The Number Three — Uranus Station Retrograde

Uranus begins five months of apparent reverse motion through Aries at 1:20 pm EDT tomorrow. That itself is not unusual. This will be the fourth successive year Big Blue has initiated its annual regression from cardinal fire during July. Nevertheless, this particular retrograde station will be distinguished by the implications of what its timing repeatedly and symbolically represents: the number three.

Astrology by Len Wallick

Three, because of the historically significant aspect, a grand water trine, that will perfect just as Uranus stations retrograde.

Three, because of how modern history can be said to have started twice before and may be starting yet again. The first time in correlation with what makes tomorrow’s grand trine significant. The second time in correspondence to the discovery of Uranus.

Precisely as Uranus pivots tomorrow, three other slow-moving planets will be perfecting an aspect without modern precedent, the grand water trine of 2013-14.

The three other planets in question are Jupiter, Saturn and Neptune. The unprecedented nature of their aspect begins with Neptune, the modern ruler of Pisces, where Neptune is now.

Neptune takes over 164 years to go around the Sun, and the zodiac. It spends about 14 years in each sign. That means a century and a half goes by before Neptune returns home to Pisces after having completed its time there.

Pisces is one of three water signs, along with Cancer and Scorpio. Saturn has occupied Scorpio since October 5, 2012. Jupiter entered Cancer three weeks ago. Tomorrow the three planets will be precisely (to within one tenth of one degree) equidistant from each other, 120 degrees apart on a 360-degree circle. Together they constitute an equilateral triangle on the zodiac, hence the word trine.

That does not happen every day. As a matter of fact, it has not happened since the world moved ahead by 11 days in the course of one day.

The last time Neptune traversed Pisces, from 1849 to 1863, Jupiter and Saturn were not positioned so as to complete, even for a single day, a trine like the one perfecting tomorrow. Nor did Jupiter and Saturn fall into place during Neptune’s previous tenure in mutable water at the beginning of the 1700s. Tracing back any farther is problematic because a Pope named Gregory replaced one calendar with another in 1582, an event that some consider the beginning of our modern age.

The transition from the old calendar (established by Julius Caesar) to the Gregorian version most of us use today was not a smooth one. It entailed moving ahead 11 days in the course of one day, and it took 70 years before all the major nations of the western world were with the program. That makes it difficult to say exactly when Jupiter and Saturn were last anchored in a water trine by Neptune from Pisces.

We can say, however, that the discovery of Uranus was just as momentous, if not more so, as Pope Gregory’s game changer.

For thousands of years, for all of history and before, humans had no conception of a Universe more complex than the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn and stars. The occasional comet or meteor were here and gone, only perturbing for a moment what had always been and what, it seemed, would always be.

With Uranus’s discovery in 1781, what had always been, and what would always be, suddenly and unexpectedly became nevermore. That single event, taking place just as the ancient political order of the western world was being relegated to nevermore by one unprecedented revolution after another, can reasonably be considered a second, or alternative, start for our modern era.

Tomorrow’s convergence of astrological events brings all the players together during what appears to be a third time of momentous endings and beginnings. First, we have a water trine not seen since we don’t know when, because of how the very definition of ‘when’ was altered. Second, Uranus, the planet that changed everything above while everything was changing below, itself is changing directions.

Third, two monumental events, both centuries apart and centuries ago, are being implied in the astrology of a single day.

At this point we cannot say how, or even whether, posterity will connect tomorrow with the advent of the Gregorian calendar and the discovery of Uranus. Time, and the perspective it confers, will tell. If there is anything to astrology, however, the convergence of events in repeated correlation with the number three is compelling enough to at least consider the possibility that we are all, together and at once, experiencing a third beginning and a third conclusion in the course of modern history.

  1. be and P.Sophia,
so interesting your exchange about Sabian Symbols.
But, if I have the Sun at 20° 32′ of a sign, for example, this would send me directly to the symbol quoted in ’20-21′ in Cafeastrology, wouldn’t it? I mean, when you are right in the middle of a degree like this, can the preceeding and following symbols apply too? (it would be a nice evolution).
    Thanks! Love.

