Weird New Moon

Dear Friend and Reader,

FOR AS FAR BACK as I can remember, this time of year has been special to me. As a child, I preferred Halloween over Christmas, and the smell of the hearth at my father and mother’s house still looms on the edge of the scent of jack-o-lanterns lit from within. Mid-Autumn is a space where time takes a break and weirdness fills the gap.

From the Twilight Zone episode: "The Eye of the Beholder."
From the Twilight Zone: "The Eye of the Beholder."

And I’m not really sure ifВ the scene outside of my daily routine: the economy (which frankly,В is a word I am even sick of sounding out in my brain before I type it), the elections and of course the events about to transpire in the universe, isВ making this time of year seem more charged, or if I’m getting used to the pattern, able to recognizeВ current eventsВ as a new dimensionВ to the choreography of the heavens.

This year is the first one where I will put in my vote for the President of the United States of America. It is the first time in ten years that I have cut my hair. Today was the first time a door opening behind me sent chills down my spine.

The world to me is gaining a slow momentum, as though far off in the distance there is a traveling carnival and we are expecting its arrival. The sky seems close, like a curtain that promises to lift and reveal a lit up theater. I am nervous; I remember the sudden pangs of excitement I would feel in my stomach as a little girl when the lights in theВ cinema would dim. It’s happening again. But this time, it’s more drawn out. How odd to have all of these events occur on the tail end of the yearly celebration of death and return!

But anyway, I’ll stop my musings in order to give you theВ the weirdest news story I’ve come across so far while the Sun and the Moon were in Scorpio together. Remember that Scorpio is the traditional ruler of the 8th house –В  the exchange of energy: transformation that has death as one of its components. Scorpio is aВ sign that suggests a state of constant movement, of uncomfortable combinations and of encounters with the worlds beyond. Looked at from another angle it’sВ about potential.В

BritishВ scienceВ hasВ found a new use for animals;В and in their efforts to discover a better medicine for the lengthening of human life, they’ve subjugated humanity to the level of a test subject with the approval of the British government. You see, it appears that a law has been passed to legalize the splicing of animal genes with human genes for stem cell research.В

Right now people have toВ be contentВ altering their bodies with piercings, scarification and tattoos. But now with science at the brink of an incredible breakthrough, we could have cat ears, tern wings, swan feathers and horse cocks to enhance our lives. The flesh we are born inВ could become even more unsatisfactory to us. Sometimes temptatation multiplies displeasure.

On the other hand, if you think humanity has the capacity to be terrible now, wait until you come across a stranger with retractable claws or a prehensile tail.

By the way, this project is called the Nephilim Ressurection Project.В Nephilim are human-angel crossbreeds, giants from long ago that were abominations andВ subsequently destroyed, according to Christian and Judiac belief. I wonder if the Nephimil part refers to the animal cells or the human cells.В В

I bring these things up because the quest for the sake of the quest is inherently in answer to an unsatisfaction with the world around us. A hunger that grows without being addressed, so that it presents itself as a worthy cause.В Looking up and out in the literal sense is a way to come in contact with the here and now. Look outside, smell the wind, hear the sparrows. But to look up and outwards with the lenses of intellect pointed towards how to make things better, what we find is polarization of good and evil. Naivete calcifies and makes the mind inflexible, yet capable of probing the farthest reaches of all the knowledge in the world.

What these experiments are about is the quest to stave off Death for another day. However, without inviting Death into Life, the balance is incomplete. Life’s quality diminishes.

Has anyone out there ever seen that episode of the Twilight Zone, “The Eye of the Beholder,” where the womanВ wakes up from surgery andВ all of the doctors surrounding her have pig faces?В Well that episode was basically about what is normal and what is not. The whole moral to the fable was that finally, it is up to each of us to decide what beautiful means.

As I have mentioned before (and which I will most likely bring up again because I am infatuated by the word) something is weird in the true sense, when you feel like a bell has tolled far off in the distance after you have witnessed it. It’sВ heavy and as unmistakeable as an encounter with Beauty.

I will leave it at that.

Merry Met,

Genevieve Sophia

  1. Gentle G,

I just finished the first poem I have actually written in more than a decade. Kind of an odd form, part free-verse, part prose-poem (I don’t use the word ‘proem’ {{shudder}}). It has the properly endarkened October/November feel to it, as we head into the cross-quarter and all of the eerie turns (say that outloud) of this period.

I’ve been reminded that our instinctual, brain-stem four “F”s -flight/feeding/fucking/fighting- are rooted in what in Buddhism is called the First Obstruction: Fear. This is my season to work directly with that root and transform it.

I see in each of our hands a spindle, a scissor, a comb, a charm. Everything that comes in the next few days will be a gift, albeit perhaps hard to recognize at first.

    Awake and here…

  2. We DO insist on “playing God”, don’t we?

Isn’t that why Lucifer got kicked out of His’n’Her’s Grace?

I, for one, prefer to look for meaning in these tales-as-old-as-“time”. There is a reason we’ve been telling and re-telling them for centuries.

BTW – on “not voting for the past ten years”. Last election I ALMOST voted for Bush just because I felt it was better to GIVE HIM my vote than allow him to steal it a second time. LOL.
