In Saturn’s Dominion — Venus Enters Capricorn

Imagine all the people living for today.
— John Lennon

Venus enters Capricorn at 11:11 pm EST tonight, as many of us complete a transition from holidays back to work. It’s good timing. With ingress to cardinal earth, Venus will symbolically add its energy to the subject of work, an area of emphasis for astrology in general right now. That’s because Venus will be included among the significant number of major, sign-ruling planets under the dominion of Saturn, which, in turn, corresponds to work in your life.

Astrology by Len Wallick

Saturn, in the words of Robert Hand, “represents the way you see and experience the universe as you have structured it.” The structure of your life is probably determined largely by how you support yourself. Hence, the ringed one’s correspondence to work.

Saturn rules Capricorn, where tonight Venus will join the Sun, Mercury and Pluto (and the asteroid Juno, though Juno does not rule a sign). Saturn is also the traditional ruler of Aquarius, current residence of Mars. Additionally, on Thursday the Moon will enter Capricorn, not leaving Aquarius until Monday. Just for fun, let us go around the zodiac (beginning with Aries) and audit Saturn’s influence this week.

Aries is ruled by Mars, Taurus by Venus, Gemini by Mercury, Cancer by the Moon, Leo by the Sun, Virgo by Mercury, Libra by Venus, Scorpio by Pluto (or Mars), Sagittarius by Jupiter (currently retrograde in Gemini), Capricorn and Aquarius by Saturn (Uranus is modern co-ruler of Aquarius) and finally Pisces, where Jupiter ruled before the discovery of Neptune. In other words, the planetary lord of the rings, either directly or by proxy, really does rule them all for the near future. It makes Monsanto look like small potatoes. Fortunately, unlike Monsanto or Sauron, the true nature of Saturn is not as malicious as its reputation.

Centuries ago, astrologers divided planets up into the benefic (who brought treats) and malefic (who brought tasks). That’s where Saturn’s reputation comes from — it was classified among the task masters. Back then, astrology was not informed by the idea that responsibility for our condition is, as Shakespeare put it, “not in our stars, but in ourselves.”

That’s how Robert Hand’s interpretation of Saturn in your life comes down to how “you have structured it,” which is good news. It is good news because it means that you have control to the extent that you take responsibility for the work that you do, and its consequences in your life. That’s where Venus comes in, starting tonight.

When Venus (considered by the ancients to be a benefic) enters Capricorn, it will bring its emblematic receptivity and functional principle of attraction to Saturn’s table. That should enhance a consciousness that your work, and the structure it brings to your life goes beyond a means of support. Venus’ entry to Capricorn should correspond to a greater awareness of what all of your work does to and for you, and others as well. Awareness is big stuff, it is the source of appreciation. It begins with appreciating yourself.

Appreciating yourself begins with acknowledging your existence. You can do that by seeing work to be done and doing it. It could be as simple as picking some litter up off the street and disposing of it properly. You work, therefore you are. Once you get that connection, work is no longer a drudgery, but a privilege, even a joy.

The Venus-enhanced level of awareness, brought about by showing yourself what you can do above and beyond what you have to do, makes you want to take responsibility for more than just completing tasks to satisfy somebody else in exchange for a few pieces of fake silver. Aspiring to that sort of responsibility is what being in Saturn’s dominion is really all about. It’s beyond malefic and benefic. You find the tasks, and you bring the treats.

In the days to come, the sky is symbolically opening up. The major, sign-ruling planets are aligning meaningfully to open appreciation, awareness and the responsibility of Saturn’s dominion to all of us together, at the same time. Please don’t feel like you have to save the world all at once. Start small.

Find the one small thing nobody else is doing, do it, and feel good about it. Then, imagine everybody in the world doing something small, and appreciating themselves, all on the same day. Finally, imagine not only living in appreciation of what you are doing, but everybody living in the awareness of what everybody else was doing for today. Imagine the possibilities. We are so very close to actually making that happen. Please do your part to make the sky open up this week, just to see what will happen. You never know, your timing could be just as good as that of Venus.

  1. Len, Be has worded a perfect post to speak of you and what you gift to me/us. Thank you both. I have taken Saturn to heart in recent years in part because of heightened awareness of astrology and in part because you mentioned to do so. I can see enormous opportunity in what he offers at this time and one-step-at-a-time-up-the-stony-mountain, I am grateful for understanding that each step actually brings me closer to a tangible reality than all I have viewed from flying above the mountain prior to this.

