Mercury Unbottled – Part 2: The Scapegoats

“…concentrate on one enemy at a time and blame him for everything that goes wrong; people will believe a big lie sooner than a little one; and if you repeat it frequently enough people will sooner or later believe it.
(
Excerpted quote from Eric Francis’ article in the series on Auschwitz called “The Big Lie.”)

The Scapegoat by William Holman Hunt, 1854.

The Scapegoat by William Holman Hunt, 1854.

“We need to know the full extent of Senator Obama’s relationship with ACORN, who is now on the verge of maybe perpetrating one of the greatest frauds in voter history in this country, maybe destroying the fabric of democracy.

(Republican Presidential nominee Senator John McCain at the third and final Presidential debate, October 15, 2008)

“George Wallace never threw a bomb. He never fired a gun, but he created the climate and the conditions that encouraged vicious attacks against innocent Americans who were simply trying to exercise their constitutional rights,” … “Because of this atmosphere of hate, four little girls were killed on Sunday morning when a church was bombed in Birmingham, Alabama.”
(Georgia Congressman John Lewis, civil rights veteran, on the hate-speechВ at the McCain campaign rallies.)

Dear Friend and Reader:

WE BEGIN THIS EXORCISM with a prayer for four little girls in Alabama, for Matthew Shepard, for James Byrd, for theВ 16 children killed in the daycare centerВ of theВ Alfred P. MurrahВ Federal Building blown up by domestic terrorist Timothy McVeigh in Oklahoma City in 1995В and for everyone who has everВ directly confrontedВ a torch, a gun, a bomb or an epithetВ in the name of unthinking hatred and fear.

In Wikipedia, a scapegoat is defined as someone “who is blamed for misfortunes, generally as a way of distracting attention from the real causes”. For some, those real causes can range from isolation and loneliness to outright terror of the natural and inevitable changes that life brings — in one’s personal life,В in your community, culture, religion orВ world.

Real causes can also include one’s own guilt and remorse projected onto someone else, making them, not you, everyone’s focus. In some cases the distraction deals with the ineptitude and rootlessness of one’s campaign. In all cases, it seems all too easy to project fear onto “the Other.”

At the end of Mercury Unbottled – Part 1, I wrote: “He (McCain) is now like liquid mercury unbottled. Once spilled, hard to contain, even harder to keep a finger on and lethal to swallow. But at that point, when cornered as he is, a political animal becomes all the more dangerous.”

Since the debate, the campaign of Senator John McCain the political animal has become dangerous. ScapegoatingВ is occuring at a rhythmic pace. Remember Casey’s words from “A Coup on the Mind“? They lie. Rinse.В Repeat. Continue reading

The Last Hurdles

Editor’s note: the following is a piece written by Judith Gayle, a feature writer for Planet Waves’ subscriber edition, Planet Waves Astrology News. She also writes a political blog, called Political Waves, where this piece was originally printed. –RA

With only 15 days to go, you’ve seen what the Right is using to slow up Obama’s sweep — race and voting issues. The McCain buzzwords which include everything from the far, dark corner under the kitchen sink, are hateful and frightening to the base — now it’s “welfare” and “socialism.” Mac continues to be rash with this mouth, alienating those who aren’t on his narrow, Red path.

Consider:

“At least in Europe, the Socialist leaders who so admire my opponent are upfront about their objectives,” McCain said in his weekly radio address. “They use real numbers and honest language. And we should demand equal candor from Sen. Obama. Raising taxes on some in order to give checks to others is not a tax cut it’s just another government giveaway.”

That’s a quote from an article indicating that Obama drew 100,000 in St. Louis yesterday; 75,000 in Kansas City later in the day. As Obama opens up the world to unifying possibilities, McCain insults Europe, as he did Spain not too long ago. We will NOT survive this century if we continue to exclude and alienate. Old McPoopyPants is the cranky voice of continuing the national isolation George Bush made an art form.

CNN’s Blitzer noticed that too, throwing it for comment to Missouri swing-state’s Claire McCaskill and Roy Blunt. Matt Blunt, Roy’s boy and our quickly expiring Governor, told us on Face the Nation Saturday morning that Sarah Palin was a perfect candidate for the Show Me state. On CNN, Roy defended Palin’s notion that small towns [Pea Patch style] are the home to real, pro-Americans [make that culturally conservative and religious.] Absurd!

The Blunts are just that, Neanderthals of a quickly fading era. Missouri is a bellwether — McCain currently leads by a single point and it’s dicey that he can hold it; the turnout for O yesterday set a national record. As well, Obama has turned so many traditionally Red states that bellwethers may not have much punch this time. In case you missed it — all truisms are moot this time.

The big news of the race today is Colin Powell’s endorsement of O as a transformational figure’ prepared to lead the country. He spoke of the generational shift, he mentioned the larger topics of Supreme Court nominations and international goodwill — he was effusive about Obama and as enthusiastically damning of his own party. The question concerning moderates of all stripes, even those not effected by race, has been Obama’s readiness and experience; Powell just put that to bed.

