Hypnotic — well sure. And, a photograph can also be part of a synchronicity; it can be apropos of the moment. I was not thinking about the webs of conspiracy that were being discussed here all weekend when I took or posted that photo, but it certainly illustrates the point beautifully. The dead leaves, the broken glass…
Nature beautifully captured in a photo.
Carrie,
Yes – and well, I have friends who “don’t believe in” Global Warming too.
(and I have no doubt that there are people who consider GW as a conspiracy – along with the moon landing…)
Fer Sure we are full of fear and doubt re our intuitions and what’s straightfoward and in front and all around us.
Eric,
I read the discussion between the editors on that wiki page you linked and I have to say I have seen that same kind of almost fearful denial in so many people. A long-time friend of mine who is very open minded and progressive in her thinking was talking with me about 9-11 this weekend. When I mentioned about the new NIST report and the 1200+ engineers and architects who disagree with the official reports her words stunned me, “You don’t really believe all that conspiracy stuff do you?” I had to tell her that to me, the so-called “conspiracy stuff” was just as valid a consideration for the reason events happened as they did, as the official story. I reminded her of past actual government conspiracies that were proven true (Watergate, Iran-Contra) and then said those past facts give reason for the inclusion of the possibility of conspiracy for this event. She was amazed and disbelieving. I could hear the laughter in her voice and I knew it covered a deep rooted fear that if she allowed herself to believe that such a terrible thing is possible (our own government either causing it or allowing it) then her whole, comfortable world would collapse into itself, just like those buildings. For her, the official report is the safest one to believe so she clings to it like a lifeline; she cannot deal with anything else.
I don’t know why it is that some people are perfectly capable of incorporating the idea that our government may be culpable in some way while others are incapable of even allowing those thoughts to grow at all. All I know is, trying to get past people’s fear of knowing or thinking is a tall order for anyone involved in matters of truth.
Sometimes people cant even just see the beauty of nature without imposing and projecting bloody politics on it.
Why cant this just be a photograph that captures the aweome beauty of mother nature, so subtly, so perfectly, so sweetly.
eric:
I have absolutely no doubt that WTC will come up again in the immediate future, since the Imam has weighed in on the hoopla over the weekend with Terry Jones and says that the mosque is not on “holy ground”, and we are in high election season.
The question is who and why are we using the term “holy ground”? I think its the site of a tragedy, yes. But holy ground? No. No. No.
The war of words and deliberate misuse of terminology creates social, cultural and political migraines. I for one, wish these ignoramuses would just shut the fuck up.
Part of how the truth comes out is we help. We have a tool that historically has not really been used well for shaping public dialog or establishing an idea — astrology. As Shanna points out, Pluto stations direct on the 911 South Node and opposite WTC7 Moon. And on Oct 7, there is a New Moon 2 arc minutes into the WTC1 chart’s ascendant, conjunct its Mercury. This is the Sabian degree, “Circular paths.” I’m doing the chart now as part of the Oct. monthly horoscope — it’s quite a new moon, conjunct Sisyphus and Apollo — and 2 degrees from Haumea. We must ask Len about that.
In a short time, Saturn crosses the ascendant of the WTC1 chart == 14+ Libra — Circular Paths.
This issue now has its moment. It will not require more than a few people understanding these questions to make a difference. And there will be many more things like this in the future, perhaps even bigger. 911 makes a great case study in government, public perception and media dynamics. We simply must understand these things — not get caught in the drama and hand wringing about how horrid it is and whether it’s possible and what about these people who don’t believe it; but rather involve ourselves with understanding the structure of the world in which we are living, and how to navigate that structure.
I would call knowing the basic questions about 911 a basic form of media literacy.
If you’re following this issue, I suggest you take a look at the debate between me and Jordgette, another Wikipedia editor. For those who wonder “how do these things get covered up, and how might they be exposed?” this is a perfect example.
Jordgette is engaging in a dialog about a quotation from a video that she says does not exist. Her role, self appointed or otherwise, is to keep the Larry Silverstein “pull it” quote from PBS off of the pages of the encyclopedia.
Cynthia,
I too wish the lies could be caught so easily. I think the most difficult thing for me is the terrible slowness of the revelation; it may be so many years before it actually comes and by then, it may make no real difference. Watergate revelations seemed to take forever to come out, and by the time they did, did anything really change as a result? Instead, the whole Watergate thing made Dick Cheney (who was part of the group of insiders who wanted to create an imperial presidency back then; see PBS special on Dick Cheney) go underground and plan ever more carefully so that in 2000, he had his chance to do it better for eight long years. I may sound pessimistic but at age 50, I have seen that change happens way too slowly and not enough of it is in the right direction because the decent folks play by the rules too often while the indecent folks bend the rules to suit themselves.
My focus now is to find ways to heal myself, my family and as many people as I can spread joy and kindness to in my lifetime. Everyday, in everyway. That way, I am focusing on the positive even as I deal with the uncertainty and fear I have lived with since my childhood under “the mushroom cloud,” mentality (which has now become the “mad terrorist” or “doom and gloom economics” mentality). I see it this way; if I remain focused on the fear and uncertainty, they (the ones who are fear mongering everyone to gain their own selfish ends) have won control over me and I choose to control myself instead.
Cynthia, hello.
Yes, I hear you. I think it may be time to shift the conversation to what it means to confront the truth behind a lie, or to have one’s conception of reality changed by a revelation. I can tell a short story here. I first went through this in March 2002. Right before my birthday, when Planet Waves was simpler, I planned a week off to write erotica.
Then on the eve of my break, a Monday night, an email floated in with the famous “find the Boeing” website from Asile.org. I stopped what I was doing and began reading, ad followed through and studied the photos. I spent the next week looking mostly at one singe Defense Department official photo of the crime scene at the Pentagon, and also looking at many others; hundreds of others but dissecting one in particular. I had a high-res copy of the picture (which was on the government website) and so I could look at very small bits in photoshop.
I had long had my concerns about the official story and the Pentagon in particular seemed very strange for the lack of any obvious airplane wreckage. So this sparked my curiosity and I went for it. By Friday afternoon, based on the visual evidence, I had to admit to myself that there was no airplane. The story was not true.
And if that story was not true, it cast everything else into doubt. And for that one night I experienced actual liberation. I felt free. My mind was as unburdened as it’s ever been. It was a fun night — I had a playdate set up with a friend and I went to the ferry to pick her up and we had a great time.
Wish it were as easy to see the dead liars caught in the web of deception as it is to photograph the tree shed.
I have been caught on the edge of despair, all to afraid of falling. And then tonight, I saw the most magnificent sunset I have seen in a very long time. The clouds, east and west, were beautiful pinks against a happy blue. As the pink drained from the east, the west took on golden tones and the pinks became regal. In the south, a strong and waxing moon faced the setting sun.
I remembered that beauty cannot be bought or sold. That wealth is existential. That everything fades and cycles. And that happiness happens from the intake of air through the next intake of air.
I already fell. Time to get up and sweep away the dead liars stuck in my spiderwebs.
Thank you PW community.
