Monument Manifesto

Friday night in Portland, Maine, the monthly First Friday Art Walk met Occupy Maine. The General Assembly was taking place in Monument Square when I arrived, and tents are (for the next week or so, per the police dept.) clustered in Lincoln Park about a block away by the court house. I don't believe megaphones have been banned here, but the Occupiers were still using the group-repeat method in solidarity with those in New York. Photo by Amanda Painter.

  1. Depends on what’s on the shield. If there’s a snake, then it’s probably Athena. Nike (Victory) is usually depicted with a raised torch.

  2. hey beth — not sure, but my guess is that she is “victory.” it’s a monument to portalnd’s civil war casualties.
