My, How You’ve Grown! The Centaur-Sagittarius New Moon

The Sagittarius New Moon on Monday at 7:22 pm EST will be a precise conjunction of the luminaries (Sun and Moon), as all New Moons are. Making this particular New Moon unique will be two centaur objects: Orius, in the same degree of Sagittarius as the luminaries, and Chiron, squaring the triple conjunction of Sun, Moon and Orius from Pisces. All told, that configuration indicates a good time to give thanks for how much you have grown this year.

Astrology by Len Wallick

What’s more, probability favors the new lunar cycle (or “lunation”) initiated by Monday’s New Moon will promote even further growth between now and next year, provided you can embrace what growth is.

Growth is not easy. No matter who, now matter how, the easiest path is to avoid growing. It is by far easier to remain the same. That’s the paradox of both centaur objects and square aspects for astrology.

Square aspects correlate to when you are put on the spot, requiring you to do something for relief. More often than not, whatever action you take to get off the spot has a fringe benefit. Usually the act of relieving the tension associated with a square aspect leaves you stronger, more resourceful and more confident than before. That’s growth. It’s not easy, but you are better off for the effort.

Centaur objects, like Chiron and Orius, correspond to a more subtle (though no less powerful) form of tension — that of carrying a burden. It’s like putting yourself on the spot wherever you are, whatever you are doing.

Resolving the burdens associated with centaurs is thus more complex than just acting to resolve tension. A bigger, more specific response is required of you. Nevertheless, growth takes place when you deal with the weighty matter in question, defining (or re-defining) your very being as result. That’s growth too, in a more evolved form.

That is also how it makes sense that there are more centaurs (17 formally named so far) than types of square aspects (basically three: cardinal, fixed and mutable squares). Being confronted by a greater complexity of stimulus requires a more specific set of responses.

Orius was named less than a year ago, in January of 2013, following its discovery in April of 2009. Because it was discovered during our first full year of Pluto in Capricorn since Benjamin Franklin was pulling strings (of kites and otherwise), it is an object signifying the complex stimuli of our current historical and astrological era.

Shortly following its naming, Philip Sedgwick (one of astrology’s foremost authorities on centaur objects) concluded that the scant mythology behind the name was of little use for astrology. Based upon “understanding derived from astronomical data” however, Mr. Sedgwick was able to convincingly correlate Orius with one of the greater, and more common, burdens of our era for you and everybody else at once — the need for “a clear distinction between worth and worthiness.”

A lot of importance is placed on material worth, almost to the exclusion of everything else. You probably know the feeling of unworthiness that goes with lack of money or material goods. Yet, those who are celebrated for their economic worth are seldom worthy of your trust, which says volumes right there.

The burdensome discrepancy between being a worthy person with no money as opposed to a wealthy person whom you would not trust with a trust is a complex dilemma that requires more than a single act to relieve. It requires your discernment of when and how to distinguish yourself according to worthiness as a priority (unless you actually want the greater burden of being untrustworthy, which only money can buy).

To have the Sun and Moon conjoin (for a New Moon) in the same degree of Sagittarius as Orius thus indicates your probable best practice for growth for the lunation to follow. The mutability of Sagittarius encourages even the most penurious to evolve while there is still time. The symbolism of Sagittarius’ elemental fire, in turn, provides both the passion to persevere and the idealistic emphasis to overcome what the square to Chiron indicates.

The square aspect received by the Sagittarius triple conjunction from Chiron’s Pisces placement represents the part about growth not being easy. Chiron itself is not easy, among other things corresponding to the complexity of maturing to re-define yourself as somebody who can do more than just acquire (or provide) money and other forms of material wealth while still pulling your own weight and helping those less fortunate.

When you consider how so many ‘successful’ people end their lives with plenty on the outside and an empty feeling on the inside, you get an idea of just how heavy the burden can be.

When you look at how many others disavow a life solely devoted to acquisition so as to receive more than they give, it will give you an idea of how you should act to get off the spot that immediacy puts you on next week. Act with the New Moon so as to realize the greater promise of extending your growth this year though the rest of the month. Act so as to end this year will fewer regrets even if it means less material gain. What you gain by defining yourself as more wealthy on the inside will more than make up for it.

  1. Thank you Len for your article, Chiron in the shadow of this new moon asks us to become aware of the injury, it cannot assert itself in social life without taking as baggage Chiron in our journey…

  2. Len: ‘epiphany of reveries’! Thank you. That sounds like a title. Back to writing for me then…

DivaCarla: I keep hearing rumours that the Sun is in Sagg., but with Saturn transiting Mercury/Neptune natal conjunction i haven’t left the deep blue! At least the seas are calm.

Gratitude and appreciation to all in assembly (especially for the music).