  2. Be, I cannot say how thankful I am to you for all you share here.

I had always read the Sabian Symbols for transitions and to my natal planets to that degree, but read on either side to feel the progressions. But it is true for the most part I felt more drawn to the higher degree, particularly regarding my natal and Rudhyar’s interpretations. After our discussion last night, with this new insight I went round my chart ASC, MC degrees, and all the cross points, inner planets with this new perspective to the Symbols. I know it may seem a small adjustment, but I cannot tell you how the new degrees and Rudhyar’s interpretations liberated me. The light ignited, is how it felt. Also, it showed me once again the value of keeping an open mind. And how an objective perspective always offers so much more potential than expectations, as apposed to the subjective view, where I sometime inadvertently keep myself. : )

  3. Exactly P. Sophia, for example Tuesday’s New Moon is at 0 Aquarius 06, but in Dane Rudhyar’s “An Astrological Mandala” there are no zero’s under the 12 signs, they all start with one’s. To find the Sabian Symbol for the New Moon at 0+ Aquarius you have to read Aquarius 1, “An Old Adobe Mission in California”. However I’m not a stickler for hard and fast rules for everything and I like your “either side” approach to viewing a planet’s position, especially when it is only six (arc) minutes into a degree. So, using this example, I would also incorporate the previous Sabian Symbol for 30 Capricorn (who in blue blazes has a planet at 30 degrees of anything?) which is “A Secret Meeting Of Men Responsible For Executive Decisions In World Affairs”. After all, Rudhyar emphasizes the cyclical nature of the symbols; a process to move through. Common sense would make it reasonable that if a planet had just been in the previous degree, it’s effects could linger a while as the new degree becomes familiar to the planet residing there. Say until it gets to 0 Aquarius 23 or so. 🙂

Thanks for making a dent in my old rote-controlled process of chart study P. Sophia!!

  4. Be, ok, thank you for your patience, my apologies. i am blaming it on the Moon ingressing my 3rd. I also think I read your explanation too quickly. So to understand are you saying to the degree to where the planet lies read one degree ahead? Is this because we start at 0 degrees in a sign? Why does Cafeastrology and others give a variance for each between degrees?

Your right “a little off track”, in this case was a good thing. Thank you.

  5. Hi Be: love all you add and your patience with the learning. Have learned so much from you, sincerely thank you!

Although regarding your comments on the Sabian Symbols, I don’t think the are any steadfast rules. I have seen them interpreted on either side of the degree with variance.

For example: at Cafeastrology on our discussion the show- 20-21 deg Aries as, A Pugilist Enters The Ring. And then, 21-22 deg Aries as, The Gate To The Garden Of All Fulfilled Desires.

I am using them more gently and allowing a flow on either side where intuition is also a guide to me. Seems to work for me. May work different for you.

  6. There’s no doubting it P. Sophia, we are living in a remarkable time frame where the interpretations of the symbols (esp. the feminine symbols) are being re-examined from the broader (no pun intended!) perspective; a less polarized viewpoint than what most of the books on the subject will give us. People like yourself who have personal experiences influenced by the goddesses (via the transits and natal positions of planets, asteroids, etc.) can address modern issues from that newly evolving perspective. Future generations will read about these new viewpoints and profit from them in their own search for understanding, of themselves and of the times they will be living in. Meanwhile, we presently must keep an open mind and learn through our own experiences just what the goddess are trying to convey to us.

The Sabian Symbols can often lend depth to a transit making it even more meaningful in a personal way. However, the confusion about which symbol to apply to the transit (or natal position) can throw us off track. (Sometimes that may be a GOOD thing!) What we need to remember is that if you have a planet at 25 Sagittarius and 01 minute you will need to look at the Sabian Symbol for 26 Sagittarius. On the other hand, the Sabian Symbol for 25 Sagittarius would be for a planet at 24 Sagittarius 59 minutes or less. So in 2011 when Eris was at 21 degrees and so many minutes of Aries, the correct Sabian Symbol would be “The Gate To The Garden Of All Fulfilled Desires” or Aries 22. This year she’s at 22 degrees and so many minutes of Aries so the proper Sabian Symbol would be “A Pregnant Woman In Light Summer Dress”, symbolizing “Inner Fulfillment”. and referred to as Aries 23. It’s maddening, I know, but for all us do-it-yourself researchers into our own (and others) birth charts, it’s worth the trouble. Thanks for sharing P. Sophia.

