Horoscopes: Should I read my rising sign?

Planet Waves MailBag

Dear Eric:

I want to ask you about reading the horoscope for one’s rising sign. My rising sign is Aries and I have started reading some of the Aries horoscopes recently and they feel pretty right on.

Sometimes even more immediately right on than the Cancer horoscope. My technical understanding of astrology is only very basic, so I’m curious what you might have to say about this, how you would frame the reading of the rising sign scope.

I write this especially because I am feeeeeeeling all this Aries action of late — it is exciting. And I’m thinking of ordering your Aries audio too. Thanks Eric.

.
Dear Sam,

Nice to hear from you.

When I write I do so consciously for the Sun sign and the ascendant (rising sign). Part of how this works is that my interpretations are strongly focused on the houses. When horoscope astrologers use the Sun sign, the assumption is that the Sun’s sign is the hypothetical ascendant; that is, the 1st solar house. When I say that my astrology is focused on the houses, I mean that this is basically where I begin my interpretation: something interesting is happening in every chart, but relative to your sign, where is it happening?

This is going to match up with your rising sign, if you know it. We are all pretty sensitive to the houses, and I make it a point to use this fact in my interpretations. Therefore…your rising sign is your ‘other sign’ and I am indeed designing the birthday audio (and the annual editions) to be for Sun and ascendant. Note that not all astrologers work this way. Jonathan, for example, has said that he writes only for the Sun sign and that’s the sign to read. I stretch things and would even go so far as to say if you’re Aries rising, read Capricorn for career clues, and so on.

Thanks for writing in.

PS if you’re feeeeeeeelng Aries now, just you wait to see what June has in store. Hoooeeeee!

  1. I remember my esoteric astrology class lesson about moon signs, sun signs, and rising signs. Here it is paraphrased for what it is worth: in esoteric astrology, the moon sign is your past life, the sun sign is your life now, and the rising sign will be your next life so if you are acting like your rising sign more, then you are sort of heading toward your next life but be sure you work on your sun sign because that is what you are here for. Or something to that effect. It also said the sun sign is the personality, the moon sign is the emotional part and the rising sign is the outward “face” people show everyone else. It was, after all, only a beginning astrology class. :::grin:::

  2. Mystes,
    Thanks.
No, my houses are not in trine…also my Sun squares my Ascendant.

Am I having fun being Cancer/Aries in this season? actually no, but cannot say that I am having problems either. I am fully aware that I am in the middle of spiritual upheaval, however, my 2009 experiences have well prepared me for this, at least so far I feel I am handling this well. Nothing superficial attracts me anymore. There is a lot internal reflection, realization going on.

I am in technology, and have Jupiter in Aries (but in the 12th house) recently, a lot of opportunities of success have passed me by, I just did not feel interested. Anything that lacks honesty, integrity and authenticity just does not do it for me any more. I have almost become indifferent and numb to those things. I love my work… with more than 20 years in this field I have loved each and every day of it.

Have just realized that I don’t want to strive for success, but instead I want to strive to live soulfully and purposefully. With each passing day I am becoming more and more clear on what I don’t want, but I have’nt got a clue as to what Do I want, how do I serve ? what is my purpose? This is my major frustration at this point, I am almost depressed about this.

I have Mars, Pluto and Uranus in Virgo. Uranus and Pluto in the fifth house and Mars in the sixth. As per Alice A Baily’s esoteric astrology Virgo is a sign of gestation , but it is specifically that portion of pregnancy known as the “quickening” I have definitely felt that quickening process of my self discovery after 2009 specially since Mar’s retrograde.

I feel too aware and too confused at the same time. I feel contentment and longing and craving at the same. I feel ambitious and indifferent to the opportunities at the same. If Pluto is about depth, I am being pushed into those depths mercilessly.

I have a dominant fourth house chart. I have Sun, Moon, Mercury and Venus and North node in the fourth house. (Venus is almost the cusp of 4th house). This era of Pluto in Capricorn and Saturn in Libra is my ticket to back home. I just hope I don’t lose my faith along the way and hang in there..

Any suggession, advise, insight is welcome.

    Thx
    Asha

  3. Asha, Eric… thanks for this little window. Asha, I can only imagine what fun a Cancer/Aries must be having during this season of Aries Point activity. But at least the houses are in a trine, no? That’s gotta be worth something.

I wandered me over to my natal chart and took a poke. Sagg rising. And yes, Jupiter (ruler of Sagg) sits in the 8th house, a few degrees up from the Mars/Uranus conjunct that heats and bestirs the hmmm… let’s call it the Life&Death Drive.

Thus, the Lord of Expansion lives in the House of No Boundaries.

What were we discussing? Oh yes, the influence of the Rising sign ruling planet on the expression of the ascendant? Jupiter inflates Mars/Uranus in the Eighth House, and makes damn sure I get the message via the Great Attractor (my degree of Rising).

While this plays havoc with my ‘daylight-savings self’ the rest of my Being throws up a megacheer: Doomed, doomed! to existing at an energy pitch that would give most people a migraine Soul-ache.

    Bloody hell.

I’ll get used to this in a few minutes.

    So thanks.

  4. Asha, that is probably a factor — the ruling planet, and what else might be in the ascendant. However, I think that it’s also about focus, about awareness. The ascendant can be subtle. It lacks substance. It is a direction, not a thing. Do we feel that direction? Do we feel a calling?

  5. I am also Aries rising and Cancer is my sun sign. On the outside I am very Aries like, very Martian, but on the inside I am a typical moon child.

Eric, For a person to resonate with their Rising sign, does it not depend on where the ruler of the ascendant is positioned on the chart. For example I have Mars in Virgo but in the fifth house (self expression).

    Thks
    Asha

  6. 22, the sign that intersects the ascendant is your rising sign.

Meanwhile, if an interpretation ‘doesn’t fit’ you have the ability to take it under advisement, or toss it…

  7. ….thank you Eric, for the information to read the other signs regarding different fields, for example, to get career clues. Very enlightening indeed!

I am glad I have the access to all of them 🙂

  8. What do you suggest to do in the case of a “big” first house that overlaps parts of two signs,- read both, or the one which has more planetary action going on? It’s the case for me, and I have been confused about my rising sign in that respect.
