I got curious the history of the word ‘occupy’ so I checked one of my favorite websites — Etymology Online by Douglas Harper. It has an interesting background, including being a euphemism for sex. Go figure. Meanwhile, the occupation of Zuccotti Park is still standing. Today’s planned ‘cleaning’ of the park was canceled after the Mayor and his Men decided that the protest was too strong to try to force out with the police. I think everything except “fuck” means sex, in most people’s minds, but congress definitely does. There is an excellent discussion of this topic under the “Forbidden Words” section of Eros Denied by Wayland Young — one of the books credited with starting the sexual revolution, published 1964.