  3. Wishing you every good thing, Mia, and calm critters to boot! And, to echo Chief Niwots Son, it is always a satisfaction to find this sweet spot and, as Len has said, celebrate being part of the Planet Waves family, a place where deep wisdom, heart and creativity is easily found.

In the 90s, the channelers spoke of the coming of Light Islands, although they suggested they would look like (physical) communities; that may be ahead of us or perhaps, more like our own island here in cyberspace, connecting like hearts. I offer my thanks for all of you, today, in true appreciation of our shared unfolding.

  4. This morning I was up early enough to see the thin waning crescent moon while the sky was dark. As sometimes happens the whole face of the moon was dimly illuminated, a ghostly apparition against the background of stars, feeling like the farewell of the passing cycle before the more hopeful future Len articulates in this post.

Later I came here and read the deep sharings and sweet exchanges between you good people, and through it all remembered that the Light never goes away, it is simply renewed again and again through the cycles of time.

Daniel: I’ll echo everyone else by sending you congratulations on your creative flowering, and add my request to hear your piece when the time is right.

  5. Thank you Kari!

And Bon Chance with your stunning website! Amazing year, 2013. So many of us are realizing our dreams, knowing that everyone else is right behind us.

  6. This morning I am driving to Sainte Adele, Quebec to move in with my fiancé. I have never had the dogs and cats in the car at the same time and this should really be a trip. The changes in my life have been monumental over the past year with much loss and much gain. Saturn transited my moon in Scorpio three times beginning just about now last year. Saturn has proven to be a true friend and guide. When the relationship showed up, a relationship was the very last thing on my mind. But, boy did I recognize that something was different about this one. We really do fill in the cracks and spaces for each other. Dorian began writing poetry again after a five year break. Here is a poem written for me:

    To See Them Happy

To see them happy is all we care about.
The we who know such happiness-
The we who gave our hearts back to the world.

Happy at last to be unfettered, at last!
    And free from after-thought-

Happy to receive the deed to ultimate ownership,
The true landlord of our creation.

I have heard it said again today,
‘I am so thrilled to see them happy!’
And it reverberated through flawless eternity.

Just happy to see everything around you
    Blooming, thriving, prospering, advancing-
Well-nourished, with clear blood and complexion,
magnetic, slow to anger, transmuting trouble through
Heart-waves, gathering love from all you meet,
Not talking so much as listening
And impressive only by direct presence.

To see them happy the world over,
Arm in arm, as we have been arm in arm
    On our mystic sojourns.

Every plant and animal and insect-
The rocks, trees, the feet of humanity-
Everthing happy to be itself and happy,
    To be everything else.

    There lies the Mystery!
How meanness and agony extend to Victory!
How we live in time till we can vibrate in stillness,
Faster than light could ever travel,
    Except for Uncreated Light.

(Is it time for a break?
    an experience of joy inconceivable?
We have time, there is no rush.
It is guaranteed! and we know it.)

Biggest lesson learned this year? Be yourself.

Thank you Len, for all you do.

  7. And I so agree with Len when he says this, Daniel, “Please leave yourself open to the possibility (probability?) of relationship. After making so much progress in relationship with yourself, you have most probability increased the probability of attracting the relationship you have sought without success. It’s a big world.” I know I wrote a while back about letting go of the idea of a relationship, but only because things need space to breathe, that things are more likely to happen in that space. As Len said, it’s a big world. In the meantime, good luck with your music would so love to hear something of yours one day, if you ever feel like it.

  8. “This past Scorpio passage has been hell on wheels for us Scorpionic types. I am Scorpio rising, and I see that Saturn is about to bang into my ascendant, in a day or two, on his way to the first rendezvous with Natal Saturn in Scorp. Holy Moly… !!! ” Yes yes!! Thanks for this, DivaCarla, and good luck with it!

Hugs back to ya, dear Daniel!

  9. Len, Lizzy, Strawberry, and DivaCarla: a huge thanks to you, and all ’round warm hugs. I am in such wonderful company, and I’m so inspired to read all your words of your own transformations and experiences recently (and Stormi too). There’s the great quote I recently read again from Lao Tzu: “A good traveler has no fixed plans, and is not intent on arriving.”

  10. Thank you, Len. Because natal Orius is (one of many) personal components to the upcoming New Year’s Cardinal Cross – which Eric wrote about in today’s subscriber edition – I had (ironically) just completed some research on him (Orius) when I read your article. Because of your discussion here, I see that natal Orius is trine this Sagg New Moon conj Orius as well. He clearly has something potent to say during the open doors of these new moons. Thank you, as always, and especially for adding to Phil Sedgwick’s assessment of Orius. You too, Be! Thank you 🙂

  11. suria: My thanks to you in turn for one of the most lyrically cogent comments ever, touching on more than one core truth in a complex, yet specific epiphany of reverie.

