Ballot Initiatives: The Idiot Amendment and More

Dear Friend and Reader,

Just a quick point in the direction of a TIME article that outlines very clearly and concisely all the major ballot initiatives and their results from the Tuesday vote.

The editorial team is currently working on the Friday edition which will be available to subscribers ofВ Planet Waves Astrology News, our weekly edition. Eric wrote a truly uplifting article, reflecting on this week’s history-making election and examining what it means for us as a nation.В

Judith Gayle, who features on this page and predominately on her Planet Waves blog, Political Waves, also contributes with her unique and insightful political analysis. Here’s a clip from her Friday article:

This isn’t just a four-year political victory, nor an eight. Not just a changing of the guard, a shifting of political parties. A sobbing friend called on election night to say it was two hundred years coming — I would suggest even longer than that. This was an unprecedented silencing of tribal drums.

The schism that has divided our nation in this latest flurry of culture war was born in the hippie era, the Vietnam days. John McCain ran his campaign on that thread of energy. His buzzwords — socialism, wealth-sharing, terrorist — didn’t find a niche in the majority’s consciousness. Those words were potent in the past; but the collective was ready to step into the future. You can literally scare some people to death, but we get tired of having our adrenal glands overloaded eventually. McCain’s rhetoric was about four years too late; we were finally ready for change.

Reality won a big victory but it came to us wrapped in echoes of the past; after such a review, perhaps now we won’t be destined to repeat it. This was an election season of firsts in too many ways to count: a man of color, powerful women, the oldest candidate and more money spent than seems reasonable to a world now eyeing its dwindling resources. It spoke to hope for the future, yet it was woven through with threads from the 60s: not just the 1960s but the 1860s as well.

The weekly horoscope is also included in the Friday edition, and it’s written by Eric. We also send out three monthly horoscopes with unique styles (Planet Waves Monthly, Inner Space and the Eriscope) and a sign-specific birthday report. These are part of our Tuesday editions.

As always, we offer astrology with a journalist’s eye and a sex-positive mindset. Planet Waves is the only place to get this from writers with a penchant — and a skill-set — for all of the above.

An annual subscription costs $7.33/month. Check out your options here, and for those of you who are already subscribed — we’ll see you in the morning.

  1. Oh… did anyone else hear this? apparently the Mormons are about to get sparked for sending their troops over the state line and funding up to 80% of the ads for the ballot initiative.

hmm… something about a church/state firewall? not to mention interfering with state sovereignty. Might it get thrown out from that breach alone?

  2. Karla – oh how sad. Even the warden asked for mercy on her behalf. Bush laughed about her pleading for mercy and even the most hardened were shocked by his response. There will be a reckoning.

  3. Gardner… yeah, that’d’ve been one Karla Faye Tucker, distantly related to my godmother, Peggy Faye Tucker. He did himself proud with that execution. Most of us simply could not get over Bush’s mimicking KFT in the last hours of her life.

The fact that he got elected made me wonder if he wasn’t Adolf the H. working out some peculiar, incestuous relationship with his nemesis, the USA.

Unlike my encounter with the Obama/Gaitan Imago, that one *is* sheer speculation… but trust me, stranger things have happened.

  4. G, damn, that’s kinda harsh…. I’m actually laughing my ass off imagining cattle roping Bush and Cheney…. Good fucking times eh’!!! Some folk need the reality. Shit, it sucks that some folk die for senseless garbage reasons, and then some get away with totally heinous crimes toward “THE LIGHT WE PRODUCE”. You know what, all I’ve got to say is fuck “THEM”, I YOU, US, …… we’re the shit. We’re the 1’s. And….. I will yoke the facet of will… Just long enough to smile, very large, laugh my ass off and get the hell out if the way.

Oh shit! Was I about (or at least attempting) to make conversation?!! I’m not sure after all the ..??!!

    Jere, enjoyin’ myself 🙂

  5. Hey Mystes,

I still think about governor bush not forgiving the woman in Texas who committed murder, repented, was converted to Christianity, and asked forgiveness. I don’t remember her name, but she was in the news quite a lot up until she was executed, and she was clearly a changed person from the one who committed the murder. There was no reason to not allow her to spend the rest of her life in prison, working with her ministry.

