Water, water, water and the Scorpio Full Moon

Friends, Cousins, Readers — here is your Full Moon audio. The article below — while a bit esoteric — looks at some of the subtler points of today’s lunar event. If you’re new to this kind of astrology, have a gander. It’s not quite “wear mauve, Gemini plays a role,” but there is some rich information and lots for the imagination. This article looks at some of the nonconventional planets that were closely conjunct this morning’s Full Moon. I explain them one at a time.

Sample of ephemeris listing for the current Full Moon from Serennu.com. To get the planets to appear in this order you have to use the feature "sort by degrees of zodiac," which will put them in the order they appear from Aries to Pisces. There are other sorting methods which are useful for other things.

Tracy, the author of the Serennu Ephemeris, emailed me a minute ago with some late-breaking news, to say that this Full Moon, the one happening now, is conjunct Ceto, Deucalion and Poseidon.

In Greek myth, Ceto was or is a primal sea monster with several other names. He is the child of Gaia and Pontus. Pontus was one of the first-born generation of Greek gods, and early god of the seas. Gaia was his mother.

In planetary science, Ceto is known as (65849) Ceto is considered by most astronomers to be a centaur (in the class of Chiron, eccentric orbit-crossers) though I have seen it listed elsewhere as a trans-Neptunian object. It may be one of those points that defies easy categorization because it meets certain qualifications of both.

Deucalion is a character from a Greek flood myth. One day a long time ago, Zeus was pissed off, so he let loose a deluge, “so that the rivers ran in torrents and the sea flooded the coastal plain, engulfed the foothills with spray, and washed everything clean. Deucalion, with the aid of his father Prometheus, was saved from this deluge by building an ark, like his Biblical equivalent Noah and Mesopotamian counterpart Utnapishtim” (in the words of the Wikipedia editors, if you can believe them). In astrology he is a TNO. In astronomy he is (53311) Deucalion, a trans-Neptunian object with an orbit of about 295 years — a classical Kuiper Belt object. From an old article on the water worlds, I quote my colleague Philip Sedgwick: Deucalion relates to “understanding the flow (tides of life), manifestation ability, magical, resourceful, and seeing the talent in everyone.”

Then there is the hypothetical point Poseidon, named for the Greek god of the oceans and seas. This is not actually a planet — it’s a calculated point that comes out of a German school of astrology from the early 20th century (these are variously called the Uranians, the Witte points or the TNPs). It has a circular orbit of a good few hundred years; I keep losing the list of low long the orbits of the TNPs are. They are used primarily by Uranian astrologers (modern followers of Witte). They actually work; it is weird. They “don’t exist” anywhere but the ephemeris, the chart and our minds (if we know about them) but still, they are interesting to read in a chart where they appear prominently and today, this is true.

For delineations of the Uranian hypothetical points, you need to go to another kind of specialist. Martha Lang Wescott gives these key ideas: “Uplifting people/ideas; psychic vibrations; persuasion; intellectual or spiritual influences; ideological or moral stances; spread of ideas; advertising; interest in business practices/ethics; inspiration; religion; mediums; clarity; enlightenment; receptivity to The Force; reactions to the media; windows, mirrors, refraction of light.”

So we have three points conjunct the Scorpio Full Moon right now — a sea monster, a character who built an ark to save himself and his family from the rising rivers, and the Greek god of the seas and oceans (also known as the Earth Shaker). This is a close conjunction, with all four points occupying a little over one degree, as you can see above. And, this is a demonstration of how much fun it is to study astrology. You learn about myth, astronomy and psychology all at the same time.

And once again, here is your Full Moon audio.

  1. What about the oil explosion and spill this week in the Gulf? I’d be interested in hearing thoughts on this.

  2. Re audio:

Barbara and anyone else — please let us know the issue with the recordings. Please tell me the operating system you’re using, the version of the OS, the browser and any other data. We want everyone to be able to hear these and Anatoly will figure out how to make it happen…….xxef

  3. Eric,

Thanks so much for this info about all the water critters around the water full moon. I’m unable to listen to your recordings, so no doubt there is even more fascinating stuff about this full moon. I thought it was trouble enough because of Mars in Leo making it a t-square and my Moon in Aquarius (and possibly yours too?) making it a stiff and flexless fixed grand cross, if only for a moment or two (or 2 weeks even).

I’m inspired and relieved now, what with the expanded powers of the Moon. I am curious though why Martha Lane Wescott’s key words do not give a specific water reference re: Poseidon, although does have water-type expressions like mirrors and refraction of light. Not a problem though; I get the picture of powerful (greek god Pos.), sometimes dangerous (floods and monsters) and deep, dark (Scorpio) waters.

Ceto was the father of the Sirens too so I’m thinking perhaps a tad bit irresistable waters. (oil?) A possible but risky way out of this non-budging cross.

Thanks also for posting Martha’s email chock full of observations most interesting. So glad she shared her thoughts.

  4. Eric …

I am not a poster, too many years as a regulated person on Wall Street I
guess. But I have a few thoughts for you on your new moon audio and water,
water, water posting. Not sure quite how to articulate this clearly, so let
me give you stream of consciousness. Greece, Portugal. Highly water-oriented
states, one a group of islands, one a sea-faring nation poking out into the
Atlantic as the Western most point of Continental Europe. Bringing something
on the interior into the exterior … appalling fiscal governance / lack of
discipline / juiced up by institutionalized graft and corruption (at least
in Greece, Portugal appears just feckless) hidden for years through opaque
financial engineering (with Goldman’s help, no I don’t work for them) coming
to the surface painfully, wrenchingly even, as the markets vote with their
feet and the rating agencies rush to keep up without looking too reactive.
Recovering old territory (Saturn in Virgo and Uranus in Pisces): we have
been here before … we keep coming back here … the market keeps hoping
somehow Europe will get its act together, Europe keeps pretending to, saying
what the market wants to hear, but not actually doing anything about it,
over and over and over again. Reconciling the rebellious outgoing Promethean
mischievous nature of Uranus in Pisces and an opposition of Saturn which can
be conservative and constrained / held in Virgo, a kind of judgmental sign:
the WSJ said today that Merkel (German Chancellor) faces a Hobson’s choice:
bail out the mischievous Greece with sufficient funds and risk conservative
and constrained (and therefore financially stable) Germany, not bail out
Greece and risk the EU and therefore Germany.

Finally Venus in Gemini approaching Juno in Gemini … the very foundation of
the marriage that is the European Union is being confronted with the
promiscuous energy of the profligate PIIGS: Portugal, Italy, Ireland, Greece
and Spain. So if Greece and Portugal go down, watch out for Ireland, Spain
and Italy. And if all of the naughty children of the EU come a cropper in
the debt markets, the EU is functionally irrelevant, as it nearly proved
itself already over the Icelandic volcanic ash travel snafus. If the EU and
with it the Euro (which was being mooted as a replacement reference currency
for the poor beleaguered dollar) actually goes under, or is severely
destabilized, surely a second dip to the Great Depression becomes a
    possibility?

Thank you for your insights. I have felt so often that you were speaking to
me directly that I finally subscribed, and have been delighted with the
interior content. You may do what you will with the above, including
ignoring it, but I need to remain in the anonymity required by my trade.

With great respect and blessings for the beautiful work you do.

    Martha