DAniel: Congratulations on your creative triumph, and for sharing the process with us. Please leave yourself open to the possibility (probability?) of relationship. After making so much progress in relationship with yourself, you have most probability increased the probability of attracting the relationship you have sought without success. It’s a big world.

stormilarue: Thank you for your comment in support of Daniel.

be: You’ve done it again, and thank you so very much. Starting from the Venus vibe that Phil Sedgwick detected i the orbital characteristics of Orius, then extending that through to the current and impending aspects from Venus, and concluding with a convincing inclusion of asteroid Isis as part of the big picture. Chiron would be more than proud of you.

Lizzy: Thanks to you in turn for your support of Daniel, as well as for sharing the insight of your dream.

Strawberry: Thank you also for your perceptive support of Daniel, the stirring interpretation of transits to your own astrology, and (last but not least) for your generous perception of my service.

DivaCarla: Thank you for expanding upon the theme so wisely and eloquently (accurately too, i believe) with a gracefully composed comment we are grateful to receive here.

  12. This is a potent sentence, Len:
“the easiest path is to avoid growing. It is by far easier to remain the same. That’s the paradox of both centaur objects and square aspects for astrology.”

It sure is! Our neurology favors staying the same, even when the same is painful. Someone wise once said, Our ego doesn’t want us to change.

Yet there is this consciousness, this creative force within us, this Divine Spark embodied through our humanity that says: GROW! CHANGE! MORE LIFE! (I think it is sex)

And depending on the programs we’ve got running from our individual origins, the inner back lash can be horrendous, or not… The struggle, or the allowing, the awareness, the adventure… Woooo hoooo!

So I appreciate that you offer the squares and centaurs as giving us something to get a grip on, as we obey that imperative to grow, even when it’s hard. The concept of the centaurs as being about carrying a burden feels like it has a lot of creative potential. Burdens are often laid on us by others. As children, we pick up the burdens of our parents, or we inherit a legacy of burdens from ancestors, family culture, society. Those keep showing up throughout life, and those square can shine a light on them, on the problems that result from those burdens.

In light of this, Daniel, thanks for sharing your retreat journey. It is great to hear your voice. Congratulations on making the most of your creativity and writing music!

This past Scorpio passage has been hell on wheels for us Scorpionic types. I am Scorpio rising, and I see that Saturn is about to bang into my ascendant, in a day or two, on his way to the first rendezvous with Natal Saturn in Scorp. Holy Moly… !!!

I went underground too. Took a trip on the the underground with the Dark Goddess. We are still there, but I am poking my head up to see if it’s all clear. Similar issues. I am tired of living in reaction to the same old pain and patterns. Two freaking Saturn returns later, I am still running this shit from a sweet little five year old girl who didn’t know anything and drew some erroneous conclusions about what was happening around her.
    Oh, Puh-Leeeze!!!!

Happy to have some help from the sun/moon/orius square chiron energy. I be worthy ;o*. Happy to have some good company in the deeps, Daniel, and all assembled in our PW community.

  13. Len, I appreciate your perspective on the tension illustrated by squares vs that of the Centaurs — the notion of “putting yourself on the spot wherever you are” resonates in a way I can really get my head around. With Orius conjoined my natal MH, I’ve had this issue of worth/worthiness as something of a “deer in the headlights” phenomenon for a very long time. I’d never seen it quite so practically & usefully delineated, though. You always bring it back to earth. Thank you so very much.

  14. Daniel, you’re such an inspiration. Honestly, my heart just breaks & spills all over the place, reading this; I’m so happy to hear you finding this place (not that I was worried about you, I just like you 😉 ). What a true accomplishment to be able to “let that vibration dissolve into an irrelevancy that is liberating and translucent.” It echoes something Elisa said some time ago, about experiencing sense memories as an opportunity to transmute the held energies. Most of the time, I forget, but occasionally, I can get enough distance from the memory to see it as energy to be transmuted into light. I’m so, so happy to see you here.

And of course I’m thrilled to hear about your new score — 17 days! They must’ve been exhilarating. I can only imagine how it felt to pour yourself into your passion that way.

Seeing and offering up the willingness to die to the comfortable & known ways of living & being, has got to be one of the more difficult challenges we face in this life. Our ego can get such a stranglehold on our growth. Thank goodness for the power of the Centaurs. As for the “experience” issue — please try to see that as the age-old, deeply human issue of unworthiness, disguised as a “weakness” unique to you. There’s power in being a blank slate (especially such a Scorpionic one!). You can write your own rules on that slate, rules that will take you places only you can go.

You’re brilliant, hon. And you inspire the hell out of me. Thank you so much for sharing 🙂

  15. Yes, I join Stormi. No time to write much today, but was great to read your comment, Daniel. Go for it my friend! Yes – growth is hard. I love the zen buddhist metaphor of polishing the mirror until you realise that there’s no mirror to polish, but you can’t get to that point before you’e polished the damned thing! Or as Dorothy said, “There’s no place like home!”.

