The Moon conjoins with the Leo Sun on Saturday at about 2:40 in the afternoon EDT. That, by definition, is a New Moon. It and its symbolic message come at a good time. There has been more than enough stress to go around lately. A lot of people are feeling helpless. An even greater number people are in pain. Most of all, there is fear and uncertainty. None of those things are new and they have nothing to do with things that are. This particular conjunction of the luminaries, more than any in recent memory, perhaps more than any before, is a symbolic reminder of one simple fact. If the objects in our sky can start over, we can see them as archetypes of our own action and timing and see our own way clear to do the same.
A conjunction is exact when two objects occupy the same degree of the zodiac; that is, the same spot along the wheel. It is probably the most fundamental aspect in astrology. There are three things to remember about all conjunctions. First, it is the beginning of a new cycle.
The archetypes of astrology appear to move at different speeds. The most fundamental examples are the two brightest, biggest lights in our sky. Sol takes a year to complete a circuit of the signs. It takes about a month for Luna to do the same. Therefore, every 29 days or so, the Moon overtakes the Sun just like the minute hand on an analog clock periodically laps the hour hand and is, in turn, regularly overtaken by the second hand. The moment of catching up is the beginning of a new cycle. Symbolically, everything that transpired since the previous conjunction is brought to closure so that something new can begin.
That does not mean that what happened in the previous cycle is destroyed. It does mean that it is left behind, relegated to what was. When heeded, the cycles that begin and end with astrological conjunctions are an opportunity to do the same. It is as simple as flipping the page on a calendar or changing to a new one altogether.
The second thing to remember about conjunctions is that they represent a symbolic merger of energy. In the words of astrologer Robert Hand, the Sun is quite simply “light, consciousness and day.” It is so simple, we take it for granted. The profound fact is that everything we are and everything we do, including astrology, begins with the source of energy at the center of our solar system.
The Moon compliments the Sun, literally and symbolically. Luna’s gravity stabilizes our planet as we orbit the Sun and that allows our solar cycles to be regular and consistent. We associate the Moon with night because that is when we see it most commonly and most plainly. It is therefore a symbol of darkness, dreams and unconscious, of times when we feel more than we can see, of times when our thoughts turn inward to reflect.
The New Moon, therefore, merges the luminary archetypes. Luna is one with the solar luminescence for a few days, not seen as separate. This provides us with an opportunity to bring what was in the dark into the light for examination. We also have the chance to reflect on our conscious actions of the previous cycle. By bringing our inside and outside to a common center we can indeed feel as one, refreshed and new.
The final thing to remember about conjunctions is that the two or more objects involved are so close together as to deny the type of perspective that comes from separation. It is in that characteristic that this particular New Moon can be distinguished. More to the point, it is where we distinguish ourselves by bringing perspective to the table ourselves.
This is the newest of New Moons we have had for quite a while. It is the first luminary conjunction that is not also a solar eclipse since the beginning of May. It’s been that long since Sun and Moon have come together without Luna blocking at least part of Sol’s light. It’s been that long since astrology’s fundamental new beginning has not carried extra baggage. It is for us to be consciousness of that and not bring the old luggage forward.
Astrology is not destiny, it is opportunity. It is like a clock or a calendar, it is best used as your tool and you are least served when you are its tool. It does not mean that we will be able to avoid dealing with the realities of our lives. It does mean that we are not slaves to what our lives have been, on prior days, in previous cycles, during what was. This Leo New Moon is best kept simple just like that.

Many thanks to all for the kind and generous comments.
be: Thank you for the link to the Earth-Trojan asteroid, 2010 TK7. It should be noted that we do not have an ephemeris for this object yet because the perturbations in its orbital motion are exceedingly complex.
Gary: Thank you for the reminder of one way New and Full Moons are symmetrically related. As you have noted before, we can look forward to the Leo Full Moon being high in the sky.
just had to re-log in and realized for the first time just how long I’ve been coming here to chat. thank you all so much for that.
Len, thanks for “keeping it simple”. The beauty in your message today was just that.
Be, thanks for sharing your story. And I do hope that was all good health news for you too.
I haven’t tracked the astrology to events; but I’ll say this: a recurring dream that placed me inside a house with a dark/scary/tunnel-closet that generally contained objects from the past and a whole lot of terror – said recurring dream now has me out-of-doors and looking into remnants of said closet/tunnel from the other side, but not really interested in it anymore as there is yet undefined but probably interesting activity going on out t/here…..
Ah! Letting go of baggage indeed.

Asteroid 2010 TK7 is apparently in our blind spot which you spoke of recently Len. Judging by it’s name I suppose it was discovered last year, but I only heard of it in an interview with Mike Brown tonight on the PBS Newshour. It is the first Trojan discovered in Earth’s orbit. There’s an article about it online in the journal, Nature and here is a story from PBS which has a link to it I believe.

We are in synch today Len. Yesterday I met a new assistant in the doctors office and she was telling me about losing over 40 lbs. since Memorial Day. (I had only lost 4 lbs since previous visit, but never mind). She moved me to the next room to take my BP and that’s when I found out her birthday was this Sunday! (and that my BP had dropped considerably since last visit). I mentioned my conversation with her to my doc later and he was curious as to how much she had lost, saying he felt bad that he had asked her to bring him a cookie, compliments of the drug rep (they still do that!), as he whipped out my lab work sheet. My glucose reading was lower than 6 months ago, but even with all that good news, what I found out when I got home was even more cool than that.
This young lady started her diet when the Moon was conjunct her Moon for the 2nd time in that month of May. Furthermore, that day Mars was conjunct her north node. Even more amazing (for non-believers in astrology that is) that last New Moon in May, the one before the 2 partial solar eclipses? That New Moon in Taurus was in the same degree that the Memorial Day Mars was in. . .the one that was conjunct her NN, and it was also square her Leo Sun!
So yes, she’s not carrying that extra baggage anymore. And it’s also quite true about Luna’s gravity stabilizing our planet as we orbit the Sun, although some might take that as an oxymoron, for even with all her moods she is a necessity in the ever challenging goal to maintain balance. As for New Moons giving us a chance to reflect on our conscious actions of the previous cycle, well won’t that young lady have a very nice birthday!

Thank you so much for such a clear reminder. I’ve been lugging some unnecessary baggage around for a while now. It is time, simply, to set it down and continue on. New moon blessings, everyone!
Yes. Totally agree with Carrie. Your words have lifted a heavy heart. Thank you Len xx
Thanks Len for shining this ray of light and hope during this time of stress (and as you mentioned, a feeling of helplessness). You are always such a source of inspiration and light for all of us.
Great Job Len. Here’s to collecting new baggage after the New Moon -the kind that is worth hauling around. If only for 6 months till the Full Moon in Leo anyway. Cheers!