  7. Fe, I think I can somewhat understand the pressure the aspects have been manifesting for you. Yes, the water trines help; they’re easing things for me also.

I’ve been feeling unusually cranky, with Mercury stationing right on my ascendant, while Mars & Jupiter approach in my 12th. I have such a hard time grasping 12th house stuff – but one thing that’s been coming through is that I have been the author of the loneliness about which I’ve been cranky! AND I need to accept that (ah, but I don’t have to like it!). Understanding why would also be useful.

The ongoing Uranus/Pluto squares have been forming a T-square with my 4th house Neptune (more acceptance – the “perfect” place/lifestyle needs some serious re-visioning/downsizing) – & the Cancer planets are turning the T into a grand square. Oh, boy!!

I used to be more vulnerable to absorbing others’ energies, I suspect because I was the “feeling” person in a family of non-water people who preferred to avoid expressing feelings. I try to avoid those who are addicted to drama or express endless frustration/blaming while doing nothing to change. Sometimes, I simply must remember
“shields up” when I find myself unavoidably among them.

There’s an ongoing feeling of a lot going on “out there” – I always said I wanted to live in “interesting times.” We seem to have them. Best wishes to all as we navigate along our paths.

  8. Edit, my mistake. I was reading the wrong degree for the 2011 Saturn transit in opposition Eris transit degree. I referred to my natal which is at 15 Scorpio instead of the transit which was at Libra 15 degrees 39′ or, 16 .

The opposition degree and Sabian Symbol (which speaks about the necessary Reconstruction and Repair) correction is here:

    In Opposition To –
(LIBRA 16°): AFTER A STORM A BOAT LANDING STANDS IN NEED OF RECONSTRUCTION.
KEYNOTE: The need to keep in operation steady links between the vast Unconscious and the ego-consciousness.

  9. Hi Be: yes I understand.

At that time Eris was transiting Aries 21 degrees 28′ 10″ and in opposition to Saturn’s transit in Libra at 15 degrees 39′ 3″ is O-5.

On a personal level, I see on the ingress in 2011 I also had Jupiter conjunct my natal Eris…which makes sense with it’s influence for me.

On the Mundane level, I beleive the oppositions in comparison relate to the positions and their potential today. Two years, only one degree, yet holds the potential to a perspective of whole different world. But you may see it differently.

March 11, 2011- Eris degree Sabian:
(ARIES 21°): A PUGILIST ENTERS THE RING.
KEYNOTE: The release and glorification of social aggressiveness.

    In Opposition To –
(SCORPIO 15°): CHILDREN PLAYING AROUND FIVE MOUNDS OF SAND.
KEYNOTE: Early steps in the development of a mind seeking to be attuned to the higher level of human evolution.

    July 17, 2013 – Eris degree Sabian:
(ARIES 22°): THE GATE TO THE GARDEN OF ALL FULFILLED DESIRES.
KEYNOTE: Abundance made possible by human togetherness and cooperation.

    In Opposition –
(SCORPIO 4°): A YOUTH CARRIES A LIGHTED CANDLE IN A DEVOTIONAL RITUAL.
KEYNOTE: The educative power of ceremonies which impress the great images of a culture upon its gathered participants.

  10. be – AAaaaaa – this is making my head explode! My first thought is that if anyone needs proof that there’s an order to the Universe, why the hell wouldn’t they just look to the planets? I love your ‘dichotomy full of irony’ observation, and it’s really a lot to think about. You always give so much rich detail that I have to digest it in small bites (you’d make a great French chef). I feel complimented you’ve asked, and I will ponder this one some more. Thank you!

  11. Hey P. Sophia, Saturn won’ transit Libra again until 2039! I was referring to the Uranus entry into Aries chart in 2011, and saying Saturn in general, is welcome in Libra (as he was then) because he is exalted in that sign, and was implying that he could function well there.

Thanks for your info on When Uranus Meets Eris and he was conjunct my Eris last year. Since we both survived Uranus conjunct our natal Eris’s it should be non-traumatic for everyone. Did you realize that transiting Eris will station retrograde in 2 days? We should be able to notice that although what with Uranus stationing retro today it not be clear which one is causing what. Boots Hart (astroPPM) says changes in the status quo can be attributed to Eris who is currently at 22+ Aries.

