminum & steel). as natural as possible all the way around seems best.

  3. Eric,

I did substantial reading on this subject a year ago; what I found led me to get rid of my microwave and return to absolutely-no-microwave cooking/heating immediately.

Most of the studies were done outside of the U.S.A. – not surprising.

Side-effect? My kids have learned to COOK.

  4. Great idea!
I have been conscious of this problem for a long time. Back in the 80s I had an ear infection and the doctor used some device on me that was supposed to produce heat in the inner ear by way of short wave. During that time I started to learn the piano and was quite successful, but after the first treatment with this device I could not read two staffs of music at the same time anymore and had lost all of my recent progress. The effect of heating the ear could have been achieved by applying an infrared lamp, for instance, but seemingly this doctor loved his gadgets. The device was directed from the front to the inner ear and the effect was, as I believe, to scramble the newly formed synapses, if not the old ones. After discovering that my brainwaves were impaired after the first treatment, I went back to the doctor’s office and complained about the use of this device. But they did not know what I was talking about and obviously didn’t know what they were doing. To this day, I cannot read two staffs as well as I did before that treatment. I have never owned a microwave (not different from the shortwave they used on me) and do not use it in the office – as I believe that it is dangerous and btw also destroys the taste of food. A co-worker calls me Amish for this 🙂