    Happy Hiking,
    Linda

  2. Genevieve: Thank yoou for your gentle appraisal. Our thanks to you, in turn, for the extraordinary experience of your monthly Moonshine Horoscopes.

Lizzy: Thank you for your wisdom. True wisdom it is, that a serene heart be the purpose, reward, and distinguishing characteristic of the truly gracious among us.

DivaCarla: Thank you for your gracious comments. The time for Venus’ ingress (11:11) was not exact, but rounded to the nearest minute. It would be cool were it exact, but, as the saying goes, it was “close enough for government work” to be worthy of mention.

  3. Len, thanks so much for this posting. What about that 11:11 est magic number? That’s enough to sit up and take notice. It inspired me to create a little private ritual to connect with Venus as she made her move, and of course, Mars and Saturn both came along for the ride. I learned a lot about all them in the process. I am enjoying this menage a trois for the next few days.

  4. Yes, thank you for this beautiful piece, dear Len. And thank you Be, for your lovely comment and appreciation of Len, which I agree with wholeheartedly. My natal Saturn is in Capricorn, opposite my sun, so I’ve developed some hard hooves on rocky mountains over the years. Something else that is emerging for me these days is the necessity to do all one can to cultivate a serene heart, that a lot of suffering and anxiety comes from the tormented heart.

  5. Chief Niwots Son: You are very welcome.

jinspace: It is a joy to have resonated with your experience.

Lunesoleil: Thank you for bringing your poetic observations to Planet Waves once again.

be: Tahnk you so very much once again. You count for a lot, and your experience with Saturn is a valuable contribution. You are probably too generous in your praise for me, but it is accepted gratefully nonetheless.

christy lee-engel: You are most welcome. Thank you for your kind words.

karena: Thank you for sharing your outstanding efforts. You are an excellent example for us all.

  6. I second be’s emotion….thank you for your joyous service.
I started a large project of cleaning a huge, old, oak-timbered barn today and it was nice, after a day of rather exhausting( but fun) toil, to read your inspiring words. It is so great to see incremental progress as I bring beauty and sustainability back to a neglected farmstead. I’m taking each project as I can fit it in and this week is given over to a barn that has weathered 130+ years. It’s a labor of love. Thanks again for your labor of love Len.

  7. be, thank you for this perfect description: “You are the astrology poet who sees beauty in small but perfect synchronicities that make us stop and look and listen when otherwise we would have stampeded over them.” and thank you Len, for the beauty and the encouragement thus described.

  8. Venus may still be in Sagittarius as I finally get to reading your offering Len, but she’s trine my own Saturn and doesn’t that count? Most of us, unless born under the sign of Cappy or maybe those who have their Moon or south node in that sign, can’t begin to understand the value of Saturn until we get much older. But then, that’s the way he operates, his little goat feet climbing slowly up the mountain, very carefully, one step at a time. He bestows those rewards after much time and effort has been put into one’s work. There is quality in that kind of work and that kind of reward. It is less difficult to appreciate one’s own recognition when it has been earned the old fashion way. It makes it easier to recognize when others have done likewise. It’s pretty serious business Len, this working hard to do one thing well and then recognizing others who have done the same. That’s why we recognize you as the best at what you do. You see astrology in a unique way; you fill an important niche we might not have even realized that we needed filling. You are the astrology poet who sees beauty in small but perfect synchronicities that make us stop and look and listen when otherwise we would have stampeded over them. Well, that’s Venus in Capricorn for you (or Venus trine Saturn even)! Thank you for being here.

  9. I see the contact of Venus and Saturn as the need to strengthen the link or to break the links? Venus square Uranus, a carrefour complex thing
Be on your guard keen period of high-flying question feelings… Venus in the House 9 abroad… to default virtual sacred separation 1000 km embellishes the links but also gives printing sometimes live on another planet… go hop in bed it late in France past 1 o’clock in the morning and Yes on internet time is a no borders… should not sleep… someday perhaps, the dream will be omnipresent need to sleep 😉

Thank you Len for good inspiration night at all
Tomorrow on my blog a recipe, you will enjoy and meatless 🙂

  10. Bullseye, indeed. This is so perfect and wise, Len.

Thank you for continuing to explain and identify the gentler side of Saturn. Your writing today describes *exactly* where I am at. Saturn’s in my first house right now, and it already feels like the return of a long lost friend whom I appreciate more now than I did the first time around.

  11. “Awareness is big stuff, it is the source of appreciation. It begins with appreciating yourself.”

    Bullseye, thank you Len.
