yes, mama’s is a very cozy wee place! and i have to say, your question about high heels in snow really tickled me. the short answer is, “you don’t.”
i’m amazed at the number of young women i see wearing heels when it’s just cold, but with several inches of snow on the ground, it’s not only uncomfortable, but unsafe — especially when ice is part of the mix. oh yeah, and if it’s really cold, the salt mixes with the snow instead of melting it to create this super-slippery “greasy” feeling stuff… and salt ruins leather.
i pretty much live in my lace-up shearling-lined boots with good rubber treads all winter. and even when it’s nice, i really can’t wear heels above a mid height due to an old toe injury. there are plenty of stylish boots women wear around here, but if they’re not insulated you end up looking cool with cold feet. right now low-heeled/flat boots are still “in” — which i love, but so far haven’t been able to afford a pair (which is killing me — i’d really love to get in on the trend while it’s still here).
of course, there are plenty of styles of boots with heels, too. but again, with snow and ice they’re not much safer than a pair of pumps.
as for changing shoes at a bar… no one really does that here. which is not to say you couldn’t. it’s just pretty much understood that most people simply dress to stay warm and dry in this weather. (sure, the club kids wear whatever is “hot,” but the rest of us just shake our heads at mini-skits and stilettos when it’s 15F.)
the salsa-dancing and tango scenes are the only place where i and others (men and women) bring shoes to change into, but that’s because it sucks to try and spin on a dance floor with wet soles (great way to torque your knee). and the men also change their shoes for that, too.
hope that helps…. 🙂

This is kind of bar that could easily become a favourite haunt. It’s really nice. I like everything about Portland.. it snows, yeah!.. we don’t get any snow.
Question: How do you wear high heels with all the snow? I live in heels and can’t begin to imagine not matching clothes with various styles. Do you have many styles of boots with heels or do women just not wear them? Or, would you wear boots outside and slip heels on inside a bar?
