Meanwhile, back at Mercury retrograde

Note, European airlines and agencies conduct test flights.

Mercury stationed retrograde this morning just past midnight EDT, so the whole volcano drama we’re witnessing is part of the Mercury storm phenomenon: quite an impressive display of travel disruption often associated with Mercury retrograde. The irony is that it doesn’t involve a mechanical device but rather a geological one, that is having effects through the technosphere.

Mercury retrograde is a good time to learn about having Plans A, B and C, and being ready for the unexpected.

I think it’s beautiful that this turn of events is turning people back in the retro direction of ferries and trains. Imagine the ocean of jet fuel that’s being saved right now. If you ask me this is what part of environmental progress is going to look like: a lot less of the least efficient methods of doing things. Air travel is sort of convenient, and it saves you a lot of time on long hauls, but it’s extremely inefficient in terms of how much carbon is put into the atmosphere, mile per mile.
