I once had a friend who told me, “I can’t sense energy. I’m like a baked potato.”
Yet one day, I left on an errand as he was handling a piece of pyrite (also known as fool’s gold). Pyrite is known for many properties, but the one I’ve noticed is that it stimulates the gall bladder and can bring forth aggression or rage, but I hadn’t told my friend this. When I returned home, my usually pacific friend was in a boiling rage and almost ended our relationship.
We are energy, we live in a cosmos of energy, we all respond to energy, yet in many circles, mentioning one’s sensing of energy is considered ‘woo-woo’ or even frightening, something only psychics and TV ghost-hunters do. How can something so all-pervading, the very stuff of the universe, be weird or unknown?
As I discussed in a previous article, “Is it Time for the Invisible Worlds to Come Out of the Closet?” it could be that if we were all highly attuned to energy our lives would be vastly different. We would know when something is true or not, in alignment or out of balance. At some level we are already doing this, but we have numbed out our knowing.
Yet every day we use terms that describe invisible energies:
He hurt her feelings
The atmosphere was electric
A romantic atmosphere
A lovely ambiance
I love you
The tension was so thick you could cut it with a knife
Spine tingling
That actor has great presence
She is a charismatic leader
When I am around her, I feel a deep peace come over me
This place gives me the willies
This is my chair, it just feels like the right place for me to sit
How do we know when we are sensing this indefinable energy?
In my workshop, The Laboratory of Life, the first thing we do is walk through the room or space we are in, and sense how the energies in various places in the room can be distinctly different. We may notice it in the belly or throat or ‘third eye,’ or as skin changes, breathing or visual changes, or ease or tension. The inner imagery or monologue/dialogue may shift as well.
For some, as soon as the direction is spoken, they “just know” where the space is. Some meander to the space as they search, some move right to it. There is no right or wrong way, only your way or ways (and these can change and become more fine-tuned as we learn).
All of these have been described by people who ‘saw’ images appearing in their ‘mind’s eye’ during the work. But more of the descriptions have related to a more tactile or kinesthetic sensation, like changes in pressure on the skin or in the ears, tingles, tickles, coolness, warmth, pleasurable or unpleasurable sensations, a magnetic pull or push, or a feeling like walking through different densities of water, sometimes so intense that it is like a wall one cannot go past or a current one cannot resist.
Some people report a change in what they are hearing in their ears, like a whoosh, or a rhythm. Others track by the changes in their thinking — more noisy or quiet, a different rhythm or pace. I call it a see-feel, or hear-feel.
The dimensional aspects of energy fields
As we form relationships in space at varying distances, angles and rotations, we become gradually more highly sensitized to these differences. This is because energy fields exist multidimensionally and holographically. Not only that, but as we ‘work a space’ by setting up these relationships, the space itself seems to grow more responsive to our intention and movement!
We find that the movement of half an inch, right or left, front or back, or in rotation, can produce a pronounced effect on our consciousness, the relationship we are in with the person next to us, our relationships with the people we interact with in our lives, and on our inner world. It is astounding, yet somehow familiar, because whether we are conscious of it or not, we are doing this every day.
When you look at two people standing together at a gathering, there is so much you can tell about the nature of the relationship by where they are standing. Most couples will tell you that they almost always sleep on the same side of the bed and can’t sleep if switched.
We have many idioms that refer to this spatial aspect of relationship:
I’ve got your back
I want someone by my side
He stepped back from the problem to get a better handle on it
It just came in from left field
They are on your side
It came out of nowhere
We have evidence of energy fields in witnessing people’s behavior. There are many cues that one may react to — visual, olfactory, auditory. Physical ease or tension may be seen in the musculature, the facial expression or body posture, smelled in the odors produced by the body, seen or sensed as a radiance or lack of radiance in the skin, sparkle or dullness in the eyes. You can see the evidence of group energy fields in contagious behavior, such as riots, mass religious conversions and so-called patriotic fervor — and that the energy that emits through a speaker’s words can inspire or incite these group behaviors.
