I love the smell of tear gas in the morning. Well, not LOVE exactly, but reading about attempts to curtail and confine the Occupy movement across the country — most particularly in Oakland — sure brings back memories. Of course, back in the day, the establishment had yet to figure out how to render protesters deaf, dumb and moot with “kettling,” a herding maneuver that produced the holding debacle known as ‘Guantanamo on the Hudson’ during the 2004 Republican National Convention. Protesters were corralled out of earshot and eyesight of the event itself, with more than a hundred detained in wet and miserable conditions on New York’s Pier 57. Millions in reparations were eventually paid by the state of New York. Many believe we saw a redux of that maneuver on the Brooklyn Bridge at the beginning of the month, with more than 700 purposely directed into an illegal area where they were sure to be arrested. A class action suit has been filed.
This kind of crowd control was developed by authorities to handle the random outbreaks that protesting citizens have so rarely participated in these last few decades. At the end of the last century, occasional outbursts seemed to startle the establishment, which had been lulled by a population gone listless and compliant. As the public mostly disapproved of group activities that mainstream media described as mob-like, cop shops and city governments felt free to make short work of dissent. Keeping a lid on dissenters was a primary goal of government even before Homeland Security became touchstone for all national threats and increased the public sector by hundreds of thousands of employees.
According to a Kindle offering by Will Bunch, entitled October 1, 2011: The Battle of the Brooklyn Bridge:
The trend actually began after 1999, when chaotic street protests against a World Trade Organization confab in Seattle rocked the Establishment; police departments responded with widespread use of a tactic called “kettling,” in which a blue wall of law-enforcement officers will surround a large group of protesters and let them boil in an enclosed “kettle” for hours; sometimes the demonstrators are arrested, and sometimes they are merely deprived of their freedom to move about. Either way, the goal is through discomfort (i.e., lack of food or opportunity to use a bathroom) and frustration to not only quell a current protest but to make citizens think twice about taking to the streets in the future — regardless of what it says in the Bill of Rights.
It’s astounding to me that so many people seem shocked that the police, representing a hyper-sensitive establishment, are quick on the trigger to use extreme force against perceived threats to authority. During Bush’s tenure, for instance, we constantly heard about approved corridors, holding stations and a no-nonsense approach to protests. The Bushies were extremely vindictive, arresting people for t-shirts they disapproved at public meetings and going after employees for bumper stickers. Leftie voices raised in complaint were uniformly ignored.
So this level of aggression doesn’t surprise or even particularly upset me, given the unchanging nature of the beast and its historical predictability, although the critical wounding of an Iraq Vet in Oakland is dismaying. What does piss me off is that not only are we funding this abusive behavior with our tax dollars, but there wasn’t a hint of this kind of activity at the Tea Party protests, not even a whiff of disapproval as participants went around showing off their guns and waving placards only a white supremacist could love. That is another indicator of the imbalance — political, social, financial — that we endure today.
Van Jones writes of the Oakland crackdown:
The Occupy movement is powerful, not because it is fighting for the rights of a few hundred people to sleep outdoors, but because it is fighting for the right of millions of Americans to sleep indoors. These excessive responses from law enforcement, from Atlanta to Oakland, not only violate the law, but take our collective eye away from the economic violence occurring daily in this country.
As the Occupy movement continues to pick up steam and credibility, the Republican leadership and pundits are quick to cry “class war.” Who do those rough, dirty street people think they are, attacking the well-bred and wealthy? They must all be lefties, of course, because no self-respecting conservative would be out there, attacking the “job creators.”
The sheer hypocrisy of class war accusations from the right should have been put in perspective when Warren Buffet affirmed that there WAS a class war going on and that HIS class — the super rich — was winning it. But never ever EVER expect a Republican operative to tuck in its tail in shame or pull back from absurd rhetoric; it simply isn’t in them.
The hysteria caused by rumors of class war has been an effective tool to fall back on for years, although it now appears to be a tactic that’s lost its bite. Anyone with a brain knows we’re deeply in class war, with 1% looking down on 99%, looking in. And I don’t think the Pubs understand that it’s no longer easy to divide the political camps when so MANY of us are suffering.
Meanwhile, the 99% are being joined by all those who are waking to the hopelessness of allowing the moneyed their recklessness. Public service workers, teachers, firemen and even cops have joined the protests, aware that the system is broken, that the bullies in the playground are stealing everyone’s lunch money, and that if WE don’t make it stop, no one else will. Mayors and city governments identify with the 99%. All colors and creeds recognize themselves as victimized for the good of a powerful few. Faithful America, a liberal non-denominational group I follow, offered a free bumper sticker that said, “Jesus is with the 99%.” Can I get an amen?