My mom always said that Ronald Reagan lost his mind because of the way he did Jimmy Carter. The Carters had to leave the White House by the back door, and Reagan’s people negotiated for the Iranian hostages to be released after he went into office. I think that John McCain was always honorable so yeah, I’d clean his hiney if he was in the nursing home. Nixon was another who was shamed out of office, and….I think a day of reckoning still awaits Pres. Bush, but I pray for mercy on all of us and him too. We need to heal now.

  6. allright Myst, can’t… quite… let… go… 🙂
“I could expand upon “flesh” as metaphor denoting psychological, spiritual “matter”: fear, attachment, belief, on and on and on….” I should have thrown in (as opposed to on and on and on), love, peace, happiness, bliss, desire, pain…. and all the other cool shit we get to experience on these planes of existence. Our bodies are fab instruments of experiential conciousness, I’ve begun to realize the transcendental beauty of mine own, AND even “beyond”! There are tools (in language) that I’ve realized to utilize in speaking/conveying/communicating with (as far as words) that allow me to be understood to the “perhaps close” degree. Words have always seemed to fail me (or I them?) but, I’m here, with about 7 billion other humans, kickin’ it, sayin’ hey, and LOVING it when they give me the “dude, check your freakin’ words!” I truly appreciate the input! I don’t see it as picking on, that’s silly, in fact I probably learn quicker through adversity (of course that could be total bullshit but, I wouldn’t know!) So continue spreading that wealth beautiful!

Fluidity, ALWAYS speak your mind! Always appreciated. Fuck the vibes man (my language is gender neutral, I call everyone dude, man, guy, love, and sister when I really want to throw it, only if it’s male [you watch their brains reboot]), if you can kick it with some relatively intense CONVERSATION (2-way), then by all means spill it! It keeps the blood/soul flowin’ through the “flesh”/UNIVERSE!

Right on, think I got it out…..

    Oh wait….

    Love is good…

peace is good…. (oh shit!, good and bad are not inherent, but thinking makes them so!)

    Love you all,

    Jere

  7. fluidity: this… “but seriously, the big financial companies are вЂ?investing’ in obama 3:1 over mccain”

My guess is that McCain was promised the candidacy as a ‘bone’ to keep him in line over the last 4 years, with the Bush/Cheney machine knowing full-well that Reps wouldn’t be able to hold back the populist tide.

Here’s another wild speculation: The decision by these powers to withhold support from McCain lines right up with W’s nasty, nasty nature. Seriously, the guy has a big mean streak, something we saw first hand here in Austin for 6 years before he took the Whitehouse. What Gardener said about people not being worthy of wiping JM’s hiney… well, I wouldn’t go that far, but McCain did put up some stiff opposition to the constitutional shredder that was set loose in the 2001/2002. W has a long, vicious memory, and no real reason not to be an asshole.

    I’m just sayin’…

  8. Jlo… I apologize if it seemed like I was picking on you… I forgot to throw my arm around Gardener too, for her ease with the lightmind/darkflesh correspondences. (See, now I’ve gone and implicated *both* of you. Share the wealth, I always say. ) But when you say this. . .

“I could expand upon “flesh” as metaphor denoting psychological, spiritual “matter”: fear, attachment, belief, on and on and on….”

. . .that is *precisely* what I am speaking to. The propensity to align the carnal aspect of our experience with the, ummm, let’s call it “dispiriting” parts of our experience. Even my kid hath been bit by the Cartesian bug what seeks to split us down that line.

The real body, the untrammelled body is a wholly different beast than we are accustomed to taking to the doctor. I honestly think that part of the Big Shift we are lining up to effect has to do with a vast seachange in the understanding of our own (ahem) Rahm.

    ***
And jere, honey, you write like a house on fire. Just keep looking at your words, pattern them according to your Need to Know. Tug the thread until you see how they ravel so that light and air pass through them.

    Same with the body.

  9. sorry for (possibly) putting some dampers on some peoples vibes. although it may be that i’m just stimulating more fuzzy white love light to come out.

i truly hope this isn’t the type of light that let’s all the negative sit around in the shadows where it isn’t seen and/or heard about

i would hope that people don’t just see the ‘positive’, but see the whole picture (there is negative too isn’t there or are we all just one big happy good family?) i’m using ‘negative’ because i guess ‘dark’ was the wrong word, dark is fine by me

but seriously, the big financial companies are ‘investing’ in obama 3:1 over mccain, i would say that they probably are smart in thinking they will be getting some pay back on that money (financial companies made up 3 of the top 7 donors to obama) (‘retired’ was the biggest industry contributor overall, whatever that means)

the war profiteers love obama from what i heard, he will be making them a ton of money.