  16. This was worth reading a second time Len, having you tackle the concept of symbol Orius proves just how valuable you are. Even the great Phil Sedgwick left me wanting on the subject. Bringing it to our consciousness has taken a New Moon (starting over) and all that it symbolizes. Having it take place in Sagittarius (growth, understanding) just drives it home. Clarifying the purpose of what centaurs do for us is how you are able to focus on what Orius means to us.

Stepping up to the plate is Chiron who always wants to bring focus to growth even if it hurts. In squaring his fellow centaur Orius he will put us in a position to grow or not to grow, but in Sagittarius consciousness is provided a path, albeit through contemplation.

Here’s a thought to get us started. Phil suggests the Orius meaning (so far) is derived from its connection to Venus and her rulerships of Libra and Taurus. In the New Moon featuring Orius transiting Venus could help us look further into that meaning. Venus in Capricorn (society and the status quo) will be square Eris in Aries (the value of individuality) suggesting a defining (or re-defining) of what is worthy to us as individuals compared to what is worthwhile in being part of society. Have we become out of balance in this area?

This square between the goddesses of discord and love could interact with the square between the centaurs, especially during this holiday season. Chiron in Pisces might symbolize a charitable event conflicting with a purely social event symbolized by the 3 Sagittarians. One event could enhance one’s stature in society while the other could enhance one’s self awareness. Lending a helping hand at this time is Isis who is about to conjunct Eris. Who better to take the pieces of a puzzle and put them in order than Isis?

Isis was pretty clear on what she wanted when (in her myth) she persevered in locating all the scattered parts of her husband (her other half) and re-assembling them. In Aries this suggests a new attempt to put the various pieces of oneself together in a new way. Combined with Eris there is a built-in desire to eliminate the former flaws which a square to Venus would exacerbate I would think.

Perhaps this season will provide us moments of clarity on what is worthy and what is worthwhile and in so doing will bring greater understanding on why Orius is coming into focus for humanity. Much obliged Len!

  17. Thank you Len for an article that, as always, allows perspective and guidance.

Please allow me a few thoughts to share with you and my friends here. When I felt a necessary shift of focus these past several weeks, what became so obvious to me was the rut that I seemed trapped in. Many times over, it felt better to talk about old patterns or struggles as if the very intention of breaking free from them would almost perpetuate their vibration and bring more of those old experiences, thus continuing my old story and keeping myself safe in what I knew and in a struggle that I kept identifying with and re-identifying with. What I was also feeling was that, no matter what I did, I would always be associated with where I came from, who I was, and the problems I was having. Dying to those stories is a type of Death I was/am seeking. I cannot continue to live my life from the perspective of what is not working. And deeper, I cannot continue to walk into every wall when the real emphasis should be to stop and notice the beautiful fruition of my life as it is right now. There is no past, there is no pain, there aren’t things to go back and fix. Yes, I still wake up crying, remembering some past memory, but now I let that vibration dissolve into an irrelevancy that is liberating and translucent – not obstructing.

I finally looked at my sketch book of scattered musical bits that came together in my head this past year, and without any fear of ignoring my life and desires, I picked up my pencil. 17 days later, the entire short score is finished and a 15 minute piece I am most proud of is looking back at me, finally on paper.

I also realize that I could be waiting my whole life for a relationship that will either never come, or be continuously unsatisfying, or short lived. What does that say about me, about what is really important to me? Why am I here? To go on about stuff that is unsatisfactory and defeating? No. My music is my life and there’s no need to wait. I’m not sure who I’m waiting for. I am an open canvas, I’m fortunate that way. And here’s the thing about “experience” that is so dreadfully self-judgmental: In both my music and my relationships, I don’t have much experience in the real world and I worry about being ostracized on both fronts, which would effectively leave me isolated and obsolete. Again, what does that say about me as a person – as a vibrational being?

So I move forward in ways that only make me feel amazing and creative. I write music. I am Reiki. I feel deep appreciation. I trust. And I embrace Saturn on my Natal Sun next week. And yes, nudity will happen. 🙂

    Thanks so much!

ps. beautiful website Kari! (sniff, sniff – nice new car smell!) 😉

  18. Thank you, Len

To me there is no greater service than the service of being present, and in my world, presence is a service best offered from a place of integrity, of being complete (and although I’m fairly sure not everyone sees it that way, that’s okay too.) Equally, I know no power greater than the power of creating from the core of one’s own truth, nor greater pleasure than the joy of sharing that truth. While the products of our own truths can be bought and sold, surely the route by which they come to us is ours alone to know? I wonder what Borassisi will make of that!

with gratitude and appreciation on a very peaceful evening.
