Sun enters fixed Scorpio on Sunday at about 2:30 pm EDT. This extends and elaborates upon the season initiated when Sol entered cardinal Libra one month ago. It also adds to the growing number of objects in Scorpio. Most of all, the solar ingress to a water sign alters the environment of consciousness, asking us to grow into a new manner of understanding and navigating the world. In your life, the opening days of solar Scorpio will place an increasing imperative on sound and feeling, on both listening and being heard.
Astrology interprets objects in the sky as archetypes of objects and events in your life. In the case of Sun, that expression is both simple and profound. It is day, without which there would be no day. It is the primary source light in the physical world and at the root of light in the metaphysical sense. In abstract, Sun is consciousness, but even with that it is at once obvious and sublime. When you are working with solar astrology the trick is to be capable of integrating the sophisticated while continually differentiating the basic.
When an object moves from one sign to another, it is as if the archetype changes costume, altering the expression of its role in your life. After Sun enters Scorpio, therefore, its form will remain constant but its appearance will be different. On the physical level, the length of day and the frequency distribution of light will change. That will be an obvious, gradual and cumulative phenomena, continuing the trend started by the Libra equinox. On the abstract level of consciousness, the shift indicated by Sun’s transition to Scorpio will probably be more abrupt, of greater contrast and, paradoxically, more difficult to discern. That paradox can be accounted for by the Hellenistic element that makes Scorpio’s makeup, which is water.
Libra is an air sign; the element associated with Scorpio is water. Thus, the transition to solar Scorpio is, in many ways, the symbolic equivalent of moving into an aqueous existence. The rules are different when your physical body is in water. The same is true in allegory. In order to adjust to an aquatic environment, one must encounter contradiction and adapt. Part of that adaption is how consciousness maintains and expresses itself. Whether in or on water, both heeding and responding becomes a matter of receiving the light of consciousness with sound.
Sound usually travels over and through water with less interference and distortion than light does. That is because sound requires a material medium through which it can be propagated. Light, on the other hand is either reflected or refracted by matter. The more dense the matter, the more important sound becomes as a means of receiving and communicating information. The density of water is greater than that of air.
In astrology, the element water is connected with not only the means of communication but also the nature of information we are likely to be interested in. In addition to prioritizing auditory means, water also corresponds to an emphasis on the density associated with intuitive and emotional subject matter. Sun’s ingress to Scorpio thus represents a shift in both how we relate and in the nature of relationship. The subject of relationship was, of course, the focus of Libra. Now, Scorpio is taking up where Libra left off.
Libra introduced us to the principles of relationship. As an air sign, Libra emphasized objective clarity in ideals like balance, fairness, equanimity and reciprocation. All of those concepts are important to be conscious of when initiating relationship. In practice, however, it’s a two way street. Values encounter emotions. Ideas need to be compared and shared to have meaning outside our heads. Adjusting and adapting is how first principles are extended and elaborated in dense reality. That’s the opportunity of Scorpio.
Scorpio, like the element associated with it, can be viewed with trepidation. Wherever there is water, or its symbolic equivalents of density, intuition and emotion, the environment can get challenging or messy and it’s very possible to drown. Before exercising the choice to be repelled, however, consider the alternative. With no water, there is no life. If our lives are to go on, we must go on just as the Sun does, into a sonar season working with our ears and hearts wide open even if it means occasionally holding our breath.

Hello Len and all,
So good to back among you after weeks of preparation for the semi-annual visit from family followed by the good daughter/sister performance. I’m slooowly returning to my natural (and I mean that in a birds and trees way) existence, which feels like a returning to the surface of a deep lake, or waking from a nostalgic dream. Like you say Len, “values encounter emotions”.
Thank you Len, and thanks too to Hugging Scorpio for her words “hissing and stabbing at any hint of ripping us out of the ‘cave’ we love so much”. I’m not a Scorpio Sun person but Mercury rules my 4th house and it’s conjunct Pluto in my natal chart. After all these years you have given me a better understanding of how I relate to home and, being a native Crab I thought it must be a Cancer-thing. You are never too old to learn something new!

Thanks for the good advice for this Gemini/Libra Sun/ Moon who is surrounded by Scorpios. Open my heart and ears and (doesn’t one need to keep one’s mouth closed to) hold my breath.
Ah Len, this is just lovely…Whether in or on water, both heeding and responding becomes a matter of receiving the light of consciousness with sound.
This Sun/Moon Scorp can already feel the shift from air to water, and thankfully so. May I suggest to those stepping into the water world…have a listen to “Inside” by Moby. It will help with the flow!
Thanks Len
ah yes, beautiful Len. Thank you.
I truly love this part of year, not just because it’s my solar home. But that it offers others the opportunity to experience a greater depth of themselves. My experience is that not many like it though, and perhaps pausing here to recognize that, one can appreciate the Scorpio people around us who call this emotional intensity their home, and that it results in an often disproportionate time spent alone. It is just as much the work of a Scorpio to make relationship enjoyable and safe (albeit intense and passionate), as it is others’ work to take a “deep breath” as you amazingly put it and go along for the ride. Just as we Scorp’s need to do when we get all fixed and controlling, hissing and stabbing at any hint of ripping us out of the “cave” we love so much. 🙂
And so I say with all my heart that everyone feel love and peace and intense beauty in every aspect of our lives, with energy moving from the very bottom to the very top of our awareness, overflowing all around our self and ourselves, and our beautiful Earth which needs our healing more than ever.
Love and gratitude,
HS
Beautiful, Len. Thank you. xx
