Speaking of Old News

The issue of unexploded ordnance doesn't affect only the Gulf of Mexico -- it is a worldwide problem. Here is a photo of a possible G-Series WWII German ground mine resting in 157 feet of water, adjacent to a pipeline in the North Sea. Photo from Samuel-Herbert PDF.

The New York Times today reported that the Gulf of Mexico for decades was used as a bomb dumping ground by warships returning to port after military operations. While this really involves all coastal waters in the United States, the the untold thousands of oil rigs and capped wells in the Gulf of Mexico — combined with the BP blowout — make this a pretty important story.

Here’s the funny part, which is that we broke that story on this blog in early May, and reported it in detail the same week in Planet Waves Astrology News. Here is that article, from our subscriber archives. Coverage of the Gulf being used as a munitions dump starts about 1/3 of the way down.

In today’s edition of Planet Waves Astrology News, we are one of a very few news outlets that is actually covering the contents of the Afghan War Diary that was published by WikiLeaks on Sunday evening, containing 91,000 sensitive government documents about that war. And it’s being hailed by the media as “old news”! Well if it’s so old, why didn’t anyone tell us about it before? One problem with the Afghan War Diary is that it reveals what the media has been withholding from us all these years — which are the atrocities on the ground involving civilians.

I’ve decided to make today’s edition available to everyone. Please pass it around; if you know any editors, let’s get it into their hands, and plaster the link all over Facebook. If you click the link, the “permalink” URL will open.

  1. It is all so awesome. A conversation took place in one of my college courses a few months ago about how PROTESTING (aka options to communicate and take action to change things) had changed….some ofo the 18 year olds in class could not comprehend the value of People Gathering in Mass Protest……….claiming that what with the internet what was the point?

I do not agree -I think that it’s ‘All Good’ – however, Mr. Assand is a firm point in re: the “virtual” option of protest and how vital it is today.

And you Eric – how vital you are to the stream of consciousness taking to the air (stream of consciousness now has new meaning BTW.)

  2. Yes they have what they call a “harm minimization” process, which implies they’re aware that they cannot eliminate the risk — only reduce it. 15,000 documents were held up for this reason. The people who are named as those helping the United States prosecute its illegal, fraudulent war. They take a risk doing that. This is part of the reality of warfare that is not being explained to the people who are paying for it and who in my view bear the karma — that would be us — by not resisting, and by perpetuating our ignorance and by feigning ignorance.

  3. my understanding is that assand et al. have been redacting names from records for protection purposes, & that’s a major reason not all the records have been released yet; hopefully they’ve gotten all the ones that might matter.

  4. Mr Assand just inaugurated the modern antiwar movement. He’s not done – more documents are on their way.

This caught my eye: they are waging war and blame peace activists for hurting people. O the ironee

“You have Taliban spokesmen in the region today saying they’re combing through those documents to find people that are cooperating with American and international forces. They’re looking through those for names. They said they know how to punish those people,” Gibbs said.

  5. GOD/DESS Bless Ya, Eric! I gleefully sent this out and will continue to do so…..YOU are the real deal.

I cannot express my gratitude any more than by saying you have been a beacon of truth and you have absolutely opened my eyes more than anyone in the past decade.

I am acknowledging you: Thank you, thank you, thank you.

    Victoria
