Sun in Cancer: Reorientation

Here is today’s Planet Waves FM podcast:

Today is June 22, 2011. It’s the first full day of the Sun’s transit through the sign Cancer; the Sun is at solstice. This is a moment of reorientation; the Sun has come 90 degrees since the astrological year began with the vernal equinox. This may seem like a subtle change, but the solstice points are among the very pivotal times of year. Everything and everyone can feel the shift in momentum. This could be a reassessment of some kind, a change in loyalty, or a shift in approach or ideology. Be conscious of this process, and you will trust it more, and be able to take advantage of it.

This turning point is echoed in the square aspect between Mars and Neptune that we described yesterday — the one about taking it easy with your ideas, not pushing too hard, and not trying so hard to be right. This aspect could cause some inner pressure. That pressure needs to go somewhere. Fortunately, astrology never describes a problem without also presenting probable solutions. We find one in the trine aspect between the Sun and Neptune, suggesting easy flow rather than tension.

To tap into this, it could be a good day for a silent meditation, or to get near some water. The beach would be great, but a fountain would do, or even a bath. The reality and the metaphor are: get into your feelings, be receptive, listen, contemplate — no matter how agitated you might feel.

Adding to the theme of water, we also have the Moon in Pisces, where it will be until Thursday at 4:24 am EDT. This is a sensitive position for the Moon, so you can expect people (and you) to be feeling a bit too vulnerable for daily life. But shutting down won’t work — listening and feeling are more likely to. You may actually discover something that gets right into that sensitivity: the Moon opposes Juno Wednesday morning at at 9:24 am. Juno can be a prickly critter, keeping score, prone to jealousy and having a reputation for being a bit mean. In Virgo, she might be a bit anal and insecure — we’ve all met this girl. Therefore, if you’re in a sensitive fishy space, try to not let her bother you too much — take a breath and move on, or take a bath and move on. You have better things to do with your imagination than fester over what anyone else is worried about.

  1. Oh I hear you on your mission to replace the word cancer for your natal sign, Mystes. The American Virgo Society indeed. No thank you. To think that the essence of your sign, that of nurturing and home and comfort, gets tainted and coloured by *that* word and its deathly associations. That is sad. I’m thinking that Kallinectes — clickity click — (or is that Klickity klick) 😉 is a worthy replacement and shall now start promoting its usage as well!

and as long as I didn’t jump the fun as well, then ‘s all good, right?!

  2. hmmm…the destruction of the nuclear family, eh?

I don’t think so. How has the nuclear family been destroyed? You can have all the nuclear families you want in this country.

What’s changed is that there are more alternatives norms for how we live — everybody doesn’t have to feel obligated to squeeze themselves into the Ozzie and Harriett mold.

I think your fellow astrologer has a streak of bubba in him. Although don’t get me wrong, the dynamic between the two of you is nice in the audio and the energy is good, and he makes some good commentary.

I just don’t think you should let him get away with a statement like that. We lefties have not set out to destroy the nuclear family.

  3. SB13, yes, you jumped the sun… and I will certainly hold the wish as given! Vocabulary I gots; intellect, who knows?. fx, I always misspell ‘kallinectes,’ since I think of the greek Îșαλός (“beautiful”) beginning with a “k.”

But I have a mission to replace the humble ‘cancer’ — with all of its disease associations– with callinectes or kallinectes. Try to imagine taurus being associated with a long, agonizing illness that has its own multibillion-dollar chemical-cure association (the American Taurus Society). It sucks.

And ain’t the interwebs grand? The fact that we can not only get the meaning, but the etymology and usage in a few clicks is sheer magic. I remember calling myself a ‘recreational etymologist’ because you know, back in the day I spent a hobbyist’s amount of time looking shit up. No more.

    Or rarely.

    hugs…

    M

  4. Mystes: Ah, I had an inkling I may have jumped the gun — something about no one else joining me……..! Jeez 😉 So I hope you file away those wishes for the dead centre of the cycle, pull ’em out and savour them all over again. and thank *you* for yet again introducing me to another new word – Kallinectes. Somehow in my head, I swear I can hear the sound of a crab clicking its pinchers when I *attempt* to pronounce it! Am I ever grateful to have the click button of my mouse throw up a dictionary, a thesaurus and a search page so I can keep up with your *gosh-darn-it-fantabulous-intellect* without having to get off my chair.
    ……………….

Linda in Sydney, it’s lovely to have you drop in. That’s quite the path you are about to walk down and such a very brave break from your past that you initiated to bring it about.

I wish you all the *very* best as you take these first steps, plus I do hope your runny nose dries up very soon (!) and that you’re back on your feet soon to get packing for your retreat. I will hold you in my intentions during the time of your stay.

  5. lindaGM — whoa is right. 🙂 as they say in show biz, “timing is everything!” safe travels, and best wishes for your retreat adventure.

  6. In September 2010, I made a decision to give away my job, home and current relationship set-up and go overseas for an 18 month personal retreat at a Tibetan Buddhist monastery.

At the time, I had no idea that my farewells and packing in June 2011 would be during this eclipse period. My plane leaves on June 29th and I arrive at the monastery on….. July 1st.

    Whoa.

As far as water is concerned, 24 hours after my last day at work as a funeral director, a flu bug manifested and I have spent the last 3 days in bed and blowing my nose! Today is my first day of being upright and…. the world feels very fluid right now.

Cheerful disorientation from cold, crisp Sydney,

    Linda

  7. Solstice brought Spring back to Central Texas! By 2 a.m., the rain had dropped temps a good 40 degrees from the day’s high, and today we are only in the 80s… a miracle after a month of 100+.

Saw this happen in Spring of 2010 as well. Spring equinox came, and within minutes the temps had dropped 30 degrees, dragging us a few days back into our mild winter.

It’s as if someone is messing with Persephone’s seasonal calendar, “Go down, no come back up, no wait not yet, go back…”

SheBear… thanks for the congrats, but I only meant that the sun is going into Cancer/Kallinectes. My birthday is dead center of the cycle, so a couple of weeks away. But I love you for the thought!

  8. Adding my “thanks” Eric, for your daily guidance. Jude – mee too – as well as having rather extrodinary “thin veil” experiences….wish it were more invigorating and less taxing…perhaps that’s all about the water.

Keep tussling brain vs heart in the form of “what should I be doing” vs “how shall I Be”?

Lovely Solstice here. Summer always begins in ernest on the Solstice.

  9. It really feels “new” today. My dreams were full of memories, some dim, some vivid, and now the day is full of surprise. I’m going to spend the day appreciating it as a revelation; nothing from the past applies. That should mix it up some. Thanks for the thumbnail, e … these little “mini’s” are very helpful.

  10. I second Indrani on that. Such a lovely way to kick off. And such stunning photos (Amanda’s included, simply gorgeous!) – all that chlorophyll and water helps me survive a muggy, hot city.
    Thank you xxx

  11. “get into some water…”

The rain is coming! the rain is coming! I can smell it, due West of here… the tree frogs are roaring like 5 oclock traffic (they’ll stop once the water actually descends). Temps have dropped in the last 15 minutes, from a muggy 90 degree night to somewhere in the 60s.

It’s a big bruiser of a storm, water coming down in sheets says my friend in the contiguous county. And it’s probably radioactive rain at that. But, help heaven me, I do love it…

Ah, the first thunder… time to get off line.

  12. Really appreciate the daily report Eric – so much going on at the moment, it’s nice to have the guidance.

    Thanks,

    Indrani
