Oct. 4 – Francis of Assisi’s day

Saint Francis of Assisi is known as the patron saint of animals, the environment and one of the two patrons of Italy (with Catherine of Siena), and it is customary for Anglican and Roman Catholic churches to hold ceremonies blessing animals on his feast day of 4 October.

  1. Also, October 4th is Sputnik Day – in 1957 the first satellite was launched by the Russians. It is also the last day of the Julian calendar – in 1582 October 4 was the last day of that calendar, then the next day was October 15 and the start of the Gregorian calendar. Oh yeah – and it’s my birthday. Kat