Fe, I bet you DID feel that Uranus station; glad you are staying away from the toxic folk. I noticed a great calm today too and assumed it was the great grand trine in water, or maybe it was the combination of that and the cessation of a forward moving Uranus. Whatever, it was welcomed.
    be

  12. Len:

    Whoa doggies!

Last night, Uranus stationed exactly conjunct (1 second off) my natal Mars.

Took everything I could to keep people from irritating the shit out of me. Fortunately, I was exhausted enough to be too tired to join in the argument, and brushed folks off.

The trine in early water signs protected my early Pisces ascendant. I remained calm in the midst of the storm. But I have to say I feel more “absorbant” than usual of other people’s toxicity. I feel the most physically and emotionally at ease today around people and situations that are calm and secure. I think I need to surround myself with that to regain a little composure as this retro commences.

It will be interesting to watch when members of the triad start conjuncting natal Uranus and Jupiter in the 5th. Fun times ahead.

  13. Be: I had Saturn in my ASC house and Moon sign Libra 2.5 years. Are you telling me he will Retro back into these degrees / sign from Scorpio?

“Saturn is welcome in the sign of Libra and Jupiter is quite at home in any fire sign. Perhaps it is an exercise in willingness to depend on feminine energy (Venus, Moon) for support in order to find balance (opposition).”

Much of what you say in your evaluation rings true. The period was much about growth and finding feminine balance, and quite literally a reclaiming of feminine structure and thinking patterns for me.

Although in the opposition in Aries perspective don’t forget we had/still have Eris in transit as well. In closer personal study and discovery, and with Eric’s comments regarding, I believe she plays a pivotal role.

In my natal she is also in this sign in my 7th house at Aries 11 degrees. Most people will find their natal Eris in this area. Have a look for your placement. It will only be in houses 5-8 I believe. Anyway Uranus transit in Aries just crossed my natal Eris and is currently moving on positioned at Aries 12 degrees 31′ 19″ .

Regarding Eris and Uranus transit, Lynn Koiner’s Esoteric astrology work and study in this area sheds much light on the reaching of balance to our growth towards reclaiming the feminine:

“Some have experienced a highly transformational event whereby they become estranged from an unpleasant family member — they die or move away. They feel liberated from the guilt and shame that they have always felt.”

And said of Uranus transit crossing natal Eris:

“…a very challenging event that happens, usually suddenly as per Uranus, and transforming with this event liberates us into being who we really are, often allowing us to pursue a dream.”

    http://www.lynnkoiner.com/astrology

Although currently with Uranus transit at the next degree is exact-conjunct my natal Vertex at Aries 12 degrees 14″. This could also be an influence to this aspect.

  14. Amanda, aword, bodymindalchemy, Chief Niwots Son, be, and jinspace: Thank you all so very much.

  15. jinspace, the chart(s) are fascinating and the aspect(s) are too, however my insight into them has barely scratched the surface; more like what awordedgewise said – I have my vantage point. But, you could help me dig out some insight with your thoughts on a couple of things I did observe in Uranus’s mission statement (the ingress charts).

Like in the 2nd entry chart (2011), Venus trined Saturn and the Moon trined Saturn making an air grand trine. At the same time, Venus sextiled Jupiter (who opposed Saturn) and the Moon sextiled Jupiter. What do you make of that? Remember, Saturn in Libra – partnership is the Lone Ranger out in a hemisphere all by himself; 2 or 3 empty houses on each side, whereas Jupiter in Aries-the-Independent is conjunct Mercury who is conjunct Uranus and they are in a hemisphere chock full of other planets. It’s a dichotomy full of irony isn’t it? My only clue (if it is one) is that Uranus is going to be tight with “individual” thinking (Jupiter-Mercury), where partnership matters (Libra) suffer from rigidity (Saturn) or seek form (Saturn). Venus and Moon can/will communicate (air signs) with Saturn with ease, but also provide services to Jupiter.

There is this. Saturn is welcome in the sign of Libra and Jupiter is quite at home in any fire sign. Perhaps it is an exercise in willingness to depend on feminine energy (Venus, Moon) for support in order to find balance (opposition). That just came to me!