And only the dense would refuse to see that Colin’s endorsement is the military-mind rejecting the out-of-touch military-model; that can’t be ignored. Troops are now sending four times the money to O than McCain; Powell’s selection won’t surprise them, but it may surprise a few others. And while endorsements at this late date don’t usually carry too big a punch, this one may. Continue reading

Astrology Ahead: Aspects for Oct. 20 – 26, 2008

Dear Friend and Reader:

Enjoy the day-by-day account of this week’s aspects, written by Planet Waves’ own Genevieve Salerno. We are taking a more open-ended approach to the aspects this week, and I would like to invite you to add your thoughts about what you read — ideas about mythology of the asteroids, your experience of the aspects, and anything you think we may have missed. Comment away…

Yours & truly,
Eric Francis

On Tuesday, the Moon enters Leo, the sign most associated with creativity and playfulness and therefore with children or the state of childhood.

On Tuesday, the Moon enters Leo, the sign most associated with creativity and playfulness and therefore with children or the state of childhood.

20 Monday: Sun sextile Galactic Center. Who you project into the world is the same as how you want the world to see you. Whether or not this is truly what you are made of is a personal decision. As Mars conjoins Chariklo today, the idea of being the supporter or witness to the process of another will come up. This is not so much about the victim as it is about pride. How hard is it to admit when you have been hurt, or to own up to when you hurt others?

21 Tuesday: Last Quarter. Moon enters Leo at 10:35 am EDT. Sun sextile Pluto. Leo is the sign most associated with creativity and playfulness and therefore with children or the state of childhood. The Sun sextile Pluto suggests a coherent understanding of time’s fleeting nature. Locked within the mystery of the child is the idea that the Child is an immortal state, while childhood has a beginning and an end. To understand a statement like that is to understand the transience of time. With Varuna stationing retrograde, Truth takes on more personal attributes.

22 Wednesday: The Sun is in the final degrees of Libra. Mercury trine Chaos. Venus conjoins Hylonome. Whenever the Sun makes an ingress (changes signs) there is a sense that something is coming to a close. It may be reflected by something hapening in your own life, or it may just be a new smell in the air that brings you to the fact that the season is maturing.

With these two planetary aspects occuring today the sense of flying off the handle, or losing control of the situations you are in, can be heightened. However, this is not a good reason to grieve, as Venus’ relationship with Hylonome might suggest. Rather, these powerful emotions are useful in navigating the idea of how much control you have over your circumstances and how much you do not have. It is true that as it grows colder (or warmer depending on your hemisphere), you change your clothes but your body itself stays the same. It might not be a bad idea to consider the parallels between the body in a sweater and the heart in the body.

23 Thursday: Sun enters Scorpio. Moon enters Virgo at 3:40 pm EDT. Juno conjoins Galactic Center. Venus conjoins Psyche. What is equality? What is justice? What is mercy? These are questions to consider whenever Juno and Venus are aspected, especially now that the Sun has crossed into the sign associated with the battlefield and with regenerative waters.

24 Friday: Mars semisquare Pluto; this is the last aspect before the conjunction coming late December. Mercury sextile Ixion. Something is coming up that is completely out of your character. You may get the chance to make some changes in your life, but only if you are ready to deal with the fear and embarrassment of being new in an old scenario. Put another way, the desire to grow and the courage to follow through with your actions is coming up against the tension of change actually happening. You may get the sense that you are flirting with disaster, but is this really the case? Also, Mercury is aspecting Ixion, the symbol of what you are capable of. Seems to me like the Universe is spelling out an oppurtunity for you to grow in a whole new, unexpected, genuine way. Should you take it, or should you risk waiting for a better time?

25 Saturday: Moon enters Libra at 10:47 pm EDT. Venus conjoins Pholus. Chiron stations direct. The Goddess of Affection and Attraction conjoins with the Centaur of “little cause, big effect”. Many times the greatest change you can make is a change of attitude or perspective. Chiron stationing direct in Aquarius addresses the sense of needing to be different in a crowd. Perhaps taking a new way home, or pausing in a natural setting will bring great ideas to your head today.

26 Sunday: Sun semisquare Saturn. Mercury square Jupiter. Pallas stations retrograde. Whenever the Sun makes an aspect to Saturn, the question is about power and limitation. And whenever there is a square in the picture, there is a sense of a locked door with a special combination to unlock it. Today is all about recognizing what your responsibilities are and what they are not. Also, with Jupiter in the picture, there may be a sense that everything is up to you, yet you cannot figure out the answer to the riddle. Do not despair. The good news is that while you are key player in your life, being stumped by the riddle is part of the riddle itself. As my father says, any decision you alone make in the name of what is good for you is the right one.

Astrology Today: The Oracle for Monday, Oct. 20, 2008

Today’s Oracle takes us to the Pisces weekly for May 12, 2006

The Oracle.

The Oracle. By Danielle Voirin.