One way you can know if you are being influenced by outside energies is when you have sudden changes in thoughts or emotional states, especially unfamiliar ones (e. g., suddenly feeling fear or grief, having your inner monologue/dialogue change pace or tone, or loss or gain of vitality for no apparent reason).
Awakening awareness
If we saw (with inner and/or outer seeing) everything going around us, would we see flows of color, sparkles, waves, dark clouds, thought fields, emotional forms, angels, devas (elemental spirits) and masters of light? Take a moment to locate the angels or other non-physical beings with you right now.
What does an energy field look like? Is it just like a nebulous cloud? Does it have light or color or form? Geometric shapes? Movement? A lacework pattern? A vortex or spiral pattern? A fancy merry-go-round or Chinese pagoda, intersecting circles or spheres, ripples on a pond, a vesica piscis? All these have been reported in the workshops, often by several people or the entire group. Whatever you get, it is yours to keep and is precious.
What does all that mean?
It means that there is more going on than we often give credit or credence; that our interpretations of our physical senses have been limited and filtered to reach a common consensus of what is real. It means that we need an expanded language to describe what is taking place and a training process to learn how to experience and interpret our experience, to make it usable and bring it into being in a greater way. It is a continuous discovery process. The answer to “what is really going on here?” is worth a lifetime’s study, just as one might study a culture, a nation, a religion or a science.
When we change an energy field, can we change the world?
That is one of the big questions in all of my work. (And I know I am not the only one; these ideas have been spreading everywhere.) We know that we can change what happens in interpersonal relationships and in groups of people and organizations that are of a size we can track. We may not know for sure whether we can change what is happening on a planetary scale — or at least, we can’t prove what we know.
In large and many-factored systems, change is more difficult to track, unless you use the magnificent instrument of human awareness and learn by testing it thoroughly to trust what you know. There are people developing new sciences using computer algorithms to answer questions like, what are trends and how can we influence them? I also wonder, how does the world change overnight? What changes “the course of history?” Can we save this magnificent planet?
I’ve created my life’s work, the Godwork Meetings and many of the other workshops I’ve facilitated from my intuition that this absolutely is what we are capable of. Right now I’m collaborating on a Light the World Tour, which I hope you will be part of, to facilitate the processes I’ve referred to around the planet to turn the tide toward thriving for us and the planet.
How do we know we are not unintentionally doing harm instead of good? That is where working with the prayer and inner alignment of, “for the highest good of all concerned” comes in, which I will address in another article.
From experience I’ve come to believe that a small group, holding an exquisite, coherent pattern of energy, can affect a larger field. Because reality is holographic and multidimensional, we can address ourselves to whatever level we can imagine and allow ourselves the intention of affecting. Why not nations? A planet? An ecosystem? The seen and unseen cosmos?
As Rumi said, “…there is a field. I’ll meet you there.”

“How do we know we are not unintentionally doing harm instead of good?”
Oh, Elisa, such wise words. In my experience, even the most well-intentioned people do great harm to those they believe they love and support, “merely” by their thoughts alone, which have consequences in our most immediate world and far beyond it. I look forward to your article about inner alignment “for the highest good of all concerned” – in the hope that coming from someone besides me, the message might finally stick!
Lovely. Thank you.
Yes, thank you, dear Elisa. In fact one of the reasons why I suffer so much when I go and stay with my folks is because the air is so thick with anxiety and unhappiness that you could cut it with a knife, and after a while I’m unable to sleep properly at night. Still not strong enough not to get overwhelmed by it all but know that I’m also able to bring a little light and warmth to my parents, even so.
Thank you, Jude, for the lovely video. I know about this guy’s work but I’ve never seen it in action.
Very nice, Elisa — particularly liked the Rumi quote. You’re speaking my language with all this lovely talk of energy, vibrations, fields, intention and invisibles. Here’s an illustration, for those who wonder how that might look — a favorite
