Turning the Difference – Sun Enters Virgo

By Len Wallick

Sun enters Virgo tomorrow morning at 7:21 am EDT. That is a substantial change. During its time in Leo, Sol has been the exclusive ruler, occupying its own castle. Now the solar archetype of day, light and consciousness will be expressed through a sign traditionally ruled by Mercury, the Sun’s nearest satellite. That, in the terse words of Robert Hand, “is quite different”.

Interestingly, both Mercury and the Moon (Virgo’s esoteric ruler), are presently positioned and moving as if to reinforce Hand’s perception. As our Sun symbolically turns from one’s personal space outward to the realm of personal relations, you can participate and make the difference real. It begins by simply watching the sky, aware of what you are seeing. At the beginning of solar Virgo, the Moon will be in Gemini, the other sign ruled by Mercury. The mercurial archetype combines thinking and communication. Sharing our thoughts with others is where we begin the process of turning ourselves towards relationships.

As befits its own relationship with the night, Luna is associated with emotions and mental activity we may conceal, even from ourselves. Having both luminaries subject to the disposition of Mercury on the Sun’s first day in Virgo implies a pattern: an integration of conscious thought with mental processes underneath our awareness. Here we now have the opportunity to include everything going on inside ourselves as part of the process of turning outwards towards others.

That symbolism is further reinforced when we consider the cyclical stages of the Moon and Mercury. Luna is moving closer to its monthly conjunction with the Sun. It is rising later and spending more of its time in the daytime sky. That is literally exposing the Moon to the light, exposing all that the Moon represents to consciousness. At the same time, retrograde Mercury is visible again and within a few days will be stationing direct in latter Leo. When it begins moving forward, Mercury will cover the same ground a third time, but this will be in plain sight, bringing that territory to awareness.

The Sun’s ingress from Leo to Virgo is a developmental step repeated every year. It represents an evolution from asserting the self to a focus on quality relations. As befits an Earth sign, the Sun in Virgo is a constructive process, building on what has come immediately before. As is appropriate to a mutable sign, the purpose of its development is to prepare for a new paradigm. The assertion of sacred personal space that the Sun enjoyed in Leo is not abandoned. It is formalized with boundaries.

As symbolized by the simultaneous emergence of both Mercury and Moon into the daylight, construction of these boundaries begins by becoming conscious of our thoughts and feelings. Expressing to others what was once personal to you will help others identify with and relate to what you’re saying. A foundation is created. The needs, expressions and finally, the stabilized structure of one’s self with boundaries can be known. And from that foundation, something can be built.

Learning what that something is and how it will turn out is the objective of the Sun’s trip  through Virgo. Watching the Moon and Mercury tells us that it is important to go along on that journey. Watching the Sun and being conscious of the light from one day to the next will gradually inform us, far more than words can, about the significance of the destination. Turn your attention out, behold the simple progress of each day and you will be prepared.

  1. Love You Burning,

although today is supposed to be 108F degrees, although cooler air DID come in ; a storm came in last early evening and blew a lot of trees down- the power just came back on. after going to bed early, I was just outside stargazing on one side of the sky and watching and listening to a thunderstorm on the other side…cool but weird!

dark mary: you’re welcome, that morning was pretty special. thank you for your prose/poem.

    peace All.

  2. Behold. Yes, Stellium in Sag! Behold, behold. Thank you for your beautiful energy. What it is it about the turning of the season? This morning I am on the verge of tears for no reason. Allergies? The morning’s thunderstorm? A homecoming? Some vague sense of relief?

    ANNUNCIATION

Even if I don’t see it again — nor ever feel it I know it is — and that if once it hailed me it ever does —

And so it is myself I want to turn in that direction not as towards a place, but it was a tilting within myself,

as one turns a mirror to flash the light to where it isn’t — I was blinded like that — and swam in what shone at me

only able to endure it by being no one and so specifically myself I thought I’d die from being loved like that.

  8. Hey Len,

This sounds like the end of vacation and going back to school. Sheez! Not fun at all. Crack those books and get to work! No more hanging out at the pool and acting the fool. No sir-ee bob, you are here to learn.

Just teasing Len, this is a cool way to look at Sun in Virgo, and actually school can be lots of fun, depending on your teachers and who you make friends with. Wish you had explained this to me when I was in the 6th grade! Thanks for the leg up on this transition business.
