People rarely debate whether matches are safe. Instead, they look at who will be using them, and how. You don’t give matches to people who cannot be responsible and accountable for their use from start to finish–all the way to putting out any live cinders left in the ashes. Given that some nuclear waste will remain highly toxic longer than the human race in its present form has been on the planet, it’s safe to say that we’re not in a position to either put out or watch over nuclear cinders. Nuclear energy is an incredibly irresponsible path to take. Given humanity’s immature, insatiable appetite to grow and displace everything else, nuclear power plants are like matches in the hands of a two-year-old.

funny, i made a similar comparison yesterday in the letter that went out to the subscriber list — that we’ve been letting our leaders (and by extension ourselves) play with fire unsupervised; with “supervision” being the equivalent of sufficient ethics. hm.
