Of Passion and Energy — Mars Trine Uranus

Mars continues to forge its Leo legacy with a fire trine to the Aries lair of retrograde Uranus, exact just before 5 pm EDT Saturday. The image is of passion and energy flowing effortlessly from you to the rest of the world. The question is what will become of it. The apparent motion of Mars through Leo, exceeding half a degree a day right now, implies the answer will be a matter of timing — your timing in particular.

Astrology by Len Wallick

Timing begins with awareness. If you want to time your crossing of a thoroughfare so as to assure your safety, you need to look up from your texting and look both ways down the street.

Now that you know when the impending fire trine from Mars to Uranus will be exact, you have some awareness already. Assuming you want to make the most this formidable, if ephemeral aspect, the next step is to extend awareness into appropriate action.

You can build on awareness by developing a strategy to determine your options as they come up. That way, you can act appropriately in time with an opportune moment. It’s self-made luck, which is the only kind of luck when you get right down to it. That’s what astrology is for, and the trine from Mars to Uranus this weekend is an excellent chance to make it work, both for you, and for the role you will be timed to play in determining the shape of posterity.

In order to make any aspect work for you, you must break it down and put it together again so as to enhance your awareness. You can start with the constituent planets.

“Mars,” in the words of Robert Hand “is an energy planet.” Because it is also among the so-called personal planets that repeat cycles many times in a human lifetime, it is reasonable to expand on Mr. Hand’s idea by assuming that Martian energy manifests as personal energy — specifically yours.

No two people handle their manifestation of Mars the same way. Nevertheless, you can realistically posit two kinds of people. There are those who master, direct and control their personal energy, and there are those who are hopelessly, haplessly, helplessly run by it. From that you can presume that self control will be the cornerstone of your strategy for the Mars-Uranus trine, starting now.

Starting now because Mars is known for going off prematurely as it approaches an aspect. So think of today as a shift from the “slow burn” that Eric used to characterize the Mars-Saturn square that is now separating, a time to prepare some options that will give Martian energy in a higher gear something to do besides spin your wheels. Specifically, giving it a chance to synchronize with Uranus.

Uranus is energetic as well, but in a way different from Mars. As one would expect from its unanticipated discovery in 1781, the energy of Uranus is more novel than that of Mars. Uranus is commonly accepted to correspond with Aquarius as the modern ruler of the sign most commonly associated with the collective. It is therefore reasonable to attribute some of that novelty to the relatively recent (in a historical sense) galvanization of the collective as a force in the world.

Before the American and French revolutions, which bracketed the discovery of Uranus, the very idea of the governed organizing into a collective in order to assert control over their government was a novel idea. For many, it still is.

Even in the United States, even now, many people consider obsequious obedience to be a greater virtue than asserting the idea that self control is just as essential to the welfare of the collective as it is to the well being of the individual. The applying fire trine from Mars to Uranus comes during a time testing whether the forms of governance manifested of that idea, passionately and energetically conceived concurrent with the discovery of Uranus, can long endure. That’s where you, and your timing, come in.

Mars (an emblem of personal energy), and Uranus (a symbol of collective energy) now have in common the passionate garment of elemental fire. For a short time centered on this weekend, the uninhibited flow implied by a common element will hence connect your personal energy, and what you do with it, with the energetic potential you share in community, country and ultimately, all creation.

Your contribution to that connection, no matter how small or seemingly insignificant, will thus serve to determine far more than you might think. If you show yourself to be incapable of self control at this crucial moment in history, you will be contributing energy to those who would deem you (and the rest of us, and generations to follow) unworthy of participating in collective self-control.

Ask yourself, is that sort of consequence consistent your life’s passion? Is that what you want to do with your energy?

Don’t kid yourself either. If there is anything to the plainly delineated constituency, placement and timing of Saturday’s fire trine from Mars to Uranus, what you do with your energy now will make a difference, and not just for you. It will make a difference for your lovers, family, neighbors, and those unmet and unborn for years to come. So, even if it is your place to act but locally in the days to come, please consider it a time as never before to think globally as the strategy that will guide what options you act on and how you act on them.