but maybe it isn’t really an intelligent thing to bring up that maybe there wasn’t a whole lot of difference between mccain and obama (except for the colour thing, which is truly significant but isn’t everything) and that this isn’t going to bring about much of a truly transformative change (or maybe it is and we just have to believe it will and not talk about anything else or else we’ll jinx it?)

i would rather see everyone who got so excited that electing obama will bring about true positive change, all those people to actually go out and start taking some action that will lead to change, something that they actually do, then i will get excited.

but if everyone voted and now they’re ready to watch everything change without participating (and not just spectating) then i would think we’re in for more of the same (wars, financial house of cards, and other things which, yes, it would be nicer not to talk about) but i am truly scared of a people ‘united’ behind obama going into yet another of america’s wars (will it be pakistan this time? russia?) while still not having pulled out of either of the official ones it’s fighting now

  10. Myst, perhaps I should tighten up my words, or perhaps lengthen them (although that would probably take a lifetime, hmm, I think that’s where I’m at). I could expand upon “flesh” as metaphor denoting psychological, spiritual “matter”: fear, attachment, belief, on and on and on…. The light, dark, high, low, NOTHING is more, or less PERFECT than any other, an infinite point on the wheel. We are the star AND the “flesh”. Triangulating, calculating in infinitely perfectly pointless ways. It’s all just good fun!
We’re all and all is part (damned ridiculous paradoxes!).
Thanks for entertaining my trip through honing my verbal skills, (I still suck 😉 , but I truly am having a blast! It all still just swims through my head, (soul, being, flesh), overcoming the atrophy of those faculties IS a process, shit, I’ve got space! It would be so much easier with concious mastery of the “melding” process, but that will take me a bit (or maybe not?!).

    Definitely Love

  11. Hi fluidity:

You can think about anything you want. My suggestion was to be careful with your thoughts. We don’t know the future, not a single thing about it. Piecing bits of wrong information together with string to make our next President into a fascist seems like a waste of time to me. I’m not saying Barack Obama definitely *will not* be hit with a bolt of green lightning and transform into a bloodthirsty czar who eats brains, but you just can’t allow *all* the possibilities to keep you up at night.

I should tell you that banking firms give lots of money to every top candidate in each election. The percentage difference between candidates is not because the “bankers” have chosen the next President; it’s a bet. They’ll give the most money to the person they think will win, because this is the tribute system in Washington.

You can read all about that here, with all amounts, disclosures and top contributors in the most recent elections, I think at least back to 2000:

    http://www.opensecrets.org/pres08/index.php?cycle=2008

🙂 So you see it is a matter of public record. It does not at all support your assertion that Barack Obama has been chosen by the bankers as their Henchman of Evil. Is that what you needed from this conversation?

  12. Dear cryptognostics –

jlo, I’m talkin’ about this: “Maybe the “dark side” is that he’s got flesh wrapped around that blazing-light soul of his? Maybe “that’s” the “darkside” in/of us all?” and “our own soul work (shining through that flesh).”

Flesh *is* Word. Despite the biblical poetry on this, it doesn’t have to be ‘made’ word, only unmade a bit from the curse of our fear…

I just sighed a little when my remarks about the Waters, Salt and Energy were heard as a call to ‘healing’ the body; when properly untrammelled the physique vibrates like a cloud full of rain.

There’s nothing really dark about the Dark once you learn to see *with* it. That skill comes from the Body. Your *r*e*a*l body. Find it.

    All love,

    M

  13. Maybe the “dark side” is that he’s got flesh wrapped around that blazing-light soul of his? Maybe “that’s” the “darkside” in/of us all?
I’m lacking cogency on languaging this one here but, projection of hopes and dreams, as well as idealism, can be quite positive attributes. They can be used as tools to “recognise” others, therefore allowing us to become aware of “ourselves”, and in that being able to activate our own volition to accomplish our own soul work (shining through that flesh). Besides, I’d take hopes, dreams, and idealism any day over fear paranoia and disparity! It just plain “feels” better! 🙂

    Lotsa Love my beautiful friends

  14. ps: so what is the dark side of Obama? have people thought about that, looked at that, or is it all just projection of peoples hopes and dreams onto this ‘ideal’ candidate? if it’s the latter, well we might want to start thinking a bit differently

