Sun is in Virgo. Jupiter is retrograde in Taurus. The weekend starts off tomorrow night with Sun and Jupiter in precisely the same degree of their respective signs. That’s an aspect. This particular aspect is called a trine. Tradition considers trines to be positive, easy and strong. All of those potentials are often confirmed in experience. There is a catch, however. The ease and strength can get out of control. When that happens, things can become negative. That’s where we come in. It is important to remember that astrology does not happen to us, it happens through us. When we make trines happen, it is important to do so responsibly. It starts with a visualization.
A simple diagram can help you to see and feel what trines look like on a zodiac chart. Please find a piece of paper and a pencil. Draw a triangle with all three sides as equal as you can make them. Next, sketch a circle around the triangle that just touches all three corners. The curved part of the circle between any two points of the triangle is the distance between planets in a trine. For reference, write a little “J” for Jupiter where one angle and the circle come together. Make an “S” (for Sun) at one of the other two points.
Notice how your drawing looks. An equilateral triangle inside of a circle is an interesting and symmetrical combination of straight and curved lines. If the circle were the twelve signs arranged on the zodiac, the signs being touched by the corners of the triangle would all have something very important in common. That shared attribute would be the element associated with the three signs. Hence, when two or more objects are in a trine aspect it means that the bodies are in the same spot in different earth signs (as is the case with Sun and Jupiter tomorrow), or fire, water or air, as the case may be. It is the element in common that symbolically endows tries with their characteristic ease. It works the same way in the material world.
Energy usually travels most easily through a single medium. Where energy reaches the interface between two mediums, it can often be dissipated, absorbed, distorted or reflected. Think of what happens as light or sound transmit through just the air or just water alone. In either case, the information can go a long way and still be perceived clearly. In both cases, when energy reaches the place where air and water come together, there is a lot lost or changed in translation to the other side. The same principle is behind the easy flow for which trines are noted.
Other than being together in the same sign (which is a conjunction), there is no more powerful way for planets to merge their energy than through a trine. The common element is a constant that enhances the flow. Unlike a conjunction, however, the connection of a trine carries a lot more than just the planetary archetypes.
A trine opens a channel between two entire signs, and everything they represent and every object they contain. That’s a lot. That opening carries a lot of energy for a long distance and it acquires a kind of inertia that the aspect has no inherent way of governing. The phenomena is alternatively inspirational and a caution. On the one hand the strong and easy flow can serve creative, constructive purpose and favor bringing disparate things together easily to great effect. It fees good when that happens. So good, as a matter of fact, that it is likewise easy not to know when to stop. That is an important consideration when Sun and Jupiter are involved.
Sun and Jupiter are the two biggest things in our solar system. Their size alone implies authority and power. Connected through the earth element, the implication is about making a difference in the material world. Situated respectively in Virgo (ruled by Mercury) and Taurus (ruled by Venus), the difference made would seem to have very personal consequences. Spending part of the weekend moving vegetables from a garden to a food bank would be one way in which the trine could be very positively and constructively expressed with little danger of excess. Transferring the product of a distillery to our bodies may not be such a good idea under the circumstances. If you feel the trine power and wonder what to do, go back to your diagram.
In the Daily Astrology blog on Tuesday, Gary and Amanda referred to switching channels. Look at your diagram. Among other things, the triangle in the circle resembles an old-fashioned tuning knob, complete with pointers to tell you what channel you are on. Right now, it’s on the earth element channel and the Sun-Jupiter trine is tuned into the material world. You are part of the show. Nevertheless, you can also get some perspective as an observer.
If the flow of the Sun-Jupiter trine makes the outer part of the circle a bit slippery, get a firm grip on the triangle on the inside and point it somewhere else. One turn to the right and you will be tuned into the intuitive inspiration of fire. Another click takes you to water so you can get in touch with how you and others are feeling. A third clockwise turn and it’s the air channel to help you think clearly before returning to Sun and Jupiter with a new perspective on astrology and your part in it. You can do it. You can go a long way towards making it a great weekend if you aspect responsibly.

Oh, I have to chuckle. This weekend is our community’s annual drag queen celebration. Thanks for the advice. This leo moon is chilling out, observing, and bringing lots of sweet homemade pecan pie and whipped cream to enjoy the show. I shall be on my best behavior and report my findings to the mother ship.
:D….the exercise equipment in my apartment complex gym is being replaced today – working out is one of my favorite activities but this will make it far more pleasant and in a space that is meant for it (keeping my apartment sacred for other things).
This upgrade also creates exercise space that is easier/more pleasant to share with others.
Hm…does sound a bit like this aspect, no?
🙂 xo
….just now, quick little earthquake here. Mother is calling.
Thanks for not dissing trines (or grand trines) Len; in these times where we are elbowed by all the squares in the air, it is very calming to know that there is a brief uncomplicated, non-challenging trine between two astral energy reps. I for one have it going on already with the exterior of our condos being painted. I figure trans. Jupiter in Taurus in my 2nd house of property trine the trans. Sun and Venus in my 6th house of services will surely increase the value of my home, which is not something I hear said much these days. I will take a trine any time it is offered.
As it happens, I have natal Urania exactly at the midpoint of the two transiting giants and she will be holed up tomorrow (in Cancer of course) while the heat climbs to 100 degrees outside, checking out the other planets who are being grumbly and nasty toward each other. I say again, many thanks for the brief respite you great gods in reality-based earth signs; wish you could stay longer.

I’ve drawn my diagram and am ready for aspecting responsibly. Great visuals to teach yet another important astro lesson.
Thank you Len.