  1. Bkoehler or Len, could you please tell me where I could get more info on the asteroid Magdalena? My birthday is Sept. 22 (29 Virgo) and I have been studying the Magdalene energy for many years but not from the astrological perspective. I would love to learn more.
    Thank you.

  2. Tai Ji in the park continues to evolve. This morning yet another teacher who I’d met but never had any deep interaction with stopped to adjust my stance, directing me to lower my hands and turn the palms toward lower dan tian. Oh my, the emotions stuck there are a scared 6 year old I’ve held in suspended animation for 33 years. Letting my hands float there I could feel the flow of qi penetrating the cage. Then push hands where he directed me to not allow my shoulders to collapse, to strengthen the bear so that my structure stays solid when the dragon spins. His instructions were so simple it cut through my webs of monkey thoughts, arguments, but this, but that…I realized suddenly, like a seed sprouting that’s been gestating for years that internal martial arts instructors speak to what you can be when you relax, not to the fear that wants to argue. A good teacher won’t argue, they’ll just point to the way and let you find it or not. “But I’ve been stuck for years, it’s hard..whaaaaa…” just relax.

  3. Firehorse: Thank you. Now that you have received the poem it is no longer mine. It is for all of us.

Chief Niwots Son: Thank you. I hope you do not mind that I have spoken to all of the sons and daughters of Chief Niwot through you today. Your response brings me much joy.

bkoehler: I too am interested in the symbolism of asteroid 318 Magdalena as she sits at 29+ conjunct 1247 Memoria in Scorpio in my natal chart. Understanding the embodiment of the feminine divine and masculine divine is, I think, one of the most significant challenges of our time.

Len: Thank you. I offer my gratitude and appreciation for the route your words have led us to take.

  4. beleclaire: Thank you for your sweet words, I am honored that my words have touched you in a good way.

    Hazel1: You’re welcome.

nilou: Two of the many dates on which “hell fell from the skies.” Your poetry is potent and reaffirming.

Firehorse: We got your hurricane, the water that goes into our aquifers here and downstream will be a blessing. Your horse tribe has the vitality to ride through difficult circumstances to a better tomorrow, keep the fire stoked.

Strawberrylaughter: May your healing be interesting and easy. Enjoy the waters.

  5. Hey Len, this is off-topic but I wanted to give you a shout-out-thank-you for info I got from an earlier offering of yours from last December. Around the time of the 50 year anniversary of the March on Washington, I left a response (on PlanetWaves) regarding the asteroid Magdalena, and ever since then I’ve been trying to get a better grasp on her symbolism. You said back then it was “straightforward” and represented “how the divine and the feminine are inseparable”, and, after much research (without spending any money of course!) I believe you best get to the heart of her interpretation.

Currently, Magdalena is at 1 Cancer and sextile Vesta at 1+ Virgo, and today these ladies form a yod with choreographer Terpsichore in Aquarius. But my (most recent) reason for wanting to go deeper into Magdalena’s meaning is that at the upcoming Libra Equinox (9/22), Magdalena will be conjunct the U.S. Sibly Venus at 3+ Cancer, along with transiting Hades, also at 3+ Cancer. This means she will add greater meaning to the on-going trine between the U.S. Venus and transiting Neptune at 3+ Pisces retrograde.

Adding to that, Magdalena (+ trans. Hades) will sextile Apollo at 3+ Virgo in the Equinox chart. Since Apollo is associated with the Sun (who symbolizes conscious awareness), that should have some bearing on this new seasonal period which the equinox chart portrays; specifically in the U.S. Furthermore, in the Equinox chart Magdalena+Hades-sextile-Apollo form a yod to transiting Juno at 3+ Aquarius, who rather pointedly suggests it’s about married women who are not treated with equal respect. As these are all minor entities in astrology’s symbolism (for the moment anyway), I don’t expect this to manifest as headline news, especially since Neptune (disguise) will trine Magdalena (and Hades and the U.S. Venus).