  15. janesdefense:

i didn’t get any of what i posted from the internet (except for the popular vote percentages, and i’m not too worried about that) so i’m not exactly sure what you’re talking about

if it is about that Obama received major financial backing from the financial industry (goldman sachs et al) i would be a bit worried if the response to that was to say, well we can’t know for sure so don’t think about it. i would think that would be something that is fairly public record, and for someone who is familiar with investigative journalism, probably pretty easy to investigate and report back on (dont’ they have to disclose where they get their campaign money from? aren’t there rules about that?)

wouldn’t it be better to know if he is the guy backed by the financial elites to run the country? wouldn’t it give us a pretty good idea of what he might be ready to do in terms of financial policy (bailouts and the like?). he already did vote for the bailout, twice, didn’t he? or maybe that’s just internet rumour that we shouldn’t think about(?)

  16. ~Janes… This isn’t going to answer your question, but Gaitan’s murder was too seminal to waste. Garcia-Marquez saw the body – became who he is in that moment. Castro saw the body, decided that ‘peaceful revolution’ against Batista wasn’t gonna cut it.

There were many, many more effects. I might mention that when I had the stroke, it was about 7 years before I decided to study Colombian politics/art.

The answer has to do with what I do, and it really doesn’t fit into text. I can speak the results, but only stammer when it comes to how it is Seen.

But here’s a clue: Om Ah Vajra Darshe Hum.

  17. fluidity:

I think this is a good time to be careful with our thoughts. The internet is just writhing with scenarios and warnings, from the Amero to Lizard People to a twenty-lane highway running from Mexico City to Chicago, a White House coup, Obama being backed financially by every nonwhite population in the whole world, a planned reissue of the currency, an Obama assassination as the political theatre that brings us under the thumb of the Shadow Dictatorship and this is in addition to all the old predictions like the end of the world and the Collapse of the Empire and on and on and ON.

Uranus likes surprises. It’s pointless to try to guess the future based on internet postings.

    mystes:

That’s a very intriguing idea. What makes you think this?

    ~j

  18. ~fluidity…

I appreciate your comments about Obama and the rise of populism (fascism is its dark twin). Mr. O will carry that signature in part because of his immediate pre-carnation. I am almost 100% sure his last gig was as the charismatic leader (and presidential candidate) Jorge E. Gaitan, who was shot dead on the streets of Bogota on April 9, 1948.

(I am *deeply* karmically connected to that whole mess, as I commemorated that date by having my first and only stroke on that day 25 years later. And perhaps I have mentioned: my degrees are in Latin American Studies, Colombia/Mexican focus.)

This goes to the whole question of Colombia performing a very specific role in pushing forward the karma of this hemisphere. I noted the similarities in the basic existential signature between those two (Obama/Gaitan) about a year ago. As I watched McCain head for Colombia in July, Betancourt’s release and the sudden outing of deathsquads on the Colombian gvt payroll in the last 30 days, I thought, ‘hmmmm… here we go.’

Your concern *is* rooted in reality, but the ‘fascist’ energy comes in through a door hidden behind an acute angle, scarcely in our ‘political’ picture: through the nasty mess from the Colombian assassination’s resultant Violencia… sixty years and counting.

Obama’s not a god, but he is not just any old human. He’s enabled to pull together a number of potentials and bring them into a new framework. A bunch of us are being called in to keep the edges of this thing steady-as-she-blows while he gets settled. Hang on, it isn’t really interesting yet…

    Love and more,

    M

  19. careful Judith and everyone who is so hyped about Obama, and what it means

i heard a guy on the (community) radio station yesterday, who seemed to have a good analysis and was warning about the rise of fascism, and how we need to keep from thinking in the view that fascism is just bush and cheney … he was saying how fascism must have a grassroots, from the bottom up popularity for it to really come into being, and that is kind of what has happened here … fascism starts with ‘revolutionary’ appeal and can just as often be ‘leftist’ as ‘rightist’, he gave the example of mussolini who was apparently very left-wing as he rose up with peoples support.

and as Eric has noted, one component of fascism is the govt/economic tying together – so don’t forget Obama is the bankers’ pick, he’s been ‘bought’ already, by Goldman Sachs etc, so don’t forget that’s where he got all his campaign money from

and also don’t forget, that the vote wasn’t such a huge tide towards Obama, there is still a huge split in America, what was it, 53% to 46% ? 7% of 130 million voters is less than 10 million, that’s not a huge difference in a population of over 300 million