  16. Len, it occurred to me that maybe Uranus going retrograde tomorrow was a way to relinquish the stage for the spectacular grand trine in water signs. After all, the ruler of the sign he occupies just went into water sign Cancer too. Each major planet and sign obviously has a role to play in the overall development of evolution and although Uranus has a reputation for dis-regarding rules, it seems he might have more respect for the Universe’s plan.

When Uranus entered Aries for the 1st time in over seven decades on May 27, 2010, the ruler of that Sign, Mars was in Leo and conjunct Child, both at 24 Leo 49. Such was the ultra fiery reception for Uranus, with all 10 major (or traditional) “planets” scattered throughout the zodiac, in 10 different signs. Uranus made the 1st of those July retrogrades that year and retreated into Pisces to re-evaluate his initial ingress. When he returned 10 months later it reflected a different story altogether. No longer were the major planets spread throughout the chart, but 8 of the 10 were concentrated between 7 Capricorn and 10 Aries, and one of the two “outsiders” was the fast moving Moon soon to re-huddle with the tight-knit 8. No longer was the ruler of Aries making such a bold independent statement as he had the first time Uranus entered his sign. Now Mars was in Pisces, his closest companion, the Sun, was also in Pisces 8 degrees ahead of him. He was, like his companions, setting the stage for Uranus’ major role in the Universe’s plan for the following decade.

Most astrologers agree that the story of a planet’s objective in any sign is told in it’s ingress chart. When there are 2 ingresses, I feel the first one sets the stage or shows what needs to be dealt with regarding the ingressing planet’s stay in that sign. The chart for the second entry, to me, shows how that planet will go about dealing with it. When Uranus entered Aries on March 11, 2011, all the (major) planets save Saturn and the Moon were contained within an 87 degree orb. The signs where this energy was concentrated were for the most part in the signs associated with the societal quadrant, Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces. It was Uranus and Mercury and Jupiter that occupied the first 10 degrees of Aries, the first sign of the quadrant associated with individuality, or new beginnings.

That being said, there was an opposition between the isolated Saturn in Libra to Jupiter, reflecting the mid point of their 20 year cycle which will be ending late in December 2020. Although Uranus will leave Aries for good by March, 2019, he will be playing out his role in what could be that third start of modern history. And even though this pattern of a massive opposition to Saturn (who represents governments and all structures) applies to the whole planet, there is a sublime message for the USA. That being the position of Mars, the ruler of Aries where Uranus will be until 2019, in the 2nd ingress chart. At 13+ Pisces, he trines the U.S. Sibly Sun at 13+ Cancer, just as transiting Chiron does now at 13+ Pisces. In the ingress chart set for Washington DC, the MC is at 13+ Cancer. As all the transiting planets have crossed over that important point, much has happened in the USA. We wait for Mars and Jupiter to also leave their symbolic mark in the not so distant future.

  17. Uranus will station retrograde (12 Aries 31’19” Rx) in a fire trine aspect pattern with two main belt asteroids, Arachne (12 Sagittarius 29’57” Rx) and Hybris (12 Leo 1’57”).

ARACHNE: Intricate detail; creation of intrigue and entanglement; layered complications/meanings; entrapment; contact with weaving, knitting, macrame, woven fabric/thread, spider webs, network.

HYBRIS: Expectation, glass-ceilings, limits—what one future-paces as their fate, their slot in life—and what can be expected of others; what others, parents, you see as “your fate;” conditioned limitations.

  18. Len- We are working with large cycles of time, and the place that some humans created for themselves within time by constructing a calendar. That 11 day shift also knocked the calendar out of alignment with the visible cycles of time (solstices and equinox’s), but then again religious organizations show a continual willingness to ignore reality in favor of their pet projects.

On a personal note, the info about tomorrow’s astrology gives me guidance for writing a pivotal email. Thank you.

  21. You know Len, this may very well be the explanation for my up-the-down-staircase and through-the-rabbit-hole time and place experiences of late. I’m not documenting them nor being analytical. I figure the best approach is to ‘not approach’ and rather to simply go along as the sands of time do their shape-shifting.

Thank you much; simple, eloquent, clear – just what’s needed in a moment when all could appear to be what it’s not or not be what it appears it is. Or simply be lost in an 11-day glitch.