Anyway, I will be looking for the Magdalena signature in any news that DOES surface regarding this topic of under-recognized marriage partners of the feminine persuasion. Let me know if you see or hear of something and once again, thanks for giving me a better handle on Magdalene.

  6. Chief Niwots Son: Thank you for the insight. I have been wrestling as of late with an existential grief and part of that feels like the knot you speak of – another avenue to explore. I take it you are in my home state of Colorado. It’s ironic that I now live in Florida and it seems as though you guys are getting the hurricane weather out there. Be safe!

nilou: thank you for the beautiful poem. It touches my heart and is an answer to my personal quest of “home”. I have Pisces on the 4th house, and am experiencing the approach of my Chiron return, which also happens to be conjunct Saturn. Your poem helps me in the seemingly impossible task of finding form in Pisces. I have struggled my entire adult life searching for home, having moved every few years. Your poem expresses where home really resides. Thank you, and if you don’t mind I will use it for a writing prompt.

  7. Son of Chief Niwot:

    Sand Creek – November 29,1864
    Morant Bay – October 11, 1865

What hell was it that fell from the skies?
And yet, you and i, we made it.
    We are here now.
Yes, there is much to be done –
much to heal and be healed.
    But how?
I live and refuse to die.
I grieve and refuse to die.
I love life and I shall live
knowing we are all in this together.

  8. Strawberrylaughter:

Enjoy those hot springs! I’m in the rain here in New Mexico, enjoying it immensely, but then I’m not being flooded out. The skies did indeed open this week and much of the rain I’ve been in has been of the raining mist variety that sinks in and helps instead of tearing trees out of the ground. It’s supposed to dry out and heat up here next week so all this will just be a good memory though. Maybe this is practice for the astrological water coming next month.

Chief Niwots Son: I appreciate your comment about incarnating selves facing the potential of not making it “in” alive. And how a fear of something that didn’t even happen can live on as if it did. Thank you.

  9. Chief Niwots Sun – I realise your words are intended primarily for Strawberrylaughter yet I wanted to tell you what a profund effect they had on me. Thank you..it is not just what you say but everything else that is carried along with those words.
    I honour your wisdom.
With so many incarnations where things have not ‘gone right’, where failure has been the norm, it is difficult to trust that maybe this life, this time, things can be different.

  10. Home – here and now

Home is the place where i live in my nakedness
it is a place where my vulnerabilities are protected
from the ravages of a weeping world
home is the salty lavender soaking of a deep bath
    that washes away
    the detritus of another day
home is the pigment i smooth with my fingertips into a blank page
that i keep lest i forget the joy and peace
and rhythmical pace and expansive space, of home
where anything can be made real.
home is where i have no need of understanding.
home is the place where my mind
has respite on seeing sunshine reflected
on a drop of water on a window pane
    home is the chord change
that sends vibrations down my spine
the tang on my tongue, the heat in my throat, of a vintage wine
home is the smell of cut grass
a bird moving fast above my head
the fragrance of a pink rose visiting me
the oily softness of a moonlit sea
home is the dream i carry that carries me
home is a small candle lit in the dark night
home is knowing what is right
    for me
home is this moment shared with eternity
    and you.

  11. Chief Niwots Son: Thank you for your informed insights as regards to how hierarchal governance models came to be, and how alternative models are both available and potentially adaptable so as to provide solutions. Even if better solutions are not ready-made, and available off the shelf, there is no reason to think that they cannot be made to happen through the creative process of combining energy and insight as you described. May the experience with water in your area of residence reveal its blessings once the hardships have passed, and the skies have cleared once again.

starrynight 3: You are welcome. Thank you in turn for proposing a very useful, and reasonable approach towards availing ourselves of the Martian energy.

beleclaire: You are most welcome as well. Thank you as well for sharing your practical mantra. May it serve you and others a i have sought to serve.

be: Thank you for your affirmation, which is very welcome at this time. The do-able that assuages, rather than provokes, chagrin and anxiety is indeed the perpetual aim of my service. Thank you also for citing both courage as a Martian attribute and balancing as one benefit of a trine aspect – those are not small things, and well kept in mind. Thank you also for affirming Chef Niwots Son. May the team of your choice enjoy a victory that serves to inspire, rather than discourage their opponent.

karena: It is gratifying to know that you find encouragement in my service. It is another one of my perpetual aims.

aword: May your anxiety find where and how it may be soothed and transformed into resolve towards finding healing and providing you with ways to make it happen. Thank you so very much once again for sharing how the transits to your exceptional personal astrology manifest in such a way as to provide useful insights for all of us.