Even Mitt Romney was with the 99% for about fifteen minutes, and, as an aside, that’s something to take a closer look at. John Kerry lost an entire election over accusations of “flip-flopping” while Mitt’s numbers have stayed steady in the mid-20 range for two election campaigns. This is because Republicans constantly flip-flop. When they’re out of power, they’re against all the things they were for when IN power. It can’t get much more obvious, can it? And the very transparency we’re talking about, new to the sleepy-heads but old business to those of us holding the banners? THAT’s the gift that will keep on giving. Who among us can miss the constant drip-drip-drip of corruption and collusion and power, bought and paid for. We’ve ALL sustained enough pain and instability to no longer comfortably doze through our troubles here on planet Terra. What is obvious must finally be dealt with.
Don’t try to convince your conservative friends that they are part of the 99%. If they’re FOX friends, they’re sure it’s those pesky Democrats, at it again, trying to kill capitalism, further socialism, and topple industry. They see no common interests with street rabble: hippies and unemployed loafers and hand-in-their-pocket welfare cases. Why, there are reports that [long disbanded] ACORN is involved in this! And safely ensconced high atop the canyons of lower Manhattan, the movers and shakers of finance comfort themselves that they are being deviled by scruffy know-nothings and anti-capitalist stooges who are no real threat without money or power.
To all but those locked in their ivory towers, it’s becoming more evident, moment by moment, that the 99% are protesting not business but corruption, plain and simple. Not corporations but corporations gone rogue. Not the rule of law but of laws gone biased and stilted, configured to enslave and impoverish the little guy for the benefit of the masters — and the farther up the food chain you travel, the more even the masters look like “little guys” to the overlords. Every time I see turtle-impersonator Mitch McConnell or mean-spirited Eric Cantor or cynical John Boehner on television, I wonder how they’ll fare when their influence dries up and their handlers are through with them. And where it stops, nobody knows — unless we, the people, stop them.
What is becoming obvious to all of us can’t continue to survive the scrutiny of light. The scoundrels will be identified by their arrogance and inability to hear the voices calling up to them. And in these days of cell phone cameras and YouTube there aren’t nearly as many dark crannies for them to hide in. The tweets and the videos that drove the Arab Spring forward are making the American Autumn an equally visceral phenomenon, witnessed by millions across the globe, should they care to join in virtually.
So far, city mayors are swinging wide on these protests. Not all are cracking down and in fact, some are making the process easier with their cooperation. In other areas, police are [resisting pressure] to make quick or frivolous arrests, but as the protesters “wear out their welcome,” as one pundit put it, we’ll see where this goes. Most local authorities don’t want to be caught in the glare of public scrutiny, like Oakland Mayor Jean Quan, who has now backed away from the stun grenades, sound cannons and tear gas. Perhaps the threat of a general strike throughout the city gave her second thoughts, or maybe headlines profiling the police brutality visited upon a young veteran of Iraq was sobering enough to make her rethink her priorities.
We are at a turning point in this fledgling movement, and if it is to continue to grow, it will have to begin to see itself differently. Up until now, the organic flavor of the gathering to witness the American Dream gone dim has served to pull us together, from all our different corners. Now it must morph into something else, something more specific than the Tea Party with its complaints about taxes, or the Christocrats and their singular push to deny a woman’s right to choose. We must begin to see the inevitability of this moment: what we know is that we can no longer remain silent in the face of a corrupt system. It must, it will, change to meet the people’s needs, or it will not survive.
Neale Donald Walsch recently sent a message about “knowing.” This is one of my favorite
concepts, this mirror within a mirror within a mirror. Hang with it awhile, if it’s new to you, because getting past the judgments that accompany each level is incredibly freeing. Here is the crux of it:
A wonderful teacher once opened me to the awareness that there are those who…
…do not know, and do not know that they do not know.
…do not know, and know that they do not know.
…do not know, but think that they know.
…know, but do not know that they know.
…know, but pretend that they do not know.
…know, and know that they know. All of us fall into one of these six categories. So it is one thing to know, and another thing to know that you know.
Like everything else on this amazing journey we’re all taking, politics is spiritual in nature. It reflects our ethics, our understanding, our authenticity. There are things we know about this faltering system, the twisted policies that drive it, the people we’ve trusted who have failed us. For awhile, we knew, but didn’t know we knew. It was easier to pretend everything was all right. But now we know, don’t we? Now we know we know?
We will continue to peel back these layers to get a good look at what we have created so that it can be remediated in the name of the new Age we’re bringing into awareness. In the calm eye of this storm — the I of this storm — all of our fractured parts will come together, our voices will raise as one to build a bold and brilliant future. That’s what true (r)evolution looks like. When you really know, there’s no going back.

