Both Sides Now

By Len Wallick

It’s life’s illusions I recall, I really don’t know life at all…”
Joni Mitchell

Once again, our focus for the week is the Full Moon coming up this Friday. It has two things in common with the Full Moon in September. First, both take place in Aries, last month in the first degree, this month in the last. Second, Venus is in the same place both times thanks to its retrograde station in between. We are building up to Friday by looking at the daily astrology along the way.

Yesterday, it was Mercury forming the Libra-to-Aquarius air trine with the near-but-not-to-be conjunction of Neptune and Chiron. Today it is the Libra Sun’s turn to step into Mercury’s place. This will provide us with an intuitive chance to find out what a difference a day makes. It will also prepare us to make a comparison between the September and October Full Moons on both sides of Aries.

Let us recall that each sign is associated with one of the four elements in ancient western natural science. Signs of the same element have a geometric relationship called a trine. The key word for this relationship is flow. When planets are in different signs that share the same element, their communication flows easily with little tension or challenge. This can be a good thing. Things can open up and become with little or no effort. It can also be not so good if the relationship in question has become stale or toxic and is in need of an adjustment.

The near-miss conjunction of Chiron and Neptune in Aquarius implies an advent of clarity to our relationship with the collective. It is synchronous with an opportunity to see through self-deception and the deception of others. There is also the chance to move beyond feeling alone in the crowd and appreciate the power each of us has to live as an example to others.

The Sun, as befitting its role as the star at the center of our solar system, represents our creative expression of self shining out in the world. It is the symbol of our conscious and willful presence. In Libra, the way Sol expresses itself is influenced by the emphasis of the sign concerned with not only relationship but also the imperative to be active in seeking balance.

Thus, this particular air sign trine would seem to be a good thing on the whole with our expressed self-hood, tempered by a concern for equity and supporting the manifestation of our relationship to the collective. This aspect holds the promise of allowing us to see both sides, the one we occupy and the other literally dissolving the difficulties standing in the way of compromise and compassion.

So the difference between yesterday and today may have something to do with moving beyond how we think and putting it into action by how we exist in the lives of others.

And this prepares us for the Full Moon how? Yesterday and today, Chiron and Neptune were the constants, the point of reference. Mercury and the Sun were the variables, the two sides, inside and out, that were experienced from that constant point of reference.

This Friday, Venus will be one constant. The opposition of the luminaries will be the other. The variable will be the axis along which the opposition takes place because the first degree of any given sign is a very different territory from its last. Literally two sides of a single expression. That’s where we will pick up on Thursday.

Between now and then, the applying conjunction that expressed itself so powerfully last week will exact itself at last. Tomorrow, from our perspective, Ceres and Pluto will finally come together in Capricorn. Ever since the vernal equinox, Ceres has been on the scene but thanks to a retrograde station last April, it has never quite linked up with its fellow dwarf planet, which has become the repository of the cardinal point continuum. Now that which speaks to the surface, where growth and nourishment take place, will join with that which represents the realm of metamorphosis and transformation. From all indications, this will be an auspicious occasion that will add further meaning to today’s and Friday’s aspects. See you on the other side.

  1. I have been really pulled every which way today more than I can remember having this experience. Push-me-pull-you from every direction. Not bad or stress, just too many ways to go and not finding strength in any direction. Not my cup o tea to be this. Maybe I’m feeling a little like your clutter, Be!

So Focus on your piece, Len has been near impossible – BUT I know that this statement seems to sum up a lot of what I am living of late:

“This aspect holds the promise of allowing us to see both sides, the one we occupy and the other literally dissolving the difficulties standing in the way of compromise and compassion.”

My ears and patience have been opening to what other’s are feeling – more and more. It is sometimes a bit of a difficult exercise, as I’m so tapped into reading people’s energy – this is something different than that. If is a “dissolving”. Yep. That’s a good word. Dissolving.

  2. Len,

We all know that astrology works every day, whether we “know it” or not. Yet, sometimes it is breath-taking how you nail it down in such a personal way. Take today.

I was telling a friend that my brother and sister-in-law were coming for a visit on Thursday and would be taking back with them some furniture and other things I’m releasing (an attempt to appease Pluto before he opposes my Sun!). I said that I thought it was a talent to be able to re-create for him the home our mother kept when we were kids. This requires that I hide a lot of stuff in the bedroom which is off-limits to them. Living in a small space makes functioning well appear as clutter, so to create the illusion (he’s a Virgo and she has a Virgo moon) necessitates a lot of deception on my part.

Now, you say “things can open up and become with little or no effort” (trine), and “Sun represents our creative expression “. . ., and “In Libra concerned with relationships, seeking balance”. True and spot on.

However, the near-miss conjunction of Chiron and Neptune in Aquarius is “synchronous with an opportunity to see through self-deception and the deception of others” has me a little worried. You don’t suppose they are going to get into my bedroom, do you?

    Then there’s the Ceres-Pluto thing . . . . . .

While Scorpio Venus is squaring my Moon, she’s still trining my Sun and I’m hoping for the best. Just pray this FM conjunct my Saturn doesn’t expose me too much!