DivaCarla: It gives me joy to know that my service has helped you to begin unlocking an apparently intractable mystery. Thank you for your kind words.

Hazel1: It appears as though you have been doing some creative unlocking of your own. Congratulations on your realization that what you thought was going on is not necessarily so. So often, the answer is somewhere in between, which is in itself another realization that serves to expand consciousness. Thank you for serving to expand our consciousness.

Strawberry: Thank you for affirming both Hazel1 and Chief Niwots Son with both an open heart and an open mind . Special thanks for your personal validation. Good choice as regards to the water – may it soothe and serve you.

  12. …and I, too, will be at a hot springs next week. It just seemed like the right time. 😉 I need water.

  13. Chief Niwots Son, that’s the third time I’ve heard myself called thorough in as many weeks–I may have to begin believing it! 😉 Especially since I know that knot. Very well. This makes the coming week about a thousand times more interesting. May your weekend’s healing work be as fruitful as I expect my own to be.

  14. Strawberrylaughter: Thank you for your kind words, I know you are thorough in your inner work, so your reports are never belated.

As often happens when I read your words more comes forward to be shared- in the earliest stages in the biological journey of coming into our body, there are places where our incarnating self faces the potential of not making it ‘in’ alive. These biological transitions are places where the fear of failure can become deeply imprinted into the web of our being, before our nervous system forms, before our cells divide, even before our very conception.

In the face of the fundamental question of existence, the most important thing I can tell you is this: You made it. You are here, alive, now. And the deepest fear is of something that did not happen, yet it still lives within as if it did. This is a deep knot, in the heart, in the belly, deeper than your breath. And- you are here, alive, now.

We have had more rain in 3 days than in any single month since folks started measuring the rainfall here. Perhaps retro Mercury in water signs is not such a bad thing after all! Happily, I will be in the rectangle just north of here next week, drying out in the hot springs and sharing healing work.

  15. Hazel1, where have you been all my life!? Once again, a turn of phrase so perfectly encapsulates my life: “…versus what I thought was going on.” Not a tattoo, this time, but I so hear you & wish you nothing but the best with this new perspective.

And Chief Niwots Son, I wanted to thank you for your insights about the light body a while ago…belated, perhaps, but only because they sent me deep. Mars square Saturn has served, more than anything, to show me just where I’m deeply rooted in a fear I haven’t yet named. Useful information with Uranus now coming into the mix. I can’t yet see it, but I know what it looks like, now.
It appears your part of the country is having its ancient mariner moment. Do stay dry, or maybe it’s practice for the astrological water yet to come next month!

And Len, as always, your contribution is far from insignificant.

  16. Mars and Uranus will be able to chime off my natal moon, I think, or something near that. I’ve wanted/needed a change in the way I live my emotional/”romantic” life, and I’ve had some good (and to me, very new) ideas about what’s possible there as well as what’s actually going on in that area versus what I thought was going on. I’ll keep my mind and ears and eyes open. I’ve noticed the element of “timing” more than usual the past week or so, like I’m coming out of a fog and I see connections and details much better. Thanks Len, this post is something for me to chew on!

  17. Natal Mars is all alone in Taurus, and has been a mystery to me. Somehow reading about this Uranian trine helps me understand it more. Mars in Taurus ignites all my earth, the planets in earth, and the rulers of the earth signs. Makes sense that I am so earth identified, as in mud, rocks, dirt, compost, and grounding. Thanks again for a way of writing and teaching that illuminates so much more than just what your words say, Len.

  18. Thank you, Len. I’m feeling a good bit of anxiety just now – perhaps transiting Mars crossing natal Uranus trine transiting Uranus has a bit to do with that. I’m grateful for your teaching today; very useful for understanding current energy.