Thank you, dearhearts, for your response this week. I spent yesterday all day flying the friendly skies — and will be a month on the West Coast with those I love — so I’m a bit brain dead and body-weary yet and haven’t much to add at the moment. I’ll catch up with myself by next week for sure. Keep the faith!!
We know. We know we know. They* know we know. We know that they know we know. They don’t care that we know. They will continue to loot and ratchet down until we “NO!”
I’m reminded of that poster from the 1980s of the mouse flipping off the eagle swooping down on it. I’m not sure who is flipping off who right now, but I know I don’t like being flipped off by the same hand that is stealing from me and choking me.
So, what color shall #OWS be??? Meanwhile, time for me to get out the fine point Sharpie and mark all my currency.
Thanks, Judith, for another grounded article with directions and a map of where to proceed, and many thanks for the great comments on how and what to do on the way.

*”They” = the infamous 1%, the politicians, the corporations, et al
I was thinking about kettling, and how to defuse it. Kettling implies one demonstration that is manipulated into an area that the police designate. What if there are two demonstrations? One that is of a large enough size that the police begin to kettle it, then another begins, located away from the first, that swells up and is of a large enough size to cause a diversion away from the first by the police forces.
They’re thin on the ground and they know it. Spread them thin, keep it non-violent, and watch them go ape. Gandhi knew the Brits could never adequately control the Indian people in their masses, and he used sheer numbers to the people’s ultimate advantage and victory.
I think that eventually the police would just get tired and not want to bother any more. All that overtime is straining cities already, not to mention depriving needed rest periods for the officers, so this is all adding up to massive headaches for the other side.
Think it will work?
From Daily Kos:
Tens of Thousands Flooded Israel’s Streets Demanding Economic Justice for the 99% as #OWS Blooms+*
by The Troubadour Writing by David Harris Gershon
Chanting “We Are the 99 Percent” and “The People Demand Social Justice,” thousands of Israelis returned to the streets, mirroring this summer’s massive tent protests that helped to inspire #ows (and which were themselves inspired by Egypt’s encampment-based protests in Tahrir Square).
Tonight’s rallies, which happened all across Israel, will be followed next week by the nation’s first-ever citizen-led general strike on November 1, one day before Occupy Oakland will engage in a similar effort. Nearly 5,000 Israelis have already pledged to participate.
The numbers at tonight’s rallies appear to have been dampened by tragic events tonight, including rocket attacks on the southern part of the country (from Islamic Jihad in Gaza) that killed one Israeli and an Israeli bombing raid in Gaza that killed at least seven. And yet, remarkably, tens of thousand of protesters flooded the combined streets of Jerusalem, Kiryat Shmonah and Tel Aviv, as well as a number of other location around Israel.
In the midst of a tragic security situation, such numbers would never have marched before in Israel.
Things are changing.

Sefat: Top 10 ways OWS can Excel: Counsel from Iran’s Green Movement
Posted on 10/28/2011 by Juan
Kusha Sefat writes in a guest column for Informed Comment
Following the disputed Presidential election in Iran, our Western compatriots gave many suggestions on combating state oppression. Various tactics and strategies were devised for Iranian protesters, some on this very blog. It seems that most of those recommendations were ineffective within Iran’s particular social and political context. It may be worth outlining some of the tactics that were in fact useful to Iranian protesters particularly as the OWS movement kicks into high gear (assuming these tactics make sense within the American socio-political context). The following are the Top 10 most effective tactics for the OWS, stemming from the experience of mass social movement in Iran.
1) Pick a color to represent your movement and wear it daily in public places (work, restaurant, etc.). Remember, this is a numbers game. You want maximum visibility, and to bring your movement into everyday life.
2) Have an all-inclusive strategy. Accept people with different views who are willing to join you in protest. Contrary to popular belief, you don’t have to know what you want as a movement yet. The goal at this stage is to point to your opponents and say that they have been lying to you; that the show they have constructed is false and that you are sick of it.
3) Demonstrate peacefully. Committing violence during demonstrations leads to ruptures within your movement, diminishes public sympathy, and gives the security forces a reason to violently suppress your protest.
4) Be rigorous. Security forces, dressed as civilians, may commit public acts of violence in order to have an excuse to squash protests. Find footage of those that police accuses of acting violently. Make sure they are legitimate protestors. Expose them if they are not.
5) Be creative. During demonstrations in Iran, security forces dressed a male protester in female attire in a bid to embarrass him. The next day, hundreds of male protesters came out in female attire.