The best has yet to come. Many factors are working for you, but more to the point, you are cooperating with the process of your own life. This is always the key. There is the game of making the best of the hand you’ve been dealt in life, and then there is the other game of making sure you really do have your own best interests at heart. You can leave any lingering doubts behind you. We don’t need to ask what you would do with all that energy, were it not invested in fear, and the answer is now obvious: you would direct it into the love, pleasure and creative passion for which your astrological sign is rightly famous.

Eating Supper Off a Mirror

Dear Friend and Reader,

MY MOTHER ALWAYS SAID to me the three most sensitive subjects to talk about are religion, politics and music. She instructed me to never talk about these things with people unless I was ready for a scream-out. Now, I am pretty deft at choosing friends that don’t get worked up about stuff like that: call it an affinity for intellectualizing, but as I get older and I begin to witness more conversations than I actually find tasteful to participate in, I’ve realized that my mother is right. Strange as it may seem, the three things she mentioned have something in common: mind control.

The last debate between McCain and Obama and the balooning economic bill have placed what we think of as power and who we would like as leaders into the forefront. It’s crucial as the final weeks before the election unfold, that each of us come to the personal realization that how we see the world around us is how we see ourselves.

What we find beautiful, ugly and dangerous is influenced by our minds. It is with our minds that we make our choices. It is with our capacity to reason and get carried away by emotion that enables us to interact and learn from this world we are in. I say this because the election is coming up and each and every one of us has our own personal vote that we can spend in any way we like — supposedly like our money. How we place our vote, like how we spend our money, is a reflection of what we value in the world.

About once a month my partner’s mother invites us to dinner and we are obliged to comply. We go to the house, get sniffed out by the two dogs and stand around in the kitchen for about 20 minutes before supper is ready. Then we go into the dining room and have a seat.

The wallpaper is a kind of floral striped affair in tones of pearl and bone. The crystal lamp lights are dust free as are the tops of the curtain rods. Witnessed by the collection of hand-painted ceramic song birds in the curio and the dogs who beg for what gets dropped “by accident” onto the floor, the conversation inevitably turns to one of two things: politics or the government.

Today’s Oracle takes us to the Aquarius weekly for May 2, 2003

The Oracle.

The Oracle. By Danielle Voirin.

This is your big moment to act like a Leo. It won’t really be an act, actually. And in fact, you can choose your fire sign. Okay I have a better idea: Firesign Theatre, starring You. Try being Sagittarian for a while, that’s the easiest one to fake. You get like all spacy like you’ve just had lunch with ET and shared a chef salad, but if you tell anyone they’ll think you’re nuts, even though he left his business card. Or like an Aries. Absolutely confident in yourself, you just forget. Let this be a reminder to remember. Ah, and then there’s Leo. How do I describe the relationship between you and your polar opposite sign right now? Aquarius and Leo are exactly the same thing. It’s just that one gave birth to a distant, bluegreen planet that sends out occasional jolts of energy, and the other to a hot young star that blazes all the time.

Dow Jones for Dummies

Dear Friend and Reader,

I WAS LUCKY enough to catch a few minutes with my friend John Curran who works in the financial sector (his primary experience is in hedge funds) and is still secure in his job in Manhattan. In between his train ride home (he’s just like Joe Biden!) and some time with his family, I asked him some questions about the Dow Jones and the recent market changes.

While researching for an earlier article, I realized that for all we’ve been reading and writing about the Dow, I wasn’t sure exactly what it was, where it comes from and what the difference is between, say, the Dow Jones Industrial, Transportation, Utility and Composite Averages.

First of all, the concept of trading is very old. In Prehistoric times, when humans first had the ability to speak, they traded goods and services for survival. During the Stone Age, the period when we started using stone tools, we introduced our first currencies: obsidian and flint. Obsidian flakes off to make very sharp points and blade edges, and flint is a fire starter. It’s the historical equivalent of trading Swiss Army knives and matches. (My mom is so proud I studied anthropology in college.)

As we evolved, and civilization became more advanced, our currency became less practical and more symbolic: turning to beads, silver and gold. By the 11th Century, “Muslim and Jewish merchants had already set up every form of trade association and had knowledge of many methods of credit and payment.”

To yank us up to present day, Wikipedia tells me the Dow Jones was launched in 1896 by Wall Street Journal editor and “Dow Jones & Company co-founder Charles Dow. Dow compiled the index to gauge the performance of the industrial sector of the American stock market. It is the second-oldest U.S. market index, after the Dow Jones Transportation Average, which Dow also created.”

Today’s Oracle takes us to the Cancer weekly for March 5, 2004

The Oracle. By Danielle Voirin.

The Oracle. By Danielle Voirin.

The Moon is now approaching full phase and, at the same time, the mighty Saturn has slowed to a halt in your birth sign. You may as a result be experiencing an upsurge of emotion, a crystalline sense of your own thoughts, and the sense that you’ve reached a turning point in your life. The overriding theme is maturity. While this is a short commodity in the world, it’s in abundant supply for you. I am certain that in the past you did not view your sense of age, experience and stability with such welcome. Behold: many other things are not as you thought.
