I said that to my Chief of Deep Background Research, and she replied:
It’s worse. They’re paying tax on what they earn but they’re not receiving what they earn, and the banks clean up yet again. And guess what: food stamps are now the same thing, a debit card, with charges. So not only are you poor, you pay double for being so. Student aid does the same thing except I think there was enough stink about it that students can opt out and have direct deposit.

My first thought is a return to getting paid with credit at the company store. Not far off.