6) Record protests with your mobile phones and send to television stations. Many broadcasters are owned by the very people who are in the 1%. But every now and then, there are producers and news workers who are willing to get in trouble for showing the truth. This happened in Iran on many occasions. News websites have an e-mail address and they generally ask you to send them footage. Do IT.
7) Send your footage of acts of violence committed by the police to foreign television broadcasters like Al Jazeera, RT, etc. When they show the footage, it puts pressure on American broadcasters to do the same. (Iranian protestors used BBC very effectively, even though it is a British outlet).
8) Write, “I am 99%” or “OWS” on all dollar bills that you circulate. Remember, you are fighting on the plane of the symbolic, and cash circulates widely and quickly.
9) Do not let politicians co-opt your movement. Many politicians, domestic or not, may hope to use your movement to their advantage. Allow them to join your movement, but DO NOT let them lead or act as spokesperson.
10) Write arguments and op-eds that aim at the logic of the system that has robbed you of opportunities and comfort. Do not aim at a particular person. People can be replaced; it is the system that is hurting you.

Jude,
Speaking of a mirror within a mirror within a mirror, ever since we left the last day of the Mayan calendar (that would be yesterday when the Sun opposed Jupiter and sextiled Pluto), we entered the Twilight Zone. The Sun is now applying to a square with Neptune, both Mercury and Venus are too. Mars is applying to an opposition with Neptune and Saturn is applying to a trine to Neptune. Neptune will then station on Wednesday 11/9, there will be a full moon on the 10th, and you know what happens on 11/11/11.
It is a dream and it is going to morph, but it is no longer just the American Dream. Three. . two. . . one. . . when I clap my hands you will awake it will be a new world.

Thanks, as always, Judith, for an eloquent, inspiring and informative piece on the state of the union of #OWS.
I particularly was riveted by Van Jones’ use of the term “economic Violence” that the 99% have been experiencing.
“These excessive responses from law enforcement, from Atlanta to Oakland, not only violate the law, but take our collective eye away from the economic violence occurring daily in this country.”
Likewise Judith…”I love the smell of FRESH bullshit…” Tearing through it is the key!
I had quite a Uranian moment when I read your piece here in sleepy UK this morning!
We tend to look at music and football as our barometer of class, social, and financial divides! A footballer earning £200.000 can simply refuse to play! Left wing musical icons suddenly become fathers and do their laundry! There is also the small matter of the disintegration of The Euro as a currency that can sustain 27 countries equally. The Greeks have got a 50% right-off of their debt….Socrates talked them into it!
So I cast an eye over the Sibley chart. Your article…and the ongoing shift in U.S. identity … both internal …and by implication external….raised my antennae..in a moment!. For which I thank you mucho!
There is Uranus …to the minute…on the IC….Pluto is still approaching Natal Eris in the Capricorn 1st house…..and the Stellium of The Moon, Pholus, The Nodes, Ixion and Quaoar in the Sag 1st is playing absolute havoc with Mars in the Geminii 7th.
There is no visible trigger that would indicate a gear change….more a long term rumbling in the jungle…that will see the Mars in Virgo vacation next year demand a refinement of the purpose. Organically blessed….it should indeed let those who know they know … know how to welcome those who only know, to say No …big time!
Orcus transit of Virgo will…in the long term…. in opposition to the 3rd house Stellium of Quaoar, Pallas, Moon, Ceres, Nessus, and Sedna … help America find its Soul … and peoples of the world may yet see something to surpass the cultural explosion of the African American 20th century!
We have a program over here…”Who do you think you are…?”. Sarah Jessica Parker discovered her mother’s roots. The Hedges who arrived on the Mayflower…and went to California in 1849 as part of the Gold Rush….and The Elwells who were victims of The Salem Witch Hunts.
I was genuinely astonished to hear her say…
” It has totally changed the way I think of my self….I am an American…I am … an American!”
It seems to me…that the problem is…and always has been….. one’s sense of self!
The 99% do not need the Gun, the Bomb, or the War. It is the Pen, the Internet, awareness of Self and Others, and the Love of Life that can fix this one.
Get to your Sports channel and watch Chelsea-Arsenal when you can. T’is 4-3 as we speak. We Brits have become very like you Americans these last 40 years. Penetratingly sharp… and devastating in attack in front of goal…… but oh so inadequate in defence(Pun intended)…. they fall over like windswept bullrushes!!
5-3 to Arsenal…Chelsea are just too wealthy. It is the hunger that wins it…. every time!!
Big Love
Paul Hill
Yep, it is time. We know it’s time.
Time to take the great leap forward.

Yayz Judith, thanks once again for an inspiring piece of writing.
Much appreciated.