  19. This is encouraging 🙂 I am going to circulate a petition at area farmers markets to Ban Fracking in our state. Forgoing anxiety and putting my shoulder to the wheel to get some energy sparked within our community to protect our environment. There isn’t anyone else in my county who is doing this, so I figure I’m the one to get the message out there and gather support. I have the time, I have the passion and I have the voice. And I have the wonderful insight gained through reading your column. Thanks Len 🙂

  20. As you do so often (if not always) in your writings Len, you have made astrology symbols, working within aspect to one another, applicable to our own lives. Your suggested methods of applying the combinations of energy are always advised with the wisdom and care of a loving teacher or parent; they seem doable and without causing any chagrin or anxiety within your readers. So often we read about astrology as something symbolizing sure disaster, which is why – at least in part – it has gotten a bad reputation in some quarters.

On the other hand, astrology gets a bad reputation (in some quarters) because it provides the devotee too much self-direction and power. Therefore, you are a brave soul to encourage this understanding in individuals; where in some cases that encouragement is desperately needed. Bravery is surely attributable to the symbol Mars, and even more so when Mars is in Leo I would think. Aries, the sign he rules, is typically thought to be about the individual newly aware of his own powers, needing to repeatedly prove himself, and at it’s most base level, without thinking much about how proving him or herself affects others. I should think some of that will be (with this Mars trine Uranus aspect) displayed over the weekend. However, even though Mars has a great deal of influence over the guest in his sign, Uranus, the Aquarian nature of Uranus will surely be subconsciously directing the collective energy this planet symbolizes.

With the sign Aquarius opposite the sign of Leo, I get the feeling that there will be a bit of a push-pull balancing effort when these two planets form their trine on Saturday. From a conscious level, it might appear to be a self-driven push (Mars being a personal planet) only, but with the Aquarian nature being on the other end of the axis from Leo and as well, part of the ingrained Uranus energy influence, it could break up (unconsciously) that Martian energy into a humanitarian/societal/cultural outcome. With Aquarius’ reputation for being above any overt display of individuality, and it being a trine (no stress) aspect, and fire symbolizing a spiritual urge, the resultant affect could very well be something like what Chief Niwots Son has suggested; a realignment (on many levels) of government power. Or it could be a surprise victory in the Univ. of Louisville vs the Univ. of Kentucky football game. Or both!

  21. Thank you Len for another thought provoking piece.

Mars looks like the most heavily aspected personal planet at the moment so I hope the Uranus trine can blaze a trail through all the earth and water. It is saying to me initiate new ways of expressing your heart’s desire. I think I might have that as a mantra for a couple of days!

  22. Thank you Len. I am literally trying to direct and contain my personal energy right now. What to say no to seems to be the theme. I want to say yes to everything but that just serves to scatter my energy as I’ve learned from the past.

  23. “Before the American and French revolutions, which bracketed the discovery of Uranus, the very idea of the governed organizing into a collective in order to assert control over their government was a novel idea.”

A rich article as always Len, and another reading or two will be required for me to absorb it all. Yet I wish to make note of this piece you shared, and to offer a larger perspective.

Hierarchal governments seem to be a disease that evolved in agrarian cultures, and one which has become so deeply engrained in our culture that we still battle with it even in our “democracy.” Even today those at the top of our democratic hierarchy work to control those of us who appear to be lower down the food chain.

That said, there are many cultures than never suffered this fate, the indigenous people’s in many parts of the world maintained a much more balanced sense of leadership in their communities. They never had to assert control over their government, because they truly were their government. The question now is how to make this work on the larger scales of humanity that are bound together in our seemingly infinite interrelationships. Can the energy of Mars combine with the unprecedented nature of Uranus to provide insight? Now would be a good time for this to happen.

On a personal note going back to your “open the sky” post, we’ve had over 6 inches of rain in the last day or so in my area, a huge amount of rain for the western edge of the great plains. The nearby mountains are shedding water through narrow canyons, which has caused some destruction and even the loss of a human life. Too much of a blessing can turn itself on it’s head.
