  1. I think we create unnatural and not so useful tension when we characterize any use of any substance as addiction. In our discourse, we are not leaving room for appropriate use of natural substances that are abundant on the Earth and that took humanity thousands of years to develop and understand. I am aware that addiction exists and is an enormous complex problem, though I think we need to make distinctions about more and less appropriate use, and abuse.

  2. Again my heart aches at the loss of such a beautiful friendship and girl!! As I sit surrounded by my daughters and nieces (and grandson) this morning, laughing and enjoying each others company a sting enters my heart because each one of us struggles with staying sober off of one drug or another. (Each of us has our own drug of choice). however the fact remains that the choice to pick up is always there and its as real as the monkey on our backs……peace again Simone…to the great memories you have to hold on to.

  3. I focused on my connection to Toby, her mom, and Simone, who I know well. I did not know Kaila that well. I photographed her and Simone once and then she disappeared into heroin land and Simone pulled back; it was too painful for her and she didn’t want to get drawn in. I was emotionally removed enough to be fully present for Toby and Simone and Simone’s sister Shana. Truly, Toby is the strong one — she’s been incredible, while not denying her pain or the depth of the loss.

  4. ok, heart officially broken now. Only a taste of what you must have been through, Eric, i’m sure. Your duty to dharma done as well as anyone i have ever met, you are one strong man.
